The Shadow-Line (1917) is considered as Conrads last masterpiece. In many ways an autobiographical narrative, this novella is based on Conrads personal experience of his first command of the ship Otago away from Bangkok in 1888. This sea story opens with a depiction of the inexperienced captain-narrators supreme efforts to navigate his disabling ship through the shadow-line, where the former captain is buried. Written just after the outbreak of the First World War, this novella is dedicated to his son, who was fighting at the Western Front, and also to all the other young men who were passing the shadow-line on the battlefield and pursuing the qualities needed to confront the overwhelming evil and destruction. In this work, Conrads elaborate applications of modernist techniques and relentless exploration into the dark chasm of psychology have earned him a reputation as the precursor of modernist literature. This thesis focuses on the modernist techniques applied in The Shadow-Line. By providing an analysis of the modernist theme, modernist symbolism and modernist narration, this paper aims to reveal the modernist characteristics in terms of peoples inevitable sense of alienation not only from the rest of the society but also from themselves. It also illuminates Conrads supreme effort to revitalize humanistic values amidst the existential decadence of modern life.论文体系、结构/ Thesis organization and structure:This paper falls into five chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the significance of writing the paper, the thesis statement and the general organization of the paper.
