Unit 2 English around the world.阅读理解Have you ever found yourself in this situation: You hear a song you used to sing when you were a childa bit of nostalgia(怀旧) or “blast from the past,” as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listenandrepeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburghs website Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”1The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to _.Arecall the pastBattract the readersCintroduce the topicDcompare the childhood with the present2According to the passage which language doesnt share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages?AHungarian. BSpanish.CItalian. DEnglish.3Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that _.Asinging is the best way to learn a languageBthe brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the wordsCa listenrepeat method is very effective for any language learnerDDr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other4In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?AA mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.BA child is going to have his first music lesson.CA student is going to learn a new English song.DAn American is going to learn some Chinese.答案与解析本文讲述的是一项关于音乐和外语学习之间关系的研究。1C细节理解题。本文开头通过举例导入话题,人们都清楚地记得儿时唱歌的歌词是因为音乐有助于记忆,故选C。2A细节理解题。根据文章第五段“It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish.”可知A项正确。故选A。3B细节理解题。根据最后两段对研究的具体描述可知B项正确。故选B。4D推理判断题。从最后一段可知,此项研究对于外语学习者非常有用,可知D项正确。故选D。.七选五(2017福建省三明市月考)The guy who tried to edit EnglishThe English vocabulary is not only huge, it is also full of words that mean practically the same thing. Get, obtain, acquire. Shine, gleam, glow, sparkle. _1_That was the thinking of a British writer named CK. Ogden, who in the 1930s promoted a new form of English with a vocabulary of just 850 words. He called the project Basic English. _2_Ogden arrived at his 850word list through experimentation. The words he finally included were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete. _3_Because any verbal (动词的) idea could be expressed with a small number of “operators” words like come, go, take, have, make, be and do Ogden argued that most verbs were unnecessary. In Basic English, eat is “have a meal” and forget is “go from memory.”Winston Churchill was a fan of the concept as a way to get foreigners to speak English, and he encouraged the BBC to use it._4_ Roosevelt, who expressed mild interest, joked that Churchills famous speech about offering his “blood, toil, tears and sweat” to his country wouldnt have been so exciting if he “had been able to offer the British people only blood, work, eye water and face water, which I understand is the best that Basic English can do with five famous words.”_5_Churchill didnt use it either. When seeking to express ourselves, we dont necessarily need fewer words; we need the right words. So its our benefit to have a large supply of words on hand. ADo we really need them all?BHow many words are there in English?COgden himself didnt actually use Basic English.DPlenty of seeming basic words did not make the list at all.EHe also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to promote it.FHe believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.GDespite attention from world leaders, Basic English never got as far as expected.答案与解析本文是说明文。文章介绍了由奥格登创造出来的一种简化英语基本英语。1A第一段讲到英语的词汇量很大且有很多同义词,第二段提到That was the thinking of a British writer及奥格登将英语词汇量减到850个可知,此处应该是问“我们确实需要那么多词汇吗”。故选A。2F奥格登之所以创造基本英语是因为他觉得这样英语更容易学。故选F。3D根据上文的 were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete及下文举的例子可知,很多基础的词汇并没有出现在基本英语中。故选D。4E由下文的 Roosevelt, who expressed mild interest可知,此处是说丘吉尔也试图说服罗斯福总统推广基本英语。故选E。5C根据下文的 Churchill didnt use it either 可知,“奥格登并没有真正使用基本英语”符合语境。故选C。.语法填空(2017湖南省益阳市高三月考)All through history, people from many different countries and cultures have lived together in Britain. The question of _10_ English will keep on changing in the future is easy to answer. It is certain that this process will continue. 答案与解析关于英语这种语言的发展和改变。1consists词组consist of无被动语态,根据句意可知用一般现在时态,故填consists。2these句意:英语是由这些到英国的人所带来的语言规则和词汇组成的。故填these。3why句意:那就是为什么英语有着这么多使人困惑的难规则。故填why。4replacing固定形式:lead to doing sth.故此处填replacing。5from固定词组:differ from不同于,故填from。6given这里name和give之间是被动关系,故填given。7approximately句意:大约第12世纪到15世纪。可知此处用副词形式,故填approximately。8contributionsmany修饰名词复数,故填contributions。9was served根据句意可知此处用一般过去时态的被动语态,故填was served。10whether句意:是否英语在未来继续改变这个问题是容易回答的。介词后面不用if引导宾语从句,故填whether。.短文改错(2017重庆一中第二次月考)When I was 10, I was asked to make a speech naming “My Dream” before the whole class! With so many eyes fixed upon me, you can imagine how nervous I was. However, I had no choice but prepare for it. To draft the speech was the easiest for me, the good writer, but the hard part lay in my oral presentation from my memory. The real moment came while I stood on the platform, my heart was beating fast and my mind blank. Much to my surprise, the listeners were sitting quietly and wait patiently without any signs of rushing me. Gradually I found me back. When I finished my speech, my audience applauded wild. I made it! From then on, my fear of talking before an audience disappears. 答案When I was 10, I was asked to make a speech “My Dream” before the whole class!
