fleshandgeneralexhaustion.Ononeoccasion,in1535,anEnglishshiparrivedinNewfoundlandwith

itscrewseriouslyill.Themen'slivesweresavedbyIroquoisIndianswhogavethemvegetableleaves

toeat.Graduallyitcametoberealizedthatscurvywascausedbysomelackinthesailors,dietand

CaptainCook,whowastodiscoverAustraliaandNewZealand,establishedthefactthescurvycould

beavoidedbyprovisionoffreshfruitforthesailors.

Nowadaysitisunderstoodthatadietwhichcontainsnothingharmfulmayyetresultinseriousdisease

suchsubstancesareknownandtheyaregivenletterstoidentifythem,A,B,C,D,andsoon.Different
