13、submit updated budget project ions each mon th.All the above senten ces are correct.Two terms apply to the mood of En glish verbs: in dicative and subj unctive.An indicative verb makes a statement that is factual, whereas a verb in the subjunctive mood is used to indicate a situati on or con dition
14、that is hypothetical, doubtful, or con diti on al.In the in dicative mood, we would n ever write Harris on were,” “were,” report were,” trip be, or he submit,”but these verbs arecorrect in the examples above because each of the sentences is written in the subjunctive mood; that is, in every case, th
15、e sentenceis describ ing a situatio n that is hypothetical or con diti on al:1. Harris on is not now the C.E.O., but hypothetically he could be chose n for that positi on. The con diti onal n ature of the positi onis suggested by the word if.2. Aga in, as the word if makes clear, I am no t, i n fact

Ion ger, so the sentence speaks of a hypothetical situatio n.4. The trip is not curre ntly postp on ed,
17、so the subj unctive mood is appropriate to suggest a possibility, not an actuality.5. He is not curre ntly submitti ng reports mon thly, so we use the subj un ctive mood to discuss the possibility-not theactuality-of his doing so.For all verbs except to be, the prese nt subj unctive mood is most oft
18、e n made by omitt ing the characteristic s endi ng onverbs with third-pers on sin gular subjects. Thus, whereas in the in dicative mood we would write man leaves,”in thesubjunctive mood we would omit the s gn the verb leave:The judge insisted that the man not leave town.”For the verb to be, we simpl
19、y use be for all prese nt tense subj unctive mood verbs and were for all past tense forms,regardless of whether the subject is sin gular or plural.Some grammar books point out that while many subjunctive-mood phrases are monly used in ordinary speechif Iwere you,”if n eed be,”far be it from me, and
20、so on-strict use of the subjunctive mood is rare, even in the most formalspeak ing and writi ng situati ons. Very few people would write, for example, If he arrive on time, we will have dinnerbefore the show.However, if a form of the verb to be were used in that sentence, all polished writers would
21、agree thatthe subj un ctive is n ecessary:If he were n ot was to arrive on time, we couldhave dinner before the show.”A certa in grammar book lists other mon, fixed expressi ons that are stated in the subj un ctive mood:so be it,bethat as it may,”as it were,and God bless you.TEST YOURSELFWhich of th
