On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady. She is small and slight. She holds a paper carrier bag in her hands.I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. Her daughter, Nicole, bought the house next door last October.Nicole, who is currently in Shanghai, has apparently told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals.I know what is inside the paper carrier baga stainless steel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp. This has become an almostdaily occurrence.Communication between my benefactor(恩人) and me is somewhat handicapped by the fact that she doesnt speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is “ hello”. Once, she brought an iPad and pointed to the screen, which displayed a message from Nicole telling me that her mother wanted to know if the food was all right.“Your mother just cant be bringing me meals like this all the time,” I protested. “ I can hardly reciprocate by cooking something from my native land, like roast beef or Yorkshire pudding for her, ”I said.“Oh, no,” Nicole said. “Dont worry about that. She has to cook for the family anyway, and she wants to do it for you. You can call her Wing, which is her surname. ” The tenant in my basement suite is a university student who speaks Mandarin quite well, so with her help, I have found out that Wing is 6813 years younger than I am. For my part, I was raised in wartime Britain. So here we are, two grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the others language. But the doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me by Wing. Right now I am working on some more Mandarin wordsits the least I can do after such a display of kindness.“Thank you” is, of course, the first one, which somehow seems inadequate.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 1. The arrival of the “Internet of Things” will see computers baked into everything from road signs and MRI scanners to artificial body parts and insulin(胰岛素) pumps. There is little evidence that such equipment will be any more trustworthy than desktop computers. Hackers have already proved that they can take remote control of connected cars and pacemakers. However, it is tempting to believe that the security problem can be solved with yet more technical wizardry(杰出成就) and a call for further watchfulness. And it is certainly true that many firms still fail to take security seriously enough. That requires a kind of lasting insistence which does not come naturally to nontech firms. Actually, there is no way to make computers completely safe. Software is hugely complex. Across its products, Google must manage around 2 billion lines of source codeerrors are unavoidable. The average program has 14 separate bugs, each of them a potential point of illegal entry. Such weaknesses are worsened by the history of the Internet, in which security was an afterthought. This is not necessarily in despair. The risk from cheats, car accidents and the weather can never be avoided completely either. But societies have developed ways of managing suck riskfrom government regulation to the use of legal liability(责任) and insurance to create more safer behaviours.Start with regulation. Governments first priority is to stop making the situation worse. Terrorist attacks often bring calls for codes to be weakened so that the security services can better monitor what individuals are up to. But it is impossible to weaken codes for terrorists alone. The same protection that guards messaging programs like WhatsApp also guards bank business and online identities. Computer security is best served by encoding that is strong for everyone. The next priority is setting basic product regulations. A lack of professional knowledge will always block the ability of computer users to protect themselves, so governments should promote “public health” for computing. They could insist that Internetconnected contents be updated with fixes when faults are found. They could force users to change default(默认状态) usernames and passwords. Reporting laws, already in force in some American states, can require companies to report when they or their products are hacked, which encourages them to fix a problem instead of burying it.Most importantly, the software industry has for decades disclaimed liability for the harm when its products go wrong. Such an approach has its benefits. Silicon Valleys fruitful “go fast and break things” style of innovation is possible only if firms relatively have freedom to put out new products while they still need perfecting. But this point will soon be illegal. As computers spread to products covered by established liability arrangements, such as cars or domestic goods, the industrys disclaimers will increasingly be against existing laws.Firms should recognize that, if the courts do not force the liability issue, public opinion will. Fortunately, the small but growing market in cybersecurity insurance offers a way to protect consumers while preserving the computing industrys ability to innovate. A firm whose products do not work properly, or are repeatedly hacked, will find its insurance rising, urging it to solve the problem. A firm that takes reasonable steps to make things safe, but which is damaged nevertheless, will ask for an insurance payout that will stop it from going bankrupt(破产). It is here that some problems could perhaps be negotiated. Once again, there are examples: when countless claims against American lightaircraft firms threatened to bankrupt the industry in the 1980s, the government changed the law, limiting their liability for old products. One reason computer security is so bad today is that few people were taking it seriously yesterday. When the Internet was new, that was forgivable. Now that the consequences are known, and the risks posed by bugs and hacking are large and growing, there is no excuse for repeating the mistake. But changing attitudes and behaviours will require economic tools, not just technical ones.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文。 4The first paragraph mainly tells us_Acomputers are used more widelyBcomputers may never be secureCfuture computers are less trustworthyDcomputer hackers are almost everywhereB解析:段落大意题。根据第一段中的“computers baked into everything.little evidence that such equipment will be any more trustworthy”和“Hackers have already.cars and pacemakers”等关键信息可知,计算机的存在和影响力几乎无处不在,但是没有证据表明这些联网的装置会比台式电脑更安全可靠。 5Which is the reason for the computer security problem nowadays?APeople tend to rely on technical solutions.BTechnology firms take security less seriously.CWarnings from relevant departments are absent.DThe software developers lack afterthoughts.A解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“it is tempting to believe that the security problem can be solved with yet more technical wizardry(杰出成就) and a call for further watchfulness”可知,人们不禁认为,只要有了更多的技术成就并呼吁大家提高警惕,安全问题就能得到解决;并结合最后一段可知,人们过度依靠技术上的解决方法,这造成了计算机安全问题的现状,故选A项。6What will happen if codes are weakened according to the passage?ATerrorist attacks are sure to occur more often.BSecurity services cant monitor peoples behaviours.CImportant information may not be guarded safely.DComputer users wont grasp the professional knowledge.C解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Terrorist attacks.security services can better monitor what individuals are up to.” 7The underlined part in Paragraph 6 implies_Athe liability rules can be established soonBusers probably enjoy more new productsCfirms can legally escape promoting innovationDcourts havent power to interfere with firms freedomB解析:推理判断题。 8What can we know about cybersecurity insurance?AIt frees consumers from being attacked from hackers.BIt offers firms funds to improve the ability of innovation.CIt protects firms willing to solve problems from the collapse.DIt increases the economic burden of the technology firms. 9Whats the authors preferred solution to computer security?ARaising users full awareness of encoding.BReporting hackers attacks to hightech firms.CUrging firms to further improve faulty products.DStrengthening economic means further.D解析:推理判断题。 B卷 完形填空(2019南昌项目二模)“I have a letter for you,” my friend Kirsten told me on the phone.“I think its from your mother.” I was _1_, since my mother had been _2_for seven years.A few weeks later Kirsten handed me the _3_ dated Aug.30, 2002.Around then I was preparing for my pilot courses final exam at the _4_school.The students finished the training on _5_ days.I was the first to _6_My mothers letter _7_after I left.Kirsten picked it up from my mailbox, to keep it _8_ she next saw me._9_, a few days later, when it was her turn to leave, she _10_ the letter among the piles of papers she _11_packed into boxes.
