Through his experimental and emotionally probing dramas, he addressed the difficulties of human society with a deep psychological co

3、mplexity. ONeills disdain for the commercial realities of the theater world he was born into led him to produce works of importance and integrity. Of his very few comedies, only one is well-known (Ah, Wilderness!). Nearly all of his other plays involve some degree of tragedy and personal pessimism,L

4、ong Days Journey into Night is widely considered to be his masterwork and a semi-autobiography base on ONeill own family life.The play was written in 1941 but published in 1956 three years after he died.ONeill received the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for the work in1957. Long Days Journey into Night was

5、 never performed during ONeill lifetime. On his twelfth wedding anniversary with his wife Carlotta, ONeill gave her the script of the play.,Theme:,The action of the work covers a single day from around 8:30 am to midnight, setting in a living room of a summerhouse in August 1912. In the play, the ch

6、aracters blame, resent and accuse each other in their daily life lead the conflict escalate. Alienation, isolation, loneliness, loss of faith, and illusion, all of those appeared in the play. The escape motif is also predominant. James, Jamie and Edmund all try to avoid the reality by getting drunk,

7、 Mary by having morphine and living in her illusory world. 11、up with excuses to escape the fact. She loves to live in the fog and be away from the sufferings of life. She feels safe in the fog. 12、ene 1 Mary tries to excuse her son Jamie for his faults, but her comment reveals her attitude to herself as well. “I hate doctors! Theyll do anything-anything to keep you coming back to them. Theyll sell their souls! Whats worse, theyll sell yours, and you never know it till one day you find yoursel

13、f in hell!” Act 2, scene 2 Mary gives vent to her anger. “the past is the present, isnt it? Its the future, too.” Act 2, scene2 Mary express her depressed vision of how people are slaves to what happened in the past.,Jamie Tyrone,Jamie Tyrone, the elder son, he is in his early thirties. Hes cynical,

14、 bitter, arrogant, and often mean. Because he squanders money on drink and women, he has to relay on his parents support. He dropped out of several colleges and has very little ambition, letting his parents down very much. And he is suspected to be the murder of another younger brother because of en

Enter Ophelia” Act 4 Jamies sardonic remark when his mother enter the room, apparently unaware of her surroundings. “ happy roads is bunk.

Though Edmund is very different from the rest of his family, he does have one similarity-hes an expert escape artist. He doesnt turn into a mean drunk like his brother, but he still use
