james van pelt from aces, who made numerous, helpful suggestions to improve the clarity of the text), jerilyn van leer (west hartford public schools), and connecticut digital library/request staff (steve cauffman and gail hurley). the section on wilson biographies plus was rewritten by jane emerson in february 2003 due to significant product changes. in addition, jane emerson prepared two appendices, “how do i register to use iconn?” and “infotrac database content”; betty goyette prepared the appendix, “strategies for bringing iconn to your school district” and the enclosed brochure, 10 big ideas for using iconn; a team consisting of jane emerson, lois garrison (harwinton consolidated school), betty goyette and jerilyn van leer developed the appendix, “sample learning activities”; (by gail hurley)149joining request.150about iconnthe connecticut digital libraryiconn is part of the connecticut education network. it provides all students, faculty and residents with online access to essential library and information resources. it is administered by the connecticut state library in conjunction with the department of higher education. through iconn, a core level of information resources including secured access to licensed databases is available to every citizen in connecticut. in addition, specialized, research, information resources are available to college students and faculty. iconn began in 2000 when the connecticut general assembly provided funding for the purchase of licensed information databases for connecticuts libraries, schools and colleges. the digital library was one of several recommendations by lieutenant governor m. jodi rell in the fall of 1999.the goals of iconn are: to ensure universal access to a core level of library and information resources for every resident of connecticut through their public library, school, college, and from home. to help provide necessary information resources to every school in connecticut so that all students are prepared to function in an information society. to provide information resources to the increasing number of students taking advantage of on-line courses at connecticuts colleges and universities. to enhance the quality of teaching, research and education at connecticuts colleges and universities by supporting online information resources. to support the information needs of all connecticut citizens.governanceiconn is a joint project of the connecticut state library and the department of higher education. the project is administered by the connecticut state library under the auspices of the commission for educational technology and the connecticut digital library advisory board (cdlab). funding is provided by the connecticut general assembly. backgroundsome of the files below are in .pdf. pdf documents are best viewed with adobe acrobat reader 5.0 or higher. to download a free copy of the reader, visit /products/acrobat/readstep2.html. there are also files in microsoft word format and powerpoint. provides links to workshops and presentations, and also to user guides, search tips, online tutorials and other online resources. directories links to statewide directories of librarian e-mail addresses, public libraries, listservs, and continuing education for librarians. support materials is the best place for staff to obtain printable and downloadable promotional materials, including press releases, bookmarks and posters, articles about iconn and presentations; for technical support contacts; and for updated iconn usage statistics. help for librarians/teachers provides detailed iconn help information for staff with links to faqs and technical support contacts. site index indexes all sections of the iconn homepage relevant to staff. clicking on the iconn logo above the navigation buttons will always take you back to the iconn homepage.stress to your faculty and students that iconn assures access to a library that never closes its doors. it is always available online from homes, from school, and from public libraries.the iconn databasesyou access all iconn databases from the “welcome to iconn” homepage. the access from school and the access from home links under the k-12 school bus may list slightly different databases. when students access iconn from home, they use their public library card number as the password and are taken to their public library database page, not their school database page. your public libraries may subscribe to other databases that may be incorporated among the iconn databases, creating the possibility of different database lists.infotrac onefile is a meta-database, and most of the other gale group databases are included in onefile (re: appendix). onefile includes indexing for more than 6,000 magazines, business and scholarly journals of which more than 3,100 are full-text, 5 newspaper indexes (no full-text newspapers), and reports from 89 newswire services. if you want one-stop shopping, this is the database to use, but it may be overwhelming for many students.audience: middle school and upexpanded academic asap contains all the refereed journals, other scholarly journals, and upper-level magazines indexed in onefile. best for higher level secondary students and faculty.audience: high school infotrac student edition is specifically designed for secondary school libraries. it features over 360 student-appropriate journals (most full-text), maps, newspaper articles, and reference materials. to see a comparison of the student-oriented databases, look under “support materials” on the iconn homepage.audience: high schoolinfotrac junior edition includes some of the materials in the kids edition, plus an expanded list of magazines and reference resources.audience: middle school designed for k-6, this database indexes age-appropriate, full-text magazines, news articles, maps, almanacs, and other reference works. audience: elementary schoolinforme! contains indexing and full-text of over 60 hispanic journals and one full-text newspaper. these are periodicals originating in spanish, not just translations.audience: middle school and oldera good multi-source database that fits between infotrac student edition (which has fewer resources) and infotrac onefile (which has more). this database does include the full-text of the washington post and christian science monitor.audience: middle school and olderprofessional collection is the custom selection of 300 journals focused on matters of interest to professional educators. it is very important to demonstrate this database to the teachers and administrators in your school.audience: adultcustom newspapers has the full text of four major newspapers.audience: elementary school and olderfull-text background resources in social studies, science, biography, history and literature. especially strong in analytical literary materials.audience: middle school and olderin-depth biographical materials on over 100,000 individuals from antiquity to the present.audience: middle school and olderfull global coverage of finance, economic, and marketing news, including stock prices, industry statistics, and business journals.audience: high school and oldera wealth of medical information including medical and drug dictionaries, and 500 full text medical journals and magazines.audience: middle school and olderplot summaries, lists of award-winning books, recommended reading lists, are all availa
