Characterization Learning About Characters Protagonist and Antagonist lProtagonist lCharacter who drives the action of the story by striving to achieve a goal. lCan be more than one and they can change lAntagonist lCharacter who hinders the protagonists progress towards his/her goal. lCan be more than one and they can change Dynamic and Static Characters lDynamic: changes in the story lPersonality, character, values change; not physical changes lStatic: does NOT change in the story Round and Flat Characters lRound: fully developed, 3-dimensional lYou get to know them well from multiple aspects lFlat: not fully developed lNot usually major characters lUsually there to help the plot along Internal and External Conflicts lInternal: within a single character lCan be many in a single character lCan be in conjunction with External lNot all characters must have one lExternal: between two characters or forces. lCan be many in a single character lCan be in conjunction with External lNot all characters must have one Motivation lWhat makes a character do what they do? lWhat are the driving forces that explain their actions? Characterization Techniques lDirect Characterization: author tells you something directly about a character l“Jim was a proud man.” lIndirect Characterization: author communicates something about a character without saying it directly. l5 different techniques Indirect Characterization Techniques lSpoken Words lJim said, “I really dont know what to do. I never seem to know what to do.” lPrivate Thoughts lJim pondered the meaning of life and his place in the universe. lActions lJim stomped through the halls, his fists clenched, bumping into kids along the way.
