Students entered college newly. They have a strong desire to get familiar with their new environment. And this is the very first period for them to have English class at college.教学目的1.Learn/master new words and expressions, and be able to use them in actual situations2.Grasp the main idea of the text, and be able to answer the related questions3.Develop the students ability of listening and speaking教学重点1.To understand the listening material.2.Filling in an application form.教学难点How to make use of the new words and expressions of speaking更新、补充及删节内 容1.Some useful sentences of introducing oneself2.The names of each departments in our college教学方法与使用教具1.Audio-visual linguistics2.Tape-recorder3.Lecturing, reading and listening, oral practiceTeaching procedureStep One Leading-in1.Get the Ss to read the Preview part and make sure they have some ideas of what they will learn in this unit.2.T makes a self-introduction.3.T asks the Ss if they have ever introduced themselves to others and invite some Ss who are volunteers to introduce themselves.4.T asks the Ss to work in pairs on the question “What are the main points included in someones self-introduction?”. ( name, age, nationality, hometown, family, hobbies, desire )Step Two Warming-up1.Listen to the short talk in Exercise 1 twice and fill in the missing words.2.Get some Ss to read though the short talk so the Ss can check their answers. 3.Lead the students to read the passage and some useful sentences aloud in class so that they can remember them more clearly.Step Three Explanation of some important words1.Ss read the new words of exe 3 together.2.Ss read the words again after T. 3.T explains some important words, such as:by the way 顺便谈一下,顺便问一下By the way, Im Richard. Which department are you in?Step Five Listening Practice1.Ss skim through exercises5-8.2.Listen to the tape and choose the best answers.3.Check answers.4.Find out some useful expressions to introduce oneself. Step Six Consolidation ExerciseAsk Ss to make a dialogue with their partners, telling each other their names, hometown, majors, departments and so on. They can use the useful expressions they learned from exe 1 and exe 3, they can also use the sentences given in exe 4.Step Seven Homework1.Read the new words.2.Recite the words and phrases.3.Let Ss read these expressions and structures, then make dialogues in their small pairs.4.Get Ss to talk about why they want to be a college student, using the following words and expressions. The structure of the text is easy. Maybe some Ss feel easier about the words, but some of them may feel more difficult. ( first of all secondly finally)Step Two Lead in1.Ask Ss “ Why do they want to enter college or university to study?”.2.T explains the two words “college” and “university”.Colleges and UniversitiesUniversities and colleges are schools that continue a persons education beyond high school. A university or college education helps men and women enjoy richer, more meaningful lives. It prepares many people for professional careers as doctors, engineers, lawyers, or teachers. It also gives a person a better appreciation of such fields as art, literature, history, human relations, and science. In doing so, a university or college education enables individuals to participate with greater understanding in community affairs. Universities differ from colleges in that they are larger, have wider curricula, are involved in research activities, and grant graduate and professional as well as undergraduate degrees. ( From the 1998 World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia, ) Students who decide to attend college must choose the school that most nearly fits their needs, finances, and personal likes. They can discover many of the facts by talking to friends and teachers. And the teacher should provide some key words.A. Meaning: What kind of things did the writer worry about when he first entered college ? 2.I was afraid of being off by myself, away from my family for the first time. Meaning: I did not feel well when I left my family and be alone with myself at college for the first time. be off: leave 离开 by oneself: alone 单独,独自3.I set up a routine that was really my owna routine met my needs. Meaning: I made up my mind to do several regular things and they really meet my needs. 4.I would have to make friends with them and perhaps also compete with them for grades in courses I would take. Meaning: They will become my friends as well as my competitors in studies. Make friends with :become friendly with sb 与某人交朋友5.Could I keep up with them? Meaning: Can I be as good as they are?6 be up to: be left to s.b. to decide e.g. it is up to our group leader to make the final decision.7.time I spent: = time that /which I spent8.spend time doing use time doing a particular thing e.g. Mary spends all her free time writing one book after another.9.have sth.
