quality-oriented education and the development of the new curriculum reformation, the affection has been listed into the teaching goals, and the eq development has been a focus of the curriculum introductiona modern educationist has ever said: education can not be without love. just alike a pool without water cant be called a pool, education without affection or without love, it cannot be called education. it is true that affection is the basic of ones personality and the catalyst of will power. nothing but emotion can impress people with unimaginable power. since the curriculum reformation was put forward, there has been a lot of discussion about the teaching of the new standard english (nse), and under this theory, several different versions of the new standard english textbooks spring up and there is one point that all the textbooks share, which is the emphasis on the students full development from morality, intelligence, physical condition, art finery and so forth, especially the emphasis on the students eq development. it seems that english teaching has nothing to do with the eq development, however, there are a lot of eq factors which are embodied in the english teaching material that it is a new challenge for the english teachers to carry out the nse and try hard to combine the material with affection so as to develop students eq and pave them a better way for students future development. 2 emotion quotient (eq)2.1、 definition of eqeq is the abbreviation for emotional quotient, which is also to weigh a persons ability to control his or her emotion, it is a kind of intelligence which is related to the emotion.according to gremy, an american psychologist, eq includes five aspects, which can be listed as the following: the ability to understand ones emotion, the ability to regulate or adjust ones emotion, the ability to enforce self-encouragement, the ability to perceive others emotion, the ability to communicate with others. whats more, in 1996, two american psychologists gave a more complete and systematic description on the connotation of eq, that is, the ability to perceive, appreciate and express emotion, the ability to boost thinking about emotion, the ability to understand and experience emotion, the ability to adjust emotion so as to boost mental development.it can be concluded from the above that eq is arose from the affection or emotion and it will activate and enhance the possibility of ones mental development in a benign direction. it is a kind of quality about ones emotion which is included in the psychology quality. it is believed that a person success mostly depends on his or her eq, about 80%, while the iq only takes up about 20%.consequently, eq is a prerequisite to a persons success, it is significant and imperative to enforce the development of students eq in the quality-oriented education2.2.1 the necessity of eq developing for a very long period, the intelligence education has been in the dominant place in our education system, which makes education to be just a means of transmitting knowledge and developing intelligence. however, it neglects the cultivation of some eq factors such as the affection, the value judgment, the personality, the communication, this misplay of education can lead to a series of problems such as individual misbehavior, taking drugs, alcholistic, violence, crime, suicide. from this point of view, whether the eq education is systematic or not is of great importance with the overall national quality, and has something to do with the individuals future adaptation to the society and the development in the more and more competitive world. as a result, it is very necessary and great urgent to carry out the eq education in a more purposeful and orderly way so that students can not only apply their knowledge and skills in the society practice or communication, but also foster a reasonable sense of personality, good adaptivity and strong responsibility.2.2.2 the importance of eq in english teaching one of the main points of the nse is to develop students affection and attitude, and combine the affection with the english teaching. the course of teaching is a course that both teachers and students communicate with each other with the affection from their bottom of heart, and it is also a special cognitive course, and this specialty can be embodied on the affection. without the support of affection, it is difficult for the rational things to find a material carrier (the carrier refers to a kind of means that can embody the rational things.). however, the teachers devotion with affection can get a surprising result. no matter how vivid or how wonderful the lessons the teacher gives, what the students can get is just the knowledge which they can cognize, but they can not feel a kind of sense of agreement. only when the teacher gives lessons with true heart and true feelings from their bottom of heart can the students affection is inevitably in the interpersonal communication. however, affection, to a greater extent, must be expressed and transmitted through language, if the language is proper or appropriate, it can enhance communication, friendship, respect of each other.the eq has a direct or indirect influence on the language learning. the personality of upward and outgoing can be helpful to encourage the students to gain more chances to study language. a strong desire, a great interest and a bold practice spirit is beneficial for students to promote study efficiency. a strong will power and more self-confidence can help students to overcome difficulties in learning language.the eq development is a crucial aspect of the students all-round development, the eq development can be put into the routine teaching of english and combined with detailed content.3 new standard english (nse)3.1 the background of nseas we all know, we are now stepping into the 21st century. according to a series of documents of the united nations, the basic skills for humans survival and development in the 21st century are the efficiency of the mother language, a mastery of the foreign language and the ability to operate a computer. it is said that over 85% of the academic thesis in the international world are published or professed in the english language. moreover, almost all the main academic periodicals and journals of various subjects ate published in english. english has become a dominant universal working language in all kinds of international situations; it is also a main applied language on internet. therefore, under this great trend, to reform and to reinforce the basic english education, especially the basic english teaching become more and more important. furthermore, to cultivate some basic qualities such as the affection, the attitude and the value in english teaching becomes more necessary and crucial.3.1.1 the characteristics of nse textbooksthe purpose for the new standard english in senior high school is not only to teach students to speak and write several sentences of a foreign language, but also to