Math 2330 Discrete Structures Spring 08Instructor: Dr. Kazem Mahdavi, professor of Mathematics Office: RBN 4013Office Hours: MWF 9:00-9:50am, or by appointmentTelephone Number: 903-566-7277Email: Class Meeting Time: 10:00-10:50 MWF Room: RBN 2012 Required Texts: Discrete Mathematical Structures 5th Edition, Bernard Kolman, Robert Busby and Sharon Ross, Pearson Prentice Hall 2004, ISBN # 0-13-045797-3Prerequisites: Math 1325 or Math 2413 (Calculus for Business, or Calculus)Course Description: Study of mathematical logic, sets, combinations, relations, functions, graphs and trees, Boolean algebra, and growth functionLearning Outcomes: By the end of course students should demonstrate Understanding, working skill, and use of logical operations, propositions, conditional statements, methods of proof, and mathematical induction Understanding, working skill, and use of sets, and operations on sets Understanding, working skill, and use of sequences and operations on sequences Understanding, working skill, and use of matrices, and operation on matrices Understanding, working skill, and use of permutations, combinations, and elementary probability Understanding, working skill, and use of relations, properties of relations, equivalence relations, and operations on relations Understanding, working skill, and use of functions, growth Functions Boolean algebras, and functions on Boolean algebras Understanding, working skill, and use of graphs, paths in the graphs, Euler/Hamiltonian paths, and circuits in the graphs Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory and attendance records will be kept. Notify the professor in advance if you must miss a class, be late for a class or leave early.(Official University Policy: Class attendance is the responsibility of the student. When a student has a legitimate absence, the instructor may permit the student to complete missed assignments. In many cases class participation is a significant measure of performance, and non-attendance may adversely affect a students grade. When a students absences become excessive, the instructor may recommend that the student initiate a withdrawal.)Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly and students are expected to present homework problems in class on a regular basis. This will count towards %25 of the grade. Homework assignments may be discussed with other students: in fact, you may find a regular study-buddy or study-group helpful. In-class assignments and participation: In-class assignments will be given regularly. Participation will be graded based on taking part in classroom discussions and asking questions. Additionally, students are expected to present homework problems in class on a regular basis. These areas will count toward 15% of your grade. Testsand Final Exams: There will be two tests and a final exam . These exams will test your knowledge of the theory and application of discrete math. The dates and times of these exams are as follows: Test 1: Friday, Feb. 29 Test 2: Friday, April 18 Final Exam: Wed, May 7, 10:15am -12:15pmEvaluation: Test 1, 20% Test 2, 20% Final 20% Homework and Presentation 25% Class Participation 15%Make-ups: Make-ups for documented absences that are required as part of a UT Tyler obligation (e.g. athletes participating in an event, participating in a debate contest, etc.) or for religious observation will be granted. For all make-ups of this type, prior notification of at least one week and documentation are required. Other make-ups are granted only in extreme cases and at the sole discretion of the instructor.Calculator Policy: No calculators will be allowed on tests.Cell phones, IPODs and other electronic devices: Please set your cell phones and pagers to silent mode. If you are expecting an emergency call, please notify the professor in advance, sit near the door, and answer the phone outside.
