课下能力提升(二十).阅读理解American culture is unique because it is formed and developed under certain conditions. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity (多民族) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more, these elements are still influencing the American culture. The early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of America. From 1607 to 1892, frontiers were pushed further west. The frontiersmen (拓荒者) looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism (个人主义), selfreliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage (遗产) of America. In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to America three times. They brought their own culture to America and later on, different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture is formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values. The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the fight of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism (多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States.Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middleaged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. The people in America have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime.1We can learn from this article that _.Athe frontiersmen left important society values for American cultureBthe early immigrants brought about the unique American cultureCpeople in the world once rushed to America because of its unique cultureDthe American family members dont get along well with each other解析:选A细节理解题。根据第二段的内容可知,美国早期的拓荒者对美国文化有深刻的影响。2From the passage we know _.Athere are many kinds of American religionsBAmerican religions are different from those in other placesCAmerican values are the same as Chinese onesDeveryone should have American values解析:选A细节理解题。根据第三段的“The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism (多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States.”可知。3The last paragraph is about _.Athe family structure in American societyBthe influence of the three elements in the current American societyCthe new life style of American familyDthe reason why American people like to change residences解析:选B段落大意题。这一段主要告诉我们三个因素对现在的美国文化的影响。4What might be the most suitable title of this article?AThe Immigrants in AmericaBWhy American Culture Is UniqueCThe Influence of American CultureDPlural Religion and American Culture解析:选B标题归纳题。美国的文化非常独特,主要有三个方面使其独特,本文主要阐述了这几个方面对美国文化的影响,说明了美国独特文化产生的原因。.阅读七选五The Lost Rules of EtiquetteEtiquette, or good manners, used to be the glue that held society together._1_ Sadly, these days it has mostly gone by the wayside. This list is several best rules of etiquette that have now disappeared.Opening the Door.In days gone by, a gentleman would always open doors for ladies._2_ This has now almost entirely disappeared and it is not entirely the fault of the men.I have seen women laugh at men for opening a door for them.It seems to be confusing manners with chauvinism (大男子主义)Writing ThankYou Notes. In days gone by, whenever a person received a gift, he would write a thankyou note as soon as possible._3_ Parents would sit children down after a birthday or Christmas and coach them in their first thankyou note.It is a shame that gift giving has now become a virtual obligation and the idea of a thankyou note would be laughed at._4_We seem to have completely lost the concept of correct timing when it comes to parties these days._5_ After all, a party normally has a guest of honor this is usually the oldest woman present. It was considered extremely rude in the past to leave a party before the guest of honor and once the guest of honor left, it was a signal to all that they should begin their own preparations to leave.AArriving on Time.BLeaving at the Right Time.CPeople leave with various excuses.DIt enabled people to get on well with each other.EThis rule was true even if the giver was a relative.FIt could be the lady he was driving, or a stranger.GWeve thrown away the concept of a guest of honor at will.答案:15DFEBC.完形填空As we welcome the beginning of a new year, I am recalling about an entire decade that Ive spent as a mother to my son.My adult life began in 1991, when the birth of my son forced me to grow up _1_.
