In many homes, the willow pattern plates (named after the willow tree in the centre of the design) are kept for special occasions, when important guests come to dinner. But where does the willow pattern come from? The first plates were made in about 1780, and were based on Chinese designs. They were copied from similar plates taken to Britain in ship s which were also carrying tea. But Josiah Spode, who produced the most famous plates, mixed elements from different Chinese designs.
