1、.2009 AMCAS PERSONAL STATEMENTCharacters: 5233, Limit: 5300I stood in the corridor stunned and struggled to grasp the drastic turn of events. Despite thepatient sstabilized condition an hour before, he shook violently on the treatment bed, unconsciously and compulsively jerked with a vertical motion
2、. My first encounter with death was unexpected and shocking as he passed away in front of my eyes. After returning home that evening, I still felt the blues and was puzzled at his death with the vividly horrifying scene in my mind. In the following weeks, I experienced other painful scenes that swep
3、t away my previous belief in the perfection of medicine. Participation as an ER volunteer at Marian Medical Center gave me the first realistic view of medicine.Rather than scaring me away, these events inspired me to actively participate in the Medical Mentoring Program. From family practice to card
4、iology, ophthalmology to neurology, orthopedics to otolaryngology, I gained multi-faceted perspectives of medicine from shadowing physicians of different specialty through observing not only doctor-patient contact in the office, but also various operations such as neurosurgery, angioplasty, and lase
5、r photocoagulation. I also conversed with patients and listened to their concerns. Although I could not help them medically, I felt gratified to have eased their fears. The shadowing experience was extremely rewarding andit inspired me to be a doctor.Physicians ability to heal bodies, save lives, an
6、d offer comfort during times of agony is remarkable and requires profound knowledge of science and technology.At UC Berkeley, the more I learn about the biological sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the more I marvel at and yearn to understand the complex intricacies and the unimaginable fun
7、ctionality of synchronizing trillions of cells in the human body. As the most creative form onearth, our body is composed of“stardust”and yet possesses ingenious mechanisms to perform .and adapt. What else could be more practical and common, and yet so creative in our lives than the body? The opport
8、unity to pursue advanced knowledge of the body and to serve the people using it draws me toward medicine. My inquisitive personality, however, was not satisfied with only learning, it also wanted to discover.To discover mechanisms of the body, I researched aspects of B cell development, such as stud
9、ying the nature of coding joints during V(D)J recombination, under Dr. Mark Schlissel. During my endeavors, I was challenged daily to apply my knowledge to plan sound experiments, design effective procedures, and critically analyze and solve problems. My intellectual development in the cooperative a
10、tmosphere of scientific discovery will no doubt help me in future endeavors to make and understand breakthroughs. Furthermore, I believe that research goes hand-in-hand with treatment: they allow me to approach clinical treatment with critical thinking and to approach research with humanistic intent
11、. Because of the value of research to medicine, I hope to continue researching in medical school and in the future.Beside my interest in medicine, I actively explored other careers and developed well-rounded qualities that will be beneficial as a physician. In high school, I organized the Mock Trial
12、 club and explored the legal profession as an attorney. The teaching profession to educate future generations interested me and I took on more tutoring and teaching responsibilities. To fulfill my interest in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry and their relationship to medicine, I took a
13、seminar and spoke with industry professionals. The career choices I explored were fascinating, but I still came back to medicine because not only is it a field that combines and closely interacts with those sectors of society, but also it is the only profession that can fulfill my diverse interests.
14、 Additionally, in medicine, I can fully utilize my abilities to serve others using my leadership.I believe physicians are leaders not only in the medical field but also in society, especially in modern times. Like physicians, I have made positive impacts on my community by using my leadership to ser
15、ve others through activities such as guiding the Californians as President, establishing the Cal Leadership Advisory Board, and working for social justice by implementing the Hands-on-Science program. The numerous prestigious leadership awards I have received, such as the Outstanding Student Leader
16、Award and Winged Helmet Award, are testaments to the power of individuals to make significant differences. As a physician, I will continue to carry on this belief and task in medicine, the field that matches my interest and abilities.I fully understand that to become a doctor requires commitment, time, and sacrifice. Nonetheless, with my experiences and explorations, I know medicine is for me. I look forward to the journey of life long learning, overcoming difficulties, and serving others. As a physician, I will use my abilities
