In recent years, the English major students requirements of their English class and the demands from the work to the English major students are in continuously improvement. English teaching will directly influence the personal skills of English major students. However, the traditional English teaching methods had already fail to satisfied the English major students requirements and the social demands to the English major students. This article will analyze some problems in modern English teaching, and probe the demands of modern English major students and how to improve our English teaching method. English has been considered to be a useful major which helps to find a job easily. With the development of this major, there appears to come out some new problems. For instance, the level of English majors teaching was not as good as we expected, and nowadays, its not that easy for the English majors to find a suitable job. How can we do to change this situation and what can we do to improve our English teaching and then help English majors to find a good job? These seems to be the most important things which students should pay much more attention to. College English teaching has a direct connection with what the English majors needs and decide their future decisions in job finding. Through my investigation I found that some of the English major students always complain about their English classes and some of them even couldnt do a good job in their English classes. Due to this situation, some of the students dont want to find a job which has any much to do with English major after they graduate. However, their lack of other knowledge make them hard to find a suitable job. Therefore, this paper is going to find out the problems of English teaching and the college English majors needs, and tries to work out some constructive methods to deal with those problems.二、English teaching problems(一)、English Teaching GuidelineThe essential reason why the English major students are generally have a low ability of employment competition is that there still exists gaps between English teaching and English major students needs.English major students are different from the students of other majors, We need to cultivate the ability of using English and the strong side of our English should stand out. English, in some way, is not only about the knowledge, but more about practice, and the English expert Li Yang called it the physical work. English major nowadays seems not very professional any more. In some foreign countries, English even cannot be called a major, when our English majors go abroad to study, we need to adopt every majors. Thus, at the time we improve our English skills, we also need to heighten both the ability of communication and social activity. In the past, people learn English is because they want to talk to the foreigners in business.(冯增俊著, 135页) However, our English teaching levels nowadays shouldnt as low as many years ago. Unfortunately, our English teaching still fails to achieve this goal, but keeps our teaching instructions as the same as other majors, i.e it views language knowledge as the primary thing all the time Learning and practice are the main ways to improve our English skills, and the students attendance are especially important. However, most of the time, our teachers are just standing in front of the classroom and give the lecture so that the students seldom have opportunities to practice and thus they are very passive.Through my investigation into a university in Nanyang, I found that they also use the traditional way to teach English, and I can strongly feel that the course setting cannot satisfied the students. Moreover, the students always complain that their books are boring and there are not too much knowledge in it except a lot of grammars and vocabulary.It cannot satisfy the students desires for the knowledge of social, history, geography and culture of English countries. They only learn something which is useful for some exams, like the College English Test, or final exams in every semester. However, after all those exams, they will absolutely forget all the things they get prepared before the exams. Its a waste of time and energy.In most of the universities, students are still learning everything that the university authority require them to learn and they have no choice. Personally speaking, in order to let the students really learn English well, they need to follow the students strong points and interests to select some courses that they really want to learn. For the courses they shall choose, they should be suitable for the students. As for the exam, it should meet the different levels of different students. He or she who has a perfect skill in English should earn a perfect score. In fact, we seldom have this kind of learning modes and exam systems.After the English majors graduate from the university, its not enough that they are only perform well in the society with their perfect knowledge of English, but also the well skills of using English, especially the ability of interpersonal relationships and social activity and thats what our students and teaching system lack of.(二)、Teaching instructionsAs for our teaching instructions, they are quite different from the foreign countries. During the class periods, it seems that teachers are given a good stage to show themselves, however, the students havent too many opportunities to join in the class. We usually see the teachers lectures given in a passionate mood, while the students are going to sleep. This way of teaching hardly cultivates the excellent needed by the society and thats what we need to change in the future teaching instructions. It is said that: Teaching a second language means creating for students a part of or all a new language environment. The entire responsibility for creating the language environment falls on the teacher who is teaching a language that is not used in the community.(Dulay, H. et al.,pp 1-10)三、The employment situation for English majorsThe demands of the students majoring in English are required by the employment situation, and if we want to be clear about what they need, we need to do research on it.(一)、The situation of English majors job marketAt the beginning of the reform and opening up in China, English major students were very popular. All the cooperations were scrabbled for the English major students because they need a lot of English major students at that period, and at that special period we didnt have good facilities and abilities to cultivate our students so that we were limited in English major students. In that sense, English major students were easy to find a satisfying job.Around the year of 2000, English major students were not worried about finding a job, even the students whose achievements in colleges were not really good, and for the outstanding students, they could find a very good job. The reasons as follows: (1) English popularization was difficult during a period in China, so anyone who learned English would get a job. (2) People who can speak English can only help others to do some work as secretary, translation, guide, etc. Therefore, the work that they can do is so limited that the English majors are seldom have too many choices in their job hunting.In modern times, English major students are facing enormous challenges in job hunting. Take Beijing for example, it has about 600000 people who were learning English in 2008, and the number of that group would definitely increase in the future according to analyses. Meanwhile, the personal skill gaps between English major students and other major students are decreased step by step, and even sometimes the non-English major students perform better than the English major students in the course of English. That makes the English major students just like a taxi driver: they have a skill, but this skill cannot be viewed as a major any more. Thus its more and more difficult for English major students to find good jobs.Some of the English major students said that: We English major students all face this problem that it is hard to find a satisfying job and we are in a daze. English as a major is too narrow because we can only think about to be a teacher or a translator after we graduate from the university. If we want to cross major to find a job, we almost have no competitive power because most of the graduates nowadays have a high level of English but as for our English major students, we lack in other knowledge in other fields.”