a research on analyzing the intercommunities of love views between lin daiyu and scarlettabstractthe issue on love is the most important topic in daily life since human-beings are existed. in the two classic books-a dream of red mansions of the chinese writer cao xueqin and gone with the wind of the american writer margaret mitchell, it indicates that there are different patterns of love which express the love views of typical females, especially lin daiyu in a dream of red mansions and scarlett in gone with the wind. though love shows its various characters on many patterns, its nature retains the same through many common points on the two main characters who are in different background but their love views lie in the common pointthey rebel against the tradition and realize the love on freedom. the two females represent the typical love style in the turning point of traditional love developing process, which is different from the falling into love at sight or marry at once after their parents match the marriage. both of them have individual grow backgrounds, act in different ways, but on the aspect of expressing their love views, they have much in common. so it is a reflection of the essence of love nature without any covers or backgrounds confrontations. this thesis analyzes their personalities and the love expressing ways. furthermore, the thesis finds out the heroines love views which are similar between lovers. key wordspatriarchal; rebellion consciousness; love views;introductiona dream of red mansions, which cao xueqin used the whole life to complete in the middle 18th century, is chinas first historical literary work exclusive for women new features. mitchells gone with the wind written in 1936, two hundred years later than a dream of red mansions, with the background of the american civil war and postwar reconstruction, is reflecting the female survival condition in the war, which shows magnificent epic meaning. cao xueqin and mitchell, although in different times, their thoughts are beyond time, and they understand the womens fate deeply, at the same time, they can observe and think with the new visions. therefore, this paper use the female love views as the main line, to analysis the intercommunities in different cultures. margaret mitchell is an american author and journalist. one novel by mitchell was published during her lifetime, which is the american civil war-era novel, gone with the wind. margaret mitchell began writing gone with the wind in 1926 to pass the time while recovering from an auto-crash injury that refused to heal. in april 1935, harold latham of macmillan, an editor who was looking for new fiction, read what she had written and saw that it could be a best-seller. after latham agreed to publish the book, mitchell worked for another six months checking the historical references, and rewrote the opening chapter several times. mitchell and her husband john marsh, a copy editor by trade, edited the final version of the novel. mitchell wrote the books final moments first, and then wrote the events that lead up to it. as to what became of her star-crossed lovers, rhett and scarlett, after the novel ended, mitchell did not know, and said, for all i know, rhett may have found someone else who was less difficult.” gone with the wind is the only novel by mitchell published during her lifetime. it is that people worldwide would think it was the true story of the old south and how it was changed by the american civil war and reconstruction. however, another work named a dream of red mansions, created by cao xueqin, a qing dynasty chinese writer, which is one of the four great classical novels of chinese literature, is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the rise and decay of author cao xueqins own family and, by extension, of the qing dynasty. as the author details in the first chapter, it is intended to be a memorial to the women he knew in his youth: friends, relatives and servants. the novel is remarkable not only for its huge cast of characters and psychological scope, but also for its precise and detailed observation of the life and social structures typical of 18th-century chinese aristocracy. two major themes that are prevalent throughout the novel are the nature of reality and of the truth. the name of the main family, jia (賈, pronounced ji), is a homophone with the chinese character ji 假, meaning false or fictitious. another family in the book has the surname zhen (甄, pronounced zhn), a homophone for the word real (真). thus, cao xueqin suggests that the novels family is both a realistic reflection and a fictional or dream version of his own family.besides, the protagonists of the two great novels, scarlett in gone with the wind and lin daiyu in a dream of red mansions have many aspects in common. scarlett ohara, the sixteen-year-old daughter of gerald and ellen ohara, was not beautiful, but had an effect on men, especially when she took notice of them. the ohara is a wealthy irish immigrant family owned the tara plantation where the story opens. gone with the wind takes place in the southern united states in the state of georgia during the american civil war (18611865) and the reconstruction era (18651877) that followed the war. the novel unfolds against the backdrop of rebellion in seven southern states, georgia among them, have declared their secession from the united states (the union) and formed the confederate states of america (the confederacy), after abraham lincoln was elected president with no ballots from ten southern states where slavery was legal. a dispute over states rights has arisen60 involving enslaved african people who were the source of manual labor on cotton plantations throughout the south. when boys talks about the wars, scarlett is always indifferent with these nonsense affairs in her mind. her forthright irish blood is always at variance with the french teachings of style