There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater. The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but youre also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the worlds oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely Outback was dazzled. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled 4) far from home . But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back swooning over Gregory Peck,” she recalled. In February 2000, the couple owners of Kazro Design, an interior-design company paid 850,000 Australian dollars (US$840,000) for a piece of land on Millionaires Row, along Broadbeach Waters on Australias famous Gold Coast. With the Nerang River to the north, and Surfers Paradise beach nearby, plus the green space of Albert Park to the south, they said it seemed like an ideal spot. The Cartwrights razed the existing house on the property, but kept the 25-meter salt-water pool, installed in the 1960s. Empty of water while the house was on the market, the pool thanks to its deep- bowl shape had become a Mecca for local skateboarders, who were able to access it easily because there was no fence. We were told that it was the best skateboarding bowl in the Southern hemisphere, said Mrs. Cartwright.,3. Reading in Depth,A Gold Coast Party Pad,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 12,Sadly for the skateboarders, the Cartwrights had the pool fenced during the three-year construction of their new home, because the couple was not insured for liability. Toward the end of construction, however, Mr. Cartwright invited Australias skateboarding community for one last hurrah. The empty-pool party grew into an event with a sponsor (Billabong International, the Australian-based clothing company), and among the skateboard aficionados who accepted the invitation was the American superstar Tony Hawk. In 2003, the Cartwrights moved into their new home, which is designed with European decorative touches. Behind a double set of ornate gates, the driveway leads to a three-car garage and a formal entrance with a glass floor that looks down onto a natural stream that cuts through the house. The sweeping staircase in the main hall is flanked by high ceilings, decorative cornices and large windows that look out on the river, pool and gardens. The residence has four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, dressing room and balcony; a guest suite also includes a kitchenette. An open-plan living and dining area lie off the main foyer; theres a media lounge on the other side of the house. The home also has a study with its own entry and custom-designed cabinets. With a year-round temperature of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius through the Gold Coast, the house does wonders to maximize outdoor living, said Ms. Cartwright. Mr. Cartwright landscaped the gardens with red bougainvillea and coconut palms along the waterfront.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 13,The kitchen is finished with granite countertops and lacquered-wood cabinets; a sandstone tile covers the floors. The property includes two thatched-roof Bali pavilions. The smaller pavilion, by the pool, has a glass floor that sits over a fish pond. Late last year, the Cartwrights moved into another house farther down the Gold Coast; its elevator provides better wheelchair access for Mr. Cartwrights father, who lives with the couple. What I miss most is sitting out there with a glass of champagne listening to the music and watching the superb night sky of Surfers Paradise, said Mr. Cartwright. They put the house on the market for A$5.5 million. Michael Kollosche of the real-estate firm Ray White Group, which is not affiliated with the listing of the property, said that the homes asking price is in line with the market. Two homes of similar size on the same street sold recently for A$9 million and A$6.5 million.,参考译文,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 14,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 15,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 16,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 17,Direction: Fill in the following blanks with proper words or phrases given. Ive been here times, and yet I confess that I spend 1 much of my time in Malta hopelessly lost, an embarrassing admission considering the island is only about 2 17 miles at its longest point, nine at the widest. But, I am not alone in my directional dyslexia. Nearly all independent travelers to Malta spend part of the time wondering where 3 they are, a source of mirth for the locals. A Canadian friend who worked here discovered an office tradition of placing bets on how late newcomers would arrive on their first day at work. The Maltese are used to 4 strange visitors invading their homeland. Almost every nation with interests in the Mediterranean, from the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC to the British in the 20th century, has claimed Malta as its own. It has one of the worlds great natural harbors and a location in the middle of 5 the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and Tunisia. Some of the greatest figures of history - St. Paul, Napoleon, Count Roger the Norman-have set foot on Maltas rocky shores. All have left their mark on the islands landscape, and as a result 6 , Malta is a living, breathing museum, a place where all of Mediterranean history, thousands of years worth, can be seen and touched and smelled. The Maltese are fond of 7 using the language of food to describe themselves. They will say their culture is, like their food, a mixture of all thats around them. They will tell you their personality is like Maltese bread: crusty on the outside, soft on the inside. One of the wonders of Malta is that 8 you can cover several thousand years in just a few days. I planned to travel by public bus. I sat back to enjoy the ride to the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. As we made our way through 9 little towns I could see into storefronts where bakers, bankers, and cobblers worked their trade as they had for centuries. I watched children in their smart uniforms 10 playing in the schoolyards, the priest greeting his parishioners, women lining up to buy bread, and men in the cafes arguing loudly, probably over politics.