A.TrueB.FalseKey: BListen to the news and fill in the blanks.Earthquakes shake Japan and its millions of people on a routine basis. So its no wonder the effort to design and build earthquake-proof buildings never stops. Here is Barry Peterson in Tokyo. Earthquakes, they come without warnings and kill without mercy, which is why the Japanese constantly drill. They even have rooms like this one where they can learn what a really strong from earthquake is gonna feel like. But designers here hope that modern high rises can stand up to the worst nature has to offer. Maybe. But warn some scientists, maybe not. Most earthquakes are sharp and short over in a matter of seconds. In that case, says professor Noble Fukuwa, a tall building would be fine. But parts of Japan where the soil is softer may suffer whats called a long wave seismic event. It can make the earthquake last longer, says the professor Fukuwa. And then this is what can happen as the oscillation gets worse. The first concern is that the swaying high-rises could smash into each other. But even if the buildings survive, people inside may not. This chair is a simulator that shows the sway on the 10th floor as the building rocks. Now look whats happening on the 50th floor. People and furniture and pretty much everything else would go crashing around like ingredients in a kitchen mixer. More than a decade ago, an earthquake in Kobe killed more than 6,000. In that case, the older buildings collapsed and the new ones survived. The Japanese remember that day, knowing for a while there will be more earthquakes. But they dont know and wont know once what happens is can the highest skyscrapers in their biggest cities survive.
