2、eon. He graduated from Oxford. He started by writing poetry and stories and essays, and then achieved fame with his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and his comedies. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. As the result of a widely covered s

3、eries of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years after being convicted of gross indecency with other men. After Wilde was released from prison he set sail for Dieppe by the night ferry. He never returned to Ireland or Britain. Before his departure from England, he

4、 had been divorced and declared a bankrupt, and in France he had to rely on friends for financial support. 8、 Alan Campbell: a chemist,3.2 The plot,In the novel the hero Dorian Gray was at first a handsome and innocent youth, and the painter Howard Basil drew a picture of him. Then Dorian met Lord Henry Wotton, an extremely immoral and degenerate hedonist, and fell under the latters vicious influence, and

9、became a hedonist and indulged in all sorts of depravity, until he even killed Howard who tried to give him advice. Dorian continued to look as innocent and as handsome as before, but his picture painted by Howard looked terrible. Then one night he stabbed at the picture with a knife but the result

10、was that he had stabbed himself and now he looked terrible but the picture appeared as handsome and innocent as before.,3.3 The theme,The Picture of Dorian Gray is the classic tale of vanity written by Oscar Wilde. The book highlights the tension between the polished surface of high life and the lif

11、e of secret vice. Although sin is punished in the end, the book has a strong flavour of the work of decadence, illustrating Wildes view of art for arts sake. Wilde asserts in his preface to the expanded edition: There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written or badly wr