arm the students with the concept that to learn english is a way to promote the development of affection, attitude and value, and mental state, and to promote their comprehensive qualities. the affection is of great importance to humans development. the upward and active affection and self-confidence undoubtedly can enhance students self-learning and can effectively promote the efficiency of learning.when we look back on the history of drawing up the english teaching programs, we can see that the new english teaching program or the teaching syllabus is summit to the rapid development of nowadays society, it not only carry forward the old experience, but also pregnant with the new ideas.as we know, the teaching program or the syllabus has very close relationship with the textbooks, the syllabus id the basis for compiling a textbook, while a textbook is usually a reflection of the syllabus. in accordance with the new standard english, we can make a summary on its characteristics.first, the content of the textbook presses close to students life as well as to the modern social situations. it not only embodies the ideological education, but also permeates a great deal of knowledge about natural and social sciences.second, every module in the textbook includes the language structures, the function part and the topic and the task-based activities. compare with the old textbooks, the language in the new standard english textbook is much more motivation, confidence, will power and the awareness of cooperation.interest is the best guidance, a great interest in english is the key to the successful english learner. motivation can provide directions for students towards success in english learning. in fact, as for the inner and outer factors, the inner motivation can last long and ensure students to achieve long-term goals in language learning. besides interest and motivation, self-confidence and will power to overcome difficulties are the other two important factors. english is different from our mother tongue; to most of the chinese english learners, english is a brand new language in the beginning, difficulties are inevitable. therefore, to help the students to build up the confidence that “ i can learn english well” and to foster the students will power to overcome difficulties is essential for the english teachers.nowadays, competition and cooperation are standing in a line in every corner of the society, cultivating students awareness as well as the ability to cooperate with people is a major task in the english teaching.inter-personal communication is also a great point in english learning, as the process of inter-personal communication is also a process of going from myself to others.3.2 requirements to the english teacherin order to know more about students affective attitude and help them to cultivate the positive spirit and overcome the negative mental statement, teachers should, first of all, build up a good relationship with students, as only in this way can a teacher really gets to know that the students think or want and can the students be willing to communicate with the teacher or believe in the teacher. besides, teachers should try to create an environment that enables the students to build up a harmonious democratic collective.( it refers to the environment which all the students study in)second, to actually realize the affective communication between teachers and students, some effective ways for communicating and exchanging ideas must be built up. teachers can discuss with their students the way, the time and the place about the affective communication. in this course, teachers must respect the differences among the individual wishes of the students, and beware not to hurt students self-esteem.third, the foremost task for the nse is still to develop students comprehensive ability to use the language. the emphasis on students affection must be combined with the english teaching course. therefore, teacher must penetrate the affection discuss into the english teaching content and the course. for example, teachers can list a set of activities that students often do, and then guide them to classify them into two, one is that can be completed by oneself while the other must be cooperated with others then teacher can discuss with students the reasons for why they should cooperate with others to finish the activities. in this way, the teacher is penetrating the cooperative spirit in to the english teaching.last but not least, teachers must help students to overcome their problems of affection immediately, so as to make students to achieve mutual enhancement between the success of english learning and the development of the affection. commonly speaking, students affection has something to do with their success or failure in learning english, success can advance the development of affection, and positive affection can boost greater success in english learning.4 eq factors that affect english learninggenerally speaking, the eq factors that affect english learning can be categorized into two: one is about the individuality factors such as anxiety, motivation, inhibition, extroversion or introversion and self-esteem. and the other is the relational factors including empathy, classroom transactions, cross-cultural process.anxiety is quite possibly the affective factors that must persuasively obstructs the learning process, it is associated with negative feelings such as uneasiness, frustration, self-doubt, apprehension and tension, and these negative feelings can cause distraction and waste of energy which should be used for memorization and processing on a type of thinking, although it is a major obstacle to language learning, anxiety can be reduced.making mistake is implicit in language learning, in the process of growing up, inhibition develops and an ego which is distinct from others is identified, at the same time affective traits begin to form, with greater awareness comes, the need to protect a fragile ego, if necessary, by avoiding whatever might threaten the self, strong criticism and ridiculous words can greatly weaken the ego, and the weaker the ego, the higher the walls of inhibition, therefore, language teachers should not ignore the affective factors when establishing the most appropriate policy of error-correction for the students particular situations.the extroverts are often stereotyped as being out-going and talkative ,and therefore, they can be better language learners, as they are more likely to participate openly in the classroom and seek out opportunities to practise. the introverts, by implication, might be considered less apt language learners, since they seem to be too reserved, self-restrained. as a matter of fact, extroversion has to do with the need for receiving ego enhancement, self-esteem and a sense of wholeness from others, while introversion refers to the degree that the individuals derive this sense from within themselves. the introverts can have a great inner strength of characters and may show