(南方都市报,第4页)Therefore, to conclude what have been said above and the situation of English major students job hunting, we can clearly see that there are a lot of limits in our English teaching instructions, and the English major students that are cultivated by such an educational system cannot satisfy the demands of this society.(二)、The reasons why job hunting is so hardLike university students of other majors, English major students also want to find a job after their four years study in the university, and many even want to be a person respected by others. But in fact, its more and more difficult for English major students to find a job, and their working road is more and more narrow. The reasons why that English major students hardly find a job have been analyzed by a website and are listed as follows:A few years ago, it was popular for people to learn English and a large groups of people were learning English so that nowadays the population of learning English surpassed the social needs.a. Most of the English major students are perhaps not really good at other subjects in the high school, especially for some subjects in science, so they have a narrow knowledge scope.b. The English level of other major students have been improved gradually and the Language advantages of English major students have disappeared little by little.c. Different profession have different demands for the workers, most of the time they are not only require the workers good at their majors, but also good at some other knowledge. So the English major students would not accomplish a job if they only concentrate on their English knowledge like grammars and then cross the major to find a job. Therefore, there have a lot of reasons that make the English major students feel hard to find a job but the main reason is that they have lost their strong points in English. That is what you can do, others can do too, however, what others can do, most probably you cannot. (三)、English major students needsWhat the English major students need is to compared with other major students, keep the superiority with those non-English major students, and reduce the distance of other areas like communication, social activities. Our English majors need to reach a situation that is my English is better than your English though you can speak English, and also I am as good at the interpersonal relationship and social activities as you.The English major students in university need to understand the culture, politics, history, geography, local language, thinking mode of all the English speaking countries in order to be like the local person in this country. If the students can get this level of English, they may have a strong competition power in our country even in foreign countries. A writer called He Qisheng said that The students need to have a solid background, wide range of knowledge, certain professional knowledge, strong ability, and a good personal quality.(何其笙,P128)At the time we learn English as our major, we also need to hold a professional skill. The professional skill should be closely connected with the students habits and strong points. In this way, based on the good quality of English, we become professional person with perfect English skills. We need to follow the rule of Integration of Language and Content Learning. It means that this kind of teaching method doesnt include the courses which have a characteristic of Chinese. At this point, we will truly increase our competition power.We cannot deny that most of the English major students have a weak ability in some science courses like math, physics and biology, etc. However, we also cannot deny that our society need not only the knowledge. First, we need a good ability of communication. You may not understand something about physics, but you have to know how to communicate with others, how to manage a group, and thats what our society needs. Second, finding a job is also not only about how much knowledge you have got, but whether you can talk to others. English major students may not be good at physical science, however, English major students may in some sense are better than the students who always stay in the library and study. English major students need to develop their EQ through their study and training so that they can have a strong ability of self-control, self-encouragement and self-support, then cultivate their insight, sensibility and the capability of controlling in everything. English major students need to be good at making friends with all kinds of people and handle all kinds of interpersonal relationship to be adjusted to the workplace.All of the activities of human-beings are trying to know this world and change it. With the development of English major in this society, our English major students are gradually turned to be like a non-major student. Our English majors need to fulfill the knowledge all the time if we want to be the winner in this world. Accordingly, our English major students need to strengthen our self-study ability constantly, and have a high level of Marxist philosophy ability in order to analyses the problems that we met or may face in the future. Then, we can make our adaptive capacity better and expand our obtain employment domain.四、Recommended solution to the gap between college English teaching and English majors needsTo ameliorate the English teaching instruction is not that easy, and if we never try to do it, we will absolutely cause a waste of the education resources and a lack of talents. At that time, it is not only the students who suffer, and also our countries and people. Therefore, my suggestions can be listed as follows:(1) What the society demand is our English majors should be cultivate in the university, but the university should change their ways of education to follow the change of the job market. Also the enrollment plan, curriculum setting, education method should also changed by the requirement of the market and society in our country.(2) Change the guiding ideology of English teaching. We need to make the knowledge adjusted to ability training, make the theory more combined with practice and always make the teachers lead the students to participate in the class.With enough time and energy to ensure the professional course learning of English and strengthen the English training accuracy. In the late 19th century, Hubei Ziqiang School spent almost 38.6% of time in English teaching every week and they also arranged some English lessons at every golden time in the morning. (苏云峰,P219) Meanwhile, universities should set up more selective courses to provide students with a wide range of choice. Thus the students can choose based on their own needs, interests, and then achieve multiple many skills while specializing in one field.Practice is particularly important to English major students. We can say that we can never really learn a foreign language besides our mother tongue only through books or in the classroom. We can divide practice into three kinds: First, practice in the classroom. The teacher raises a question, then all the students discuss, debate or make a presentation about the question. Second, practice out of the classroom. Such practice can be conducted on campus led by the teachers. All the students should be separated into different groups and t
