Conclusion.18Bibliography.19 Acknowledgment.21摘 要 随着现代信息技术的持续发展和多媒体的广泛应用,英语电影已经成为英语教学必不可少的一个重要工具。本文介绍了英语电影的特点和国内外目前研究现状及所存在的问题,分析总结了其在英语学习过程中的巨大促进作用。从师生两个角度来对如何更好的应用英语电影加以阐述,旨在帮助学习英语的学生通过体会电影形象生动的语言环境激发他们学习英语的积极性从而帮助他们去主动获取丰富的语言知识跟掌握良好的交际方法以提高他们的整体英语水平。关键词:英语电影;特点;作用;应用AbstractWith the continuing development of modern information technology and the wide use of multimedia, English movies have become an important tool in the process of teaching English. This thesis introduces the features of English movies, the current research situations and the existing problems at home and abroad. Besides, it mainly analyzes the promoting effect of them in the process of learning English and explains how to better apply English movies from teachers and students perspective, and in order to stimulate students learning desire and interest to obtain rich language knowledge and grasp good communication methods actively to improve their overall English levels through experiencing the vivid environment of movies. Keywords: English movies; features; functions; applications1. Introduction1.1Features of English Movies English movies have clear and standard pronunciations. Firstly, we must admit that any one of English movies his original purpose is not used for language teaching, so his languages have great arbitrariness. Sometimes some kinds of accents will be mixed in movies because of contents requirements. However, the main roles pronunciations are clear and standard. In the process of watching English movies, students can experience the authentic English pronunciations, they correct their pronunciation mistakes by imitating main roles pronunciations and intonations. This helps to improve their oral English levels. Movies languages are rich and easy to understand. Movies are the transmissions of civilization and reflect the culture and social life of one country(高翼, 2008: 43). Movies languages are rich and contagious and lots of words and sentences in movies close to the students life that we can often hear everyday. In addition, most of contents of movies are healthy and have positive significance to students. Students edify their sentiments and form correct values gradually at the same time. Compared with English textbooks, English movies combine images, words, sounds and other various audio-visual information together to create a vivid learning environment for students, giving students the true feelings(王雪松, 2008: 26). This can stimulate students enthusiasm of learning English and improve their learning efficiency easier. At the same time, movies also provide rich materials and wide development space for teachers to teach languages.1.2Purposes and Significance of the Study With the updating of teaching equipment and continuous improvement of teaching methods, English movies have become an important tool of teaching English and played great roles in the process of learning English. However, people are not fully aware of the values of English movies and English movies have not been widely applied in teaching so far. The study mainly analyzes the promoting role of English movies in the process of learning English, explains how to better apply English movies from teachers and students perspective and puts forward relevant proposals. It aims to help people recognize the values and significance of English movies and to learn English well. The significance of English movies are used in teaching specifically lies in the following three points: Firstly, compared with English textbooks, English movies combine images, words, sounds and other various audio-visual information together to create a vivid learning environment for students, giving students the true feelings(王雪松, 2008: 26). It can improve students listening and speaking abilities efficiently. The famous linguist Chomsky once pointed out that “people are born with the ability to acquire languages, but students often lack the good environment in the process of learning English(吴洁, 2003: 45).” So students listening and speaking abilities are often poor. English movies just to make up the deficiency, it create a real language environment, giving students the true feelings. Besides, they also provide a large number of authentic languages input for students and provide a platform for students to practice their listening and speaking abilities so as to relieve the phenomenon that students listening and speaking abilities are poor and improve their English listening and speaking abilities efficiently. Secondly, Compared with teaching materials, English movies are more easy to arouse the interest and initiations of students to enable students to acquire English language knowledge and master English language skills better to improve their efficiency of learning English in a good atmosphere. After watching English movies, Students