It is only later when he has aged and been through many battles that he learns an important lesson: there is no “I ” in “team”. There is no better example of the value of teamwork than the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were all superstars on three different teams. Yet, none of them had any titles to show for it. Then, last season, they decided to sacrifice money and individual statistics to play together. Garnett and Allen joined Pierce on the Celtics and changed the NBA in the process. It started in simple ways. Garnett and Allen are two of the most intense athletes in the world. They treat every second of every practice like it is the NBA championship. If you want to play alongside them then you will have to do the same. So, the young guys on the Celtics started giving their full effort too. Pierce had been the star of the Celtics for many years. He used to shoot the ball many times a game. But with the addition of Allen and Garnett he shot less and focused on defense. His selflessness showed the young players that doing what made the team better was the only thing that mattered. When the Celtics were winning and the game was almost over, Garnett, Pierce and Allen would come out of the game. But they wouldnt just sit on the bench. Instead, they stood and cheered and screamed for their teammates. They wanted to support their friends and teammates. Now, the guys who dont play know they can still affect the game by cheering so they scream and cheer when Garnett, Allen and Pierce are playing. The Celtics have developed a strong relationship. They are more than just teammates. They are brothers. The result: the Boston Celtics won the championship and are considered the favorites to win the Eastern Conference championship again this year. There is a saying that goes, A successful team beats with one heart. If that is the case, the Celtics may have the biggest heart in the NBA. 21. What does the passage mainly talk about? Have you been doing internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What cant you be bothered to do? A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so idle theyd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs. Just over 2000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britains largest health charity. The results were startling. About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up. More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them. This led the report to conclude that its no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese before they start school. Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said: People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too. If we dont start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks. And Scotlands largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most indolent city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%. The results pose serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year. 24. I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to great parties, joined the debating society. and, well, I did some work too - but I must confess my lecturers were very patient with my tardiness. Its easy to look back at our university days through rose-tinted spectacles but the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, most of us were out of our comfort zone. In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has revealed that 3 out of 4 students experience high levels of stress, or a mental health condition, during their time at college. The survey, completed by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experience stress do so at least once a week, and 9% of students feel stressed constantly. Kristy, a student at Exeter University, didnt enjoy her first days in college. She says: When I first got to university I dont think Id realized that Id forgotten how to make friends. Id been with the same school friends for seven years, and so I was trying to balance social success with academic success whilst learning how to look after myself at quite a young age. Dr Ruth Caleb of the counseling service at Brunel University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: Certain things that I think it would be very helpful for students to have put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on being able to cook. Budgeting is extremely important in university life. And Caleb adds: You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably. I graduated and learnt how to take care of myself the hard way. I hope that new students these days remember to acquire some life skills before they make the big jump. 27. What did the author do that made her professors angry? A. She didnt do well in her studies.
