Module 5 The Conquest of the Universe A Trip Along the Three Gorges (建议用时40分钟). 阅读理解AIf you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all. Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1, 000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries. Over time, this can cause serious injuries. Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful. ”The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than“iron man”events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You dont actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldnt actually do too much. ”【文章大意】最新的一项科学研究显示: 从事剧烈运动的人与根本不锻炼的人死亡几率是一样的, 而适度的锻炼会有益于健康。1. The underlined word“strenuous”in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to“_”. He starts the class by connecting his laptop to a projector, and then he avoids the traditional path, away from rote memorizationand toward rap music. A short song clip plays over speakers: “So rude that your mentality is changing your reality. ”Martin explains the word“distort”. The program is called Rhymes with Reason. Hes using rap lyrics to teach vocabulary, in the hope that some will connect more to popular music than they do to words on a page. But Martin says making his lessons easy on a website for kids to use anywhereat home, on their phonesets his program apart. “Hip hop, ”Martin says, “is full of words students might need to know for the exams. ”Hes amassed more than 450 examples so far. “I just got out of high school. My sister is in high school, ”says Martin. “Im in tune with that climate. ”Most of the kids seem to understand that“distort”means to change. And then, like many English teachers, he asks the class to use the word in context. But not in a sentence. He wants them to write it in their own rap lyrics. Heres what student Tiffanie Pichardo comes up with: “Youre always distorting my brain, making me insane, the way you cross your arms and give me attitude, why dont you go somewhere and dont be rude. ”Although hes in an Ivy League college now, Martin says that he struggled in school. He was smart, but he says the things he was really intellectually curious about werent valued in the classroom. “I knew every last thing there was to know about hip-hop and basketball, ”he says. He could tell you incredibly detailed facts about rappers and NBA players. So why not tap into that enthusiasm to help kids like him, who might be turned off by traditional schoolwork? Hes hoping Rhymes with Reason will do the trick. Martin says Rhymes with Reason is still in the testing phase. Its used in only a handful of classes, and he doesnt yet have reliable data to show that it actually improves test scores or vocabulary. 【文章大意】本文主要介绍了Austin Martin利用说唱音乐教给孩子们单词, 让他们能够迅速掌握词汇的情况。5.