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 18,The owners intend to raze the hotel and erect an office building on the site.,Three space walks were planned for this week to install new equipment.,A seed can grow into a tree, and trees make up beautiful forests.,Lets cut through the woods and get ahead of them.,The following Websites have appeared on the WWW claiming to be affiliated with Moscow University.,参考答案,参考答案,参考答案,参考答案,参考答案,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 19,My Tour To Shanghai I like touring big cities very much, so does my brother. Once, I took a trip to Shanghai with my brother during the summer vacation. It took us more than three hours to fly to Shanghai from Fuzhou. We stayed in a large hotel called Changhong International Hotel. The first day, we just stayed in the hotel and rested. The second day, we decided to visit Nanjing Road, which is the busiest street in Shanghai. When we got there, we found it packed like sardines. We began to visit one store to another. I bought one T-shirt and two pairs of leather shoes for the coming term. My brother, on the other hand, bought some nice food and a pair of sunglasses. the next day, my mother took me to Jinjiang Entertainment Centre, where I played many kinds of games and had a good time. For the rest, I paid a visit to some other interesting places, such as the Oriental Bright Pearl TV Tower, the Huangpu River and Shanghai International Conference Centre. I felt very pleased during my tour to Shanghai, and wish someday I could catch a chance to work there.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 20,4. Skimming & Scanning,Chinese Tourists Put New York On Map,A surge of Chinese tourists is expected to visit New York City this year, prompting hoteliers and tour operators to better cater to the group by offering pleasures from tea kettles in rooms to translated welcome packets. NYC & Company, the citys marketing and tourism organization, expects a 20% increase in visitors from China this year compared with a weak 2009 when the recession cut business travel - the major impetus for Chinese travel to New York. If the estimate holds up, 223,000 tourists from China will come to New York this year, topping the 2008 record by a small margin. Nationwide, the U.S. Commerce Department predicts a 22% increase in travelers from China in 2010. Through February 2010, 141,071 tourists from China and Hong Kong have visited the U.S., ranking it ninth among arrivals with an 86% increase over last year. Tourism experts say New York is usually on the agenda for Chinese visitors to the U.S. Some city hotels have experience in catering to the Chinese. The Mandarin Oriental has long-offered a traditional breakfast of rice congee, soy-poached chicken, steamed pork bun and a boiled egg. But now it is developing Chinese language cards and letters to welcome guests and explain local attractions.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 21,An in-house translator and free tea kettles and tea in-room for Chinese guests are also in the works. The New York Marriott Marquis also serves a traditional Chinese breakfast in its Encore Restaurant and has Chinese speakers on staff. At the Waldorf Astoria, Stanley Wong, a Cantonese-speaking senior manager, says more Chinese tourists will be a boost for retail across the region. His affluent clients like shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and often request a trip to the Woodbury Common outlet in Central Valley, N.Y. Sometimes they dont speak any English but they know Woodbury Common, he said. (A spokeswoman for the Premium Outlets Division of Simon Property Group said that Woodbury Common is the largest destination for Chinese visitors of its 42 shopping centers in the U.S.) On a recent afternoon in Times Square, tourists from China took photos in front of Broadway banners. Yumin He, a 56-year-old teacher from Beijing, made his first trip to the U.S. this month for a wedding. He and his wife traveled across the country with a daughter who lives in San Diego and had been in New York for a week. People were really optimistic, the food is good, the environment is great and the air quality is great, Mr. He said. The family also visited Philadelphia, Boston and Niagara Falls.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 22,参考译文,Though the majority of travel from China to New York continues to be business-related, the leisure sector is growing, largely because of an agreement signed two years ago that made it possible for groups to travel from China to the U.S. Chinas growing middle class also accounts for an increase in leisure travel. Todays Chinese tourism market is similar to where the Japanese market was 10 years ago, said Richie Karaburun, president of GTA Americas Inbound, a tour wholesaler based in New York with offices in Shanghai and Beijing. Within seven to 10 years, if we play our cards right, China will be one of the biggest markets inbound to the U.S., he said. The company has seen a triple-digit increase in bookings from China over last year. Most of the standard tourist attractions in Manhattan are popular with visiting Chinese. But tour operators also say one lesser-known site very important to Chinese visitors is the Charging Bull sculpture in Bowling Green Park. Says Mr. Karaburun: Many Chinese think if they touch the bull, they will have good luck on the stock market.,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 23,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 24,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 25,2019年4月6日星期六,Page 26,A surge of Chinese tourists is expected to visit New York City this year, prompting hoteliers and tour operators to better cater to the group by offering pleasures from tea kettles in rooms to translated welcome packets. 2) If the estimate holds up, 223,000 tourists from China will come to New York this year, topping the 2008 record by a small margin. 3) The New York Marriott Marquis also serves a traditional Chinese breakfast in its Encore Restaurant and has Chinese speakers on staff. 4) Though the majority of travel from China to New York continues to be business-related, the leisure sector is growing, largely because of an agreement signed two years ago that made it possible for groups to travel from China to the U.S. 5) Most of the standard tourist attractions in Manhattan are popular with visiting Chinese.
