the tradi-tional criticism, based on political practice and moral judge. this thesis is aiming at transcending the limitation of traditional criticism,exploring the artistic channing of the heroine, searlett ohara, in the novel, so that we can have a comprehensive understanding of this figure. when we finish the novel after reading earefifily, we cant help praising the courage and courage of sea,rlett ohara, then we will question omselves, where does her courage come from? in my opinion, i divide my paper into two parts.1 extraordinary courage in face of difficulty and re-alitythe figure the situation in america,which is so-caned disturbed world that has produced the heroine of this great works.being the daughter of owner of tara plantation, searlett ohara inherited her fathers thought and power, chose a way of seeking for survival and eager for development. the cruel war end-ed the idle and casual life of sea/lett, which threw her into hellsuddenly. luckily surviving the fire of atlanta, she had fiothing but her great spirit, and she faced the hungry of physical and the threatening of life and then the living competition and choice be-tween good and bad. confronting with the completely strange and extremely cruel living surroundings, young scarlett developed her own living space with the attitude of all the people are disturbed except me, and strong will of to be the unique in the world bravely. when the other people cried for the downfall the old times, she always said to herself in calmness:i will never look back the past days. because who can move forward burdening with sorrowfifi memory. in her deep heart, she even has the spe-cial relaxation and fantasy escaping from the restriction of traditional regulation. so she insisted on looking forward. she actually did what she had said. she always faced all the challenge of the reality directly. when she overcame all the unimaginable hardship to save tara and herself from the damage of the war, all the admonition and moral instruction mother had imbued into her were fallen off like the leaves in the wind of autumn. as for this, scarlett looked it as this all the standards and value have been changed. so she herself has to change so as to adapt to this new world. there-fore, she could constantly adapted to her own time and society with extraordinary courage to face all kinds of insult, threat and defeat from conservative power, with her special wisdom and arbitrary,with her amazing action which surprised and terrified all the world. in order to pay the tax of tam, she acted as the younger sister of butler so as to borrow some money, however, she got insult from butler. in spite of frustration, she tried her best to survive tam from economic crisis. being the oldest daughter in newly-grown track of bourgeois economy and then became a earlier bourgeois in the south of america. it was her spirit and courage that have helped her stand firmly among all the slave-owners. to some extent, this is the spirit of .all the americans, readers and audience love and sympatlfize scarlett for decades, because there is a feeling of hometown, bnt scarier is the perfect model of this
