Discuss the following questions: a) Which do you think are the five most important interview tips? Why? b) Which of the tips do you disagree with? Why? c) Can you add more tips as advice for job interview? d) When looking for a job, what factors do you consider important? Please list a number of factors in order of importance, and compare it with your partners. Try to state your reasons. e) When applying for a job, what preparations do you think you should make? f) Discuss in pairs or groups what kind of company you would like to work in and give reasons.,When a company needs to recruit or employ new people, it may decide to advertise the job or position in the appointments section of a newspaper. People who are interested can then apply for the job by sending in a letter of application or covering letter (US cover letter) and a curriculum vitae or CV ( US rsum) containing details of their education and experience. A company may also ask candidates to complete a standard application form. The companys Human Resource Department will then select the most suitable applications and prepare a short list of candidates or applicants, who are invited to attend an interview.,3. Key vocabulary,Can you complete the passage with right words or phrases?,Information you should know about the company prior to your interview: Organizational structure Divisions/departments that interest you Products/Services Training Programs Size of company How long have they been in business Types of clients Growth in the past and future potential Job description & job title New products and services they are developing Employee benefits Geographic location,INTERVIEW PREPARATION, Memorize the name of the person who will interview you .Nothing could be more embarrassing than forgetting their name or calling them by the wrong name! Decide what you will wear. Get a good nights sleep. Arrive 15 minutes early. This not only shows that you are prompt it also gives you a chance to gain your composure. Be friendly to the receptionist/secretarythey often are asked their opinion!,DURING THE INTERVIEW, Start it off like a winner. Be comfortable. Listen attentively. Avoid nervous mannerisms. Speak clearly. Be positive and enthusiastic. Ask pertinent questions. When it is over, stand up, thank the interviewer for their time and shake hands firmly. Be sure to find out the next step.,AFTER THE INTERVIEW, The next day write the interviewer a brief note reiterating your interest in the job. Follow up. If you havent heard from the interviewer within the time frame indicated at the close of the interview, call them to relay a polite reminder that youre still interested in the job. Ask when they plan to make a hiring decision. If you arent hired. If you continue to be interested in the company, it pays to keep in touch with the interviewer. Often, through persistence, you may be offered a position at a later date. Chin Up. Gear up for your next interview. After all the more interviews you tackle the more polished you become. You may want to contact the interviewer who rejected you and see if you can get any pointers on what to improve before your next interview.,THE INTERVIEWERS HIDDEN AGENDA,The following are some typical concerns interviewers have, which you need to address when answering questions. Be sensitive to these concerns, answering all questions in the most positive way to build psychological leverage and position yourself for the offer. Does the applicant have the ability to do the job? Can he or she manage people? How does he or she relate to people? What kind of a person is this? A leader? What strengths does he or she have that we need? Why has there been a number of job changes? In what areas is he or she weak? How will this affect performance? What contribution has the applicant made? What are his or her ambitions? Are they realistic? Does she or he have growth potential? How will other interviewers react? Should this person get an offer?,INTERVIEW DRESSING,DOS Dress conservatively. Check out what management wears and dress similarly without overkill. Practice good grooming. Do have clean, neatly styled hair. Do have clean hands and trimmed nails. Do bring a clean notepad and pen that works. Do wear shoes you can walk easily in.,INTERVIEW DRESSING,Donts Dont wear torn, soiled, wrinkled clothing. Dont dress casual. Dont wear a lot of jewelry (Men should avoid earrings). Dont wear athletic shoes. Dont eat spicy, offensive smelling foods prior to the interview. Dont wear sexy clothing. Dont wear “cutesy“ ties (i.e. a flashing Mickey Mouse tie). Dont chew gum or smoke. Dont wear a mini-skirt. Dont wear heavy make-up.,Listening Task,In this part you will listen to a passage and a dialogue about job interviews. Try to finish the exercises while listening. Are you ready?,1) Why is it suggested that one should concentrate on well-known companies when looking for a job? Because well-known companies are usually large and, therefore, frequently hire new people. 2) What are the three ways to contact the companies you are applying for? The first way is to call them up on the telephone. Another way is to write a cover letter and send it to the company with a resume. The third way is to go directly to the company without first writing or calling. 3) Why do you use these ways to contact the companies? To get an interview. 4) Why is the job interview crucial for getting a good job? Managers are trained to interview applicants in a special way. The education and experience of the interviewee are important; yet, equally important to a company is how a person feels about the company. 5) What is the company concerned with in a job interview? The psychology of the applicants., 1.1.1 Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.,6) What are the three stages of the typical interview? The first is the beginning of the interview, during which the manager tries to make the applicant feel comfortable and tells the applicant something about the company. In the second stage, the manager asks the interviewee questions about his education, his background, and his interest in the job. Finally, the manager will discuss salary and allow the applicant to ask questions about the company. 