文档简介

Characterization (Teachers Copy)Protagonist: The person/thing that drives the novel. The central figure. Not necessarily heroic.Antagonist: Represents obstacles that the protagonist must face. The Departed.Flat: Embody or represent a single characteristic, trait, or idea. They are not developed. A number of stereotypical, or stock characters, have developed throughout the history of drama. “The Giving Tree” the tree is always giving. It is defined by this characteristic. Why would the author not fully develop a character? What purpose does this serve? (Teach a lesson, be a foil). Wouldnt have the same effect if it was the sometimes-giving tree. Gollum from the Lord of the Rings his “precious”Round: Complex, multi-dimensional, and developed, embodying a number of qualities and traits. Usually the main character in the books you have read. Think of an example. Dynamic: The character changes. Physical change must also reflect change in self (insight, understanding, or values) Changes considered to qualify a character as dynamic include changes in insight or understanding, changes in commitment, and changes in values. Changes in circumstance, even physical circumstance, do not apply unless they result in some change within the characters selfStatic: The character does not change. Supporting characters. Sidekicks. Why not make a character change? To help the non-static character stand out and illuminate how they have changed. Read Shirley Jacksons “The Lottery”Extra Credit: Read this story and write a page typed, two paragraph response.Paragraph 1: Who is static in this story? Who is round/dynamic? How so? What effect does this have on the story? Paragraph 2: How would themes in this short story relate to themes in Kindred? Can a character be round and static? Yes. See chart below. Abu in Aladdin.CharacterDynamicStaticRoundConsidered the best type of character development. Usually the protagonist and often the antagonist as well.Dr. Jekyll and Hyde, AladdinDevelopment is considered well-done. Often found in protagonists in books for younger children or in a supporting/side-kick role. Abu, Robin, James BondFlatCharacters cannot be dynamic and flat, because in a flat character we do not know enough about them for them to recognize a change. If a flat character seems to change, it is usually due to poor writing.N/AIn very simple books, or in fairy tales, the protagonist may be flat and static. Also appropriate for minor characters in other books.Giving Tree, LOTR Gollum, JafarPut Vocab on overhead. Due on Friday. As they copy it down, pass back assignments. Reading quiz on Monday. If these grades do not go up on Monday, they will have a reading quiz every day that week. Burning Questions: Collect Post-It notes.Direct Instruction: Go over characterization terminology. Watch video clip of Aladdin. Ask them to fill in the boxes on the worksheet with the following characters: Aladdin, Jafar, and Abu. One for each box. The Dynamic/Flat box is N/A. Explain that you will not see a flat, dynamic character. After they watch the clip ask them: Raise your hand if you think Aladdin is the dynamic/round character. Raise your hand if you think Abu is. Raise your hand if you think it is Jafar. Why is Aladdin round? Why is he dynamic? Give specific examples. Now, ask them to write down one word on the piece of paper to describe Jafar. Note that everyone has put down “evil” this is Jafars defining characteristic. Why doesnt Jafar change? Why does he have a single, defining trait? Many words could be used to describe Abu, however (greedy, loyal, a thief, loving). Write this down: One of the reasons an author creates static, round characters is to make the main character stand out. He/she kind of works with the main character to bring about/show change. How is this accomplished in this video clip? How does Abu make Aladdins characteristics stand out? Aladdin or Genie: Round and dynamicAbu: Round and staticJafar: Static and flatIntroduce extra-credit and explain that it is posted online. Due Friday. Guided Practice/Debate: Is Rufus an antagonist or a protagonist? Divide the class in half and use the football. Each person should get the football.Characterization (Students Copy)Protagonist:Antagonist:Flat:Round:Dynamic:Static:CharacterDynamicStaticRoundConsidered the best type of character development.
