Noticing this structure and other signals, one can better understand the lecture and more easily choose the most appropriate style of notes for the lecture. By selectively recording key points, one can clearly organize the main idea, as well as all the facts, examples, and supporting information used to develop that idea.,Unit 6 Part II,Popular note-taking formats include: two-column table spidergram ( mind-mapping) diagram/mind-mapping two-column table table timeline flow chart outlining (headings and notes),Unit 6 Part II,advantages and disadvantages cause and effect classification and definition comparison and contrast facts and figures sequence of events stages of a process question and answer,The following is an illustration of the column-style format. It helps organize information into two different columns. First, draw a vertical line. The left column should be drawn 1/3 the distance from the left side of the page, and the right column should be 2/3 from the right side of the page. Next, label the left column “Main Ideas”, and the right column “Notes”. In this way, the main content is arranged orderly and clearly.,Unit 6 Part II,For example:,Unit 6 Part II,Another popular format is the diagram format. First, draw a circle in the center of the page. Inside that circle, write the topic of the lecture (e.g. Are earthquakes really on the increase?). Next, draw a line branching out from the center circle. Then write the first section, or main idea, of the lecture (for example, reasons for the increase). Draw more circles branching out from that line containing important details which describe that main idea. A more formal version of this format is the flowchart(流程图).,Unit 6 Part II,Unit 6 Part II,The outline format is another popular choice. To organize notes in this way, first, list the major concepts as the top-level points (I, II, III). Then list the main ideas (A, B, C) as subordinate points. After that, place the aspects of the main idea in the order of 1., 2., 3. In this format, use indention(缩进)and listing to ensure that these marks are clearly subordinate(附属)ideas. Traditionally, with each additional level, one alternates between numbers and letters (with the former, also between Roman numerals and Arabic numbers), and descends from capital letters to lowercase letters.,Unit 6 Part II,For example: I Earthquakes on the rise? A. Reasons for the increase 1. a. i. ii. iii. b. 2. a. 3. a. i.,Unit 6 Part II,B. 1. 2. 3. II. A. B. The best way to take good notes depends partially on the specific learning style of each student. Linear(线性的)learners will likely take column-style notes, while visual learners may prefer the diagram method. The latter is also effective for students who have a difficult time staying focused in class. Students should experiment to find the format that works best for them.,Unit 6 Part II,Word Bank,Unit 6 Part II Word Bank,Task Listen to the following short passage and write down its main idea and reasons for the increase in earthquakes. Use the column-style format with shorthand symbols and abbreviations.,Task,Unit 6 Part II Task,# of eq. located is # of seis. stations and impt. of global com. (=in 1931, there were 350 stations, today, there are more than 8,000 stations.) Data comes in rapidly can locate eq. rapidly (=Data comes in rapidly, which allow us to locate earthquakes rapidly.),_,3. b/c imp. in com., and interest in env. and nat. dis, learn more. (=because of improvements in communications and increasing interest in the environment and natural disasters, people are learning more about earthquakes.),_,Script,Unit 6 Part II Script,Part III Extensive Listening,I News Reports,II Interview,III News Story,IV Conversations,V Passage Listening,VI Compound Dictation,Word Bank,Unit 6 Part III I News Reports I,Listen to the report and then do the following exercise.,1.
