Eugene Gladstone ONeill He was an American playwright and Nobel laureate in Literature. His poetically titled plays were among the first to introduce into American drama techniques of realism earlier associated with Russian playwright Anton Chekhov(安东契科夫), Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen(亨利易卜生), and Swedish playwright August Strindberg.(奥古斯特斯特林堡) His plays were among the first to include speeches in American vernacular and involve characters on the fringes of society, where they struggle to maintain their hopes and aspirations, but ultimately slide into disillusionment and despair. He spend one year to get inspiration, but he got sick after that and had to recover in hospital After his experience in 191213 at a hospital , he decided to devote himself full-time to writing plays ONeill had previously been employed by the New London Telegraph, writing poetry as well as reporting. During the 1910s ONeill was a regular on the Greenwich Village literary scene, where he also befriended many radicals, most notably Communist Labor Party founder John Reed. ONeill also had a brief romantic relationship with Reeds wife, writer Louise Bryant. ONeill was portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the 1981 film Reds about the life of John Reed. As one of his classic drama Desire under the elms denotes his attempts to place plot elements and themes of Greek tragedy within the conflicts among a Puritan(清教) family members. In the general plot, there is one special character that does not appear in the stage while leading the whole tragedy of the family. She is the ghost in the play. Actually, this ghost is nobody but humans desire , that is, desire of lust, desire of money and desire of monopolization are the real murders of killing those happiness.
