PAGEPAGE7GreenPackagingproductsarelikelytofindincreasingfavorasenvironmentalawarenessandsustainabilityareincreasinglylinkedtohealth,organicandnaturalfoodsandbeverages.Productswillbescrutinizedforsustainablematerialsandpackaging.Infact,themostrecentPirasurveyoftheWorldPackagingOrganizationmembershiprankshealthawarenessasthesinglemostimportantdrivertogrowthinthepackagingindustrywith63.6%ofitsmembershipratingthisfactoras"veryimportant".Therecanbenodiscrepancyinthemindsofecologicallyconsciousconsumersbetweenthecontentsofanaturalororganicproductanditspackaging.Withtheperceivedeffectsofglobalwarmingsopatentlyrealinrecentyears?thetsunamiin2004,long-termdroughtinAustraliaandpartsofAfrica,forinstance?agrowingnumberofindividualsaredoingmoretoreducetheirowncarbonfootprint.Thisincludesmakingconsciouschoicesthatcanreducetheirimpactonenvironmentlikebuyingasmanyproductspackagedonlyinbiodegradableorrecyclablematerials.Theinfluenceofthesupplychainalsocannotbeunderestimated. Inrecentyears,therehasbeenashiftin"power"inthesupplychain.Itusedtobethatmanufacturercalledtheshots,butthesedays,supermarketchainsareusingtheirpowerinthechaintoinfluencehowfoodproductsgettotheshelves.Oneobviousexampleistheretailinggiant,Wal-Mart,whosepackagingsustainabilityscorecardforitsproductsupplierstomaketheirpackagingmoresustainablehasbeeninfluentialindrivingchangesinthepackagingindustry.UsingLess,SavingMoreONEOFTHEMOSTFREQUENTLYemployedtacticstoshrinkaproduct'senvironmentalfootprintissourcereduction,reportsPMMIinitslatestIntelligenceBriefonPackagingTrends.Sourcereduction,suchaslightweightingcontainersandclosures,eliminatingsecondarypackaging,andreplacingrigidpackagingwithflexiblepackaging,notonlyconsumeslessmaterialsbutalsohelpspackagescutcostsacrossthesupplychainoroffsetpriceincreases.While packagers do not necessarily practice source reduction because ofsustainableconcerns,intheendusinglesspackagingalsohelpstheenvironment."Whenmultipliedbymillionsofcontainersandclosure,evensmallweightreductionsadduptoasignificantamountofresinandcanhelpcontrolorevenreducepackaginganddistributioncosts.Inaddition,ifthelighterweightresultsinadensercube,italsocangeneratesavings...duetomoreefficienttransportationutilizationandreducedhandling,"asthePMMIbriefpointsout.LightercapforwaterbottleLESSthanadecadeafterintroducingthefirst2gplasticclosuresforstillwater,Bericaphasanothermajorlightweightingdevelopment.Thenew"HexaLite"closuresforstillwaterandstilldrinksweighinatlessthan1.5gtosaveaminimumof0.5gofplasticresin(HDPE)onnewlightweightneckfinishforPETbottles.Thenewrangeofclosuresincludestwomainsizes:HexaLite26at1.1gorlessonnewneckfinish26at2.2gorless,replacingcurrent26.7mmstandardusedin NorthAmericaandincertainEuropeancountries,generatingtotalweightsavingsof1.7gormore.HexaLite29/25at1.4gorlessonnewneckfinish29/25at2.4gorless,replacingthe30/25worldstandardforstillwater,generatingtotalweightsavingsof2.0g.Suchsavingsperbottlegeneratealmost2,000tonsofresinsavedforeveryonebillionbottlesproduced(andalmost€3millionsaved),andanestimatedreductionof15,000tonsofgreenhousegasemission(carbonfootprint),accordingtoBericap.SustainableAlternativesBIO-BASEDPLASTICSAREmadeofstarchfromplants(corn,sugarcane,potato,etc.)insteadofpetroleum.Theycanreplacemostpetrochemicalplasticsusedtomakebottles,packaging,fabricandmanyotheritems.Risingpetroleumpricescoupledwithanincreaseinmarketdemandforgreenproductshavebolsteredthedemandforbio-basedplastics.Theyarebeingpositionedassustainablealternativestotraditionalplasticsbecausetheycanbecompostableandbiodegradable,althoughnotallbioplasticsmaycomplywithindustrystandardsASTMD6400intheUnitedStatesfor compostable plastics and Europe's EN13432 biodegradability/compostibility.Thebiopolymershareoftheplasticmarketispoisedtogrowfrom1%nowto6-12%by2010.Thecurrentdemandforbioplastic,however,iseighttimesthe2008expectedcapacity.Worldwide,themarketforbioplasticsisprojectedtoreachbetween$15-30billionby2010and$50billionby2015.PLA(polylacticacid),aversatilepolymermadefromcornstarch,isthemostwell-knownoftheseso-calledbiopolymers.Apolyethylenealternativefromsugarcane-basedethanolhasalsobeenlaunched.Otherproducersareturningtoagricultureandforestrywasteassourcesratherthanusingfoodcrops.AmongtheseisInnoviaFilmswhoseNatureFlexfilmisproducedfromwoodpulp(foranapplication,seepage33--Editor).AmatterofsemanticsCOMPOSTABLE, degradable