from her mother, ellen ohara. scarlett marries charles hamilton, frank kennedy, and rhett butler, all the time wishing she is married to ashley wilkes instead. she has three children, one from each husband: wade hampton hamilton (son to charles hamilton), ella lorena kennedy (daughter to frank kennedy) and eugenie victoria bonnie blue butler (daughter to rhett butler). she miscarries a fourth child, the only one she wanted, during a quarrel with rhett when she accidentally falls down the stairs. scarlett is secretly scornful of melanie wilkes, wife to ashley, who shows nothing but love and devotion towards scarlett, and considers her a sister throughout her life because scarlett married melanies brother charles. scarlett is unaware of the extent of rhetts love for her or that she might love him. in a dream of red mansions, lin daiyu is jia baoyus first younger cousin and his primary love. she is the daughter of lin ruhai, a yangzhou official, and lady jia min, baoyus paternal aunt. miss lin is sick, but beautiful in a way that is unconventional. she also suffers from a respiratory ailment. the novel properly starts at chapter 3 with daiyus arrival at the rong mansion after the death of her mother. with fragile emotion and easily jealousy, daiyu is nevertheless an extremely accomplished poet and artist. the novel designates her in one of the twelve beauties of jinling, and describes her as a lonely, proud and ultimately tragic figure. daiyu is a flower from the frame story, and the purpose of her mortal birth is to repay baoyu with tears for watering her in her previous incarnation.in the novels frame story, a sentient stone, abandoned by the goddess nwa when she mended the heavens a eons ago, begs a taoist and a monk to bring it with them to see the world. the stone, accompanied by a character the attendant shen ying , was given a chance to learn from the human existence, and enters the mortal realm. this is also a chance for vermilion pearl plant to repay her debt of gratitude given from the attendant shen ying. it casts off its plant nature and takes the human form of a girl. this old romance is the previous fate of lin daiyu and jia baoyu.in her life time, lin daiyu has a special bond with jia baoyu, who shares his love of music and poetry. baoyu, however, is predestined to marry another cousin, xue baochai, whose grace and intelligence exemplifies an ideal woman, but with whom he lacks an emotional connection. the romantic rivalry and friendship among the three characters against the backdrop of the familys declining fortunes forms the main story in the novel.these two novels try to explore and ponder over the true situation of women and also promote the right of words of independent women, this paper makes an overall analysis of love views in gone with the wind and a dream of red mansions, explores the intercommunities of the feminist love in different periods and different backgrounds.chapter i the intercommunities of love views between scarlett and lin daiyu 1.1 common spiritual pursuit of love some people believe that we all have one special person whom we are meant to be with. this one special person isnt just someone you find attractive or have fun with. its someone you have a deep, almost spiritual connection with. its your soul mate who respects your inner desire. and others think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and thats what everyone wants. but a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything thats holding you back, the most important person youll ever meet, because they know you as knowing themselves. but to live with a soul mate forever? no. too painful. soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then they leave.from eat, pray, love. scarlett has married to three husbands and only one of them named rhett is her final true lover. but she always wants to marry ashley who is her illusionary love image since she is young but ashley does not love her at all. from ashley to rhett, the love view of scarlett is gradually appearing, which is to find the one who can really understand her and has the similar life attitude and personality with her. as for lin daiyu, she keeps a constant love on jia baoyu who is also sensitive, rebellious and mundane so that they can enjoy their spiritual world away from the moral world. from this aspect, it can be concluded that the two heroines have the same spiritual pursuit of love, to find their soul mates, though they do not stay with their soul mates together in the end.1.2 common interpretation of love according to fromm, the art of love says “love is to give not get.” the two heroines explain this love theory through their own ways. scarlett loves ashley at first, she spares no efforts attracting his attention, in order to have him, and she even marries to melanies brother. until she is with rhett her final husband, she realizes what true love is, although she is reluctant to gives birth to babies, instead, to keep a good figure at first, then after the leaving from angry rhett, she finally knows how much he loves her and how selfish she used to be. this the mature love views of scarlett. the relationship between lin daiyu and jia baoyu has experienced a process from innocent love to mature love. lin unlike xue baochai who just cares about the honorable status and power in the loyal family if she marries jia baoyu, however, lin is born to love jia baoyu, she just cares about the affection with him, both their mental and physical needs, in the book, she cries for him, smiles because of him and even live for their love. the two heroines interpret the same love meaning, they finally find the man who matches them both on spirits and personality, and they realize that love is active reaction and company.1.3 common love objectivepsychologist abraham maslow did much of the classic work on motivation theory. he believed that the key to motivating people is