7) What should a person do in an interview? Try to relax, to be honest, and to be yourself. If you relax and act naturally, the interviewer will feel comfortable and will know that he can trust you. This will increase your chances of getting the job., 1.1.2 Listen to the dialogue and fill in the form below according to the information you hear.,Speaking Task,In this part you are going to read two dialogues in pairs and then you will be asked to answer some questions about what you have read. Please read louder!,1.2.1 Dialogue Mr Tony Johnson, the manager of the export department, is interviewing Ms Linda White who is applying for the post of secretary. 1)What does Ms White do at the moment? She is a secretary. 2)Why does she want to change the present company? She wants to get more interesting work thats why she is applying for this post. 3)What did Ms White say about the qualities a secretary should have? A secretary needs to be pretty hard-working and should be able to do a lot of things on her own initiative. 4)What did the report sent by Personnel Department say about Ms White? She did reasonably well in the shorthand and typing test, and very well indeed in the intelligence test. 5)What do you think of Ms Whites replies at the interview? (open) 6)Do you think Ms White will get the job? Give your reasons. (open),1.1.2 Dialogue,Miss Jones comes to see Mr Smith, the personnel manager, for the job interview. 1)What is the applicants educational background? She left school at 18. After working in an engineering firm for two years, she did a one-year full-time PA course. 2)What does she do at present? She is now working in Europe Marketing, assisting the sales director by arranging visits, setting up meetings and presentations and dealing with correspondence. 3)How did the applicant describe her foreign language ability? She was quite fluent in French and German but her foreign languages have got a bit rusty now. 4) Why does the applicant want to leave the present company and join Anglo-European? She feels that she would have more scope and opportunity in the new company and that the work will be more challenging for her. 5)Why does the applicant want to work abroad in one of the overseas branches? She likes to travel and use her foreign languages. 6)Do you think the applicant is a right person for this company? Why or why not? (open),Reading Task,1. Why do you need to do some research before an interview? Researching a company and the position makes you stand out in an interview. It shows that you are really interested in working there. 2. What sort of information do you need about the company you apply for? You may need information such as kinds of products or services the company make or sell, the types of people who work there, the typical hours this position requires and some of the day-to-day tasks that the job involves. 3. What is the proper way of dressing for a job interview? How you should dress in a job interview depends on the type of job you apply for. For example, for a job in an office, it is usually best to wear a dark-colored, conservative suit (for both men and women).,Answer the following questions:,4. According to the passage, what is meant by good interview etiquette? Can you add more? Good interview etiquette means some important tips like “Be on time for your interview”, “Be aware of your body language” and “Keep the interview positive”. 5. Why is it necessary for a job candidate to prepare some questions? Because preparing some questions about the business, the position, the requirements, the expectations of the person who will fill the position and so on shows you are truly interested in the position and also helps employers know that you have all the information you need to make a decision, if offered the job. 6. What should you do after the interview? You should send the interviewer a thank-you note, thanking him or her for taking time to interview you. This is not only proper etiquette and a common display of appreciation, but it also allows you to reaffirm one or two key points of the interview. It also lets the interviewer know how interested you are in working for the company.,In this part you are going to learn how to write employment-related letters curriculum vitae and letter of application,Writing Task,WHAT TO INCLUDE IN CV,There are several standard CV formats. The most popular format usually contains the following components: Basic Personal Information Job Objective Education Work Experience Social Practice/Extracurricular Activities (necessary for graduates without work experience only) Activities/Honors/Special Skills Hobbies and Interests (optional) References,GUIDELINES FOR WRITING YOUR CV OR RESUME, One to two pages. Use an easy to read font, 10-12-font size. Use a font such as Times New Roman or Courier Have a lot of white space on your resume, make it easy to read. Use some graphics that are easy to read, such as bold, capital letters, underline, italics, or boxes, etc. Your resume should have visual impact! List accomplishments and skills. Lead with your strongest statement of your skills and qualifications . Use a heavy bond, quality paper. Correct all typographical, grammatical and spelling errors. Be neat, organized and professional. Use a laser printer .,Effective application letters explain the reasons for your interest in the specific organization and identify your most relevant skills or experiences. They should express a high level of interest and knowledge about the position. They normally contain four parts in which you should: confirm that you wish to apply and say where you learned about the job; say why you are interested in the position and relate your interests to those of the company; show that you can contribute to the job by highlighting your most relevant skills and experience; indicate your wiliness to attend an interview.,Application Letter,Keys to a Successful CV,There are many important aspects to a CV or resume. Everyone has a different way of putting one together and, in most cases, there is no “right“ or “wrong“ way. However, there are some common characteristics that appear to be most successful in getting people job interviews and jobs.