and biodegradable are often mistakenlyinterchanged…CompostablePlasticis,byASTMstandards,"capableofundergoingbiologicaldecompositioninacompostsiteaspartofanavailableprogram,suchthattheplasticisnotvisuallydistinguishableandbreaksdowntocarbondioxide,water,inorganiccompounds,andbiomass,atarateconsistentwithknowncompostablematerials(e.g.cellulose)andleavesnotoxicresidue."Inorderforaplastictobecalledcompostable,threecriterianeedtobemet:Biodegrade-breakdownintoCO2,water,biomassatthesamerateascelluloseDisintegrate-thematerialisindistinguishableinthecompostEco-toxicity-thebiodegradationdoesnotproduceanytoxicmaterialandthecompostcansupportplantgrowth.Biodegradable Plasticwill degradefrom the actionof naturallyoccurringmicroorganism,suchasbacteria,fungietc.,overaperiodoftime.Note,thatthereisnorequirementforleaving"notoxicresidue",andaswellasnorequirementforthetimeitneedstotaketobiodegrade.DegradablePlasticwillundergo asignificantchangeinitschemicalstructureunderspecificenvironmentalconditionsresultinginalossofsomeproperties.Aplasticthereforemaybedegradablebutnotbiodegradableoritmaybebiodegradablebutnotcompostable.(AdaptedfromWorldC)PlasticContainersUnderAttackENVIRONMENTAL CRUSADERS have often vilified petroleum-basedplastics.Currently,oneofthe"hottopics"amongtheseactivistshasbeentheuseof"toxic"bisphenolA(BPA)inpolycarbonateplastics.Recently,however,theEuropeanFoodSafetyAuthorityconcludedthatthereislittlerisktohumansfromBPAinconsumerproductsatcurrentlevels.EFSAsaidtheexpertpaneltaskedtoevaluatethesafetyofthecommonplasticadditivefoundthatthehumanbodyrapidlymetabolizesandeliminatesBPA,andthereforeitpresentsnorisktoinfants,children,oradults."Theconclusionsfromthosestudiesandcomprehensivesafetyevaluationsbygovernmentbodiesworldwidearethatpolycarbonatebottlesaresafeforconsumeruse,"statestheInternationalBottledWaterAssociation(IBWA).Flexiblevs.rigidRESEARCH findings on the relationship between flexible packaging sustainability by Franklin Associates, an independent third party research demonstratesthesmallerenvironmentalfootprintofflexibleresealablepackagingascomparedtorigidalternatives,accordingtoZip-Pak.The life cycle inventory (LCI) included eight packaging systems (flexiblepackagingformats with resealable closuresas wellas rigid packaging formats)consistingofsixdelimeatpackagesandtwobreakfastcerealpackages.KeyfindingsoftheLCIincludethatproductspackagedinflexiblepoucheswithresealableclosureshadlowerenergyconsumption,solidwastegeneration,andgreenhousegasemissionsthantherigidsystemsincludedintheanalysis.Further,althoughtransportationaccountedforlessthan17%oftotalenergyforallsystems,theresultsshowthattransportationenergyrequirementsforthereusablerigidcontainersarehigherthanthosefortheflexiblepackagingsystems.IBWAsaysinitswebsitethat"100%ofbottledwatercontainersarerecyclable,wherefacilitiesexist"?thatcaveatisimportantbecauseveryfewcountrieshavelegislatedrecyclingandhavethefacilitiestoprocessplasticpackaging."Containersforbottledwater,madefromPETplastic,whicharebecomingincreasinglylighterinweight,accountedforlessthanone-thirdofonepercentofallwasteproducedintheUnitedStates[theworld'slargestconsumerofbottledwater]in2005",accordingtothebottledwatertradeassociation, whereas"Thelargerbottlesfoundonthewatercoolerathomeorintheofficearesanitizedandcanbereusedanaverageof50timesbeforethebottledwatercompanyrecyclesthem."AGrowingConsumerDemandAccordingtoaglobalfoodpackagingsurveyconductedinmid-2007byTheNielsenCompany,90%ofconsumerswhocitedrecyclablebagsandpackagingasakeydriverofstorechoicewouldbewillingtogiveupanaspectofpackagingifitmeantitwouldhelptheenvironment.Almosthalf(49%)claimedthey’ddispensewith stackable/storable packaging and convenience packaging (48%), but factors,suchashygieneandprotection,arelessnegotiable."Asglobalconcernandawareness abouttheneedto