understanding that they are motivated by needs, which are arranged in a hierarchy of importance. this hierarchy is known as maslows need hierarchy. self actualization is the highest level of hierarchy needs: the need to realize ones potential, to grow, to be creative, and to accomplish .for scarlett, she presented a vivid image in front of love whether when she is a young lady or when she becomes a wife. when she loves someone, she would never wait to be loved; instead she will actively attract attentions and dare to express her love. as a woman, she may not be a good wife or a good mother, but she finally find her true love not to be cheated by the imaginary gentleman created by herself in her lifelong time. there is a legendary in a dream in red mansions which tells a moving love story. in the west, on the bank of the sacred river, beside the stone of three incarnations there grew a vermilion pearl plant which was watered every day with sweet dew by the attendant shen ying in the palace of red jade. as the months and years went by and the vermilion pearl plant imbibed the essences of heaven and earth and the nourishment of rain and dew, it cast off its plant nature and took human form, albeit only that of a girl. all day long she roamed beyond the sphere of parting sorrow, staying her hunger with the fruit secret love and quenching her thirst at the sea of brimming grief. but her heart was heavy because she had not repaid the care lavished on her. lin daiyu is the human form of the vermilion pearl plant, so her final life goal is to give all herself to jia baoyu.chapter ii similar ways of love performance 2.1 brave utterancefacing their respective lovers, scarlett and lin daiyu express their affection bravely. when scarlett knows ashley the one she loves would marry another girl, she tells ashley that she loves him directly. when she is refused by ashley and he is going to marry melanie, she does not believe it and she says:” i know i love you and i want to be your wife. you dont love melanie.” scarlett knows that ashley is the one she wants and only he can gives her a happy marriage. not like other ladies, scarlett understands that each girl has the right to choose who she likes and spares no efforts to get it. lin daiyu is an example, she is born to love jia baoyu, when facing him, she is not so courageous as scarlett to express love frankly, but as a traditional chinese girl, she says what other contemporary girls are not allowed to say. in the article, daiyu is left alone when shi xiangyun comes to play with baoyu, she feels upset that no one cares about her even baoyu, but later baoyu comes back, she complains about it. after baoyu responds as she wishes, she says:” “do i want you to be less close to her? what do you take me for? its just that my feelings are hurt.” there is a obvious statement of her affection to baoyu with more misunderstanding and jealousy from lady shi. another wave of their love is from xue baochai who has a gold to match baoyus jade. lin daiyu is so clever to express her worry and she wants to make sure that baoyu loves her instead of others, so she says: “how dense you are! you have jade, and someone else has gold to match it. so dont you have a warm scent to match her cold scent?” the words speaks for their mind that both of the two girls dare to pursue their love even with some social limitations. 2.2 unladylike behaviorsshe is a southern plantation owners daughter, beautiful and lively, childlike and carefree. because of his fathers indulgence and in numerous and sisters, scarlett has developed the haughty, rebellious, stubborn and coveted vanity character. she has learned how to dress and attract the attention of the boys. in her philosophy, she thinks that she should be the focus of all men, the center of life, and everyone should turn around her, live for her. she falls in love with the ashley; at the same time she is also assertive that ashley is also love her. ashley introduces his fiance to scarlett but she still thinks only she is to be loved. in order to revenge, in the dancing party, she is sucking up every man, even though she hates them, she can let every man around her turn to stimulate ashley. hearing that ashley swears love to melanie, she cant stand this insult, she throws a vase angrily to the wall. when she is still in mourning, scarlett “tossed her head and sped out of booth” (margaret, 189), hurriedly steps into the dancing floor, and begins her another rebel life. she begins to think for herself instead of letting others think for her again. at that very time, she forgets herself and her rearing neglects the look on the chaperons faces, cares not what she will be criticized, she just wants to dance, to release her partly from mourning. it means to follow the step you heart wants you to go, regardless of others. in a dream of red mansions, daiyu has a simple, direct character and often ignoring moral codes unconsciously. in the point of view of baochai who keeps keep the family law, women only should do some textile things, which daiyu mostly lacks, but she is very good at poems. she and jia baoyu watch the west chamber, which is a forbidden book in that time. she even uses the words in that book when they make poem. the attention to the individual life and emotional needs is opposite to the traditional moral codes. in their eyes, love firstly needs you to be real and then to inform the one you really care. 2.3 constant pursuit of soul matesscarletts whole life is mostly confused by love, but her brave and forthright personality makes her dare to break through bound to fight for her own happiness. she lacks understanding of ashley, but she has made an unshakeable determination to pursue her happiness. and in order to keep the promise of love, she bears much pain in the war, to take care of the rival in love. because she believes that ashley loves her and he is the only man who can give her lif
