Common activities include hand washing, counting of things, and checking to see if a door is locked. Some may have difficulty throwing things out. These activities occur to such a degree that the persons daily life is negatively affected. Often they take up more than an hour a day. Most adults realize that the behaviors do not make sense. The condition is associated with tics, anxiety disorder, and an increased risk of suicide.,The Introduction to OCD (feature),Both the thought and behaviors of OCD are often driven by a fear that is itself obsessive, like if you dont go to the kitchen right now you house will burn down and your child will die which makes the condition that much more distressing and self-reinforcing.,The Factors that Cause OCD,The cause is unknown, but it has been confirmed that some people are born with a genetic predisposition(精神倾向,体质) of developing OCD at some point in their life and some risk factors like a history of child abuse or other stress inducing event can initiate the onset of OCD or exacerbate(加剧,恶化) the intensity of it. Some cases have been documented to occur following infections. But at its core, OCD is caused by an abnormality in the brain that makes the mind get stuck or “hung up“ on certain thoughts.,1. Rates during a given year are about 1.2% and it occurs worldwide. It is unusual for symptoms to begin after the age of thirty-five and half of people develop problems before twenty. Males and females are affected about equally.,What Does it Feel Like to Have OCD?,Through the perspective of the patients father: We have made huge efforts to accommodate his OCD. There are sheets on every chair and table. Whats more, when a fly coming into the room and landing on the sheet, if hes sitting on the sheet, then the sheet has to be washed, he has to go up, his clothes have to go in the wash, he showers, changes, it saps the life out of me. Through the perspective of the patient with OCD : my main fear is that anything that I touch is contaminated and it will go into my body through food or drink. Basically, thats the main thing, because that cant be washed off, that cant be bleached, that cant be wiped down. I wish for an hour that they could have the brain that I have where they could just have to cope with sheer amounts of thoughts that I have.,OCDs are not necessarily perfectionist. OCDs are trying to run off the devil. OCDs are just trying to reduce the misery. OCDs are inside, manipulating rituals to make the inside okay.,Perfectionist have elements of OCD. Perfectionist compete with God. Perfectionist are trying to be good enough. Perfectionist are on the outside, looking at themselves critically, doing what they need to in order for the inside to be okay.,Perfectionist,Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder,The Distinctions Between a Perfectionist and Someone with OCD?,OCD is more about ritual and repetition than perfection. A person who suffers from OCD is unable, or nearly unable, to perform a specific physical or mental activity without going through some rituals, typically more than once. The anxiety associated with NOT carrying out this ritual is almost unbearable; and, understandably, the person wants to reduce that anxiety, which is where the obsession comes in. People who suffer from anxiety disorders and OCD is one will go to great lengths to control that anxiety. Someone who is “only“ a perfectionist will not have that direct association with gut-wrenching anxiety.,The Treatment for OCD,OCD is a very real condition. It is highly disruptive at times, especially if left untreated. But it can be controlled by: 1.Find a behavioral therapist and begin to explore what youre feeling. Reach out to your friends and family and share your struggles. 2. Invest in doing as many healthy things as possible to improve your physical, mental, and overall health and happiness. That means exercising, seeking professional help to understand your OCD, and doing things that generally make you feel like a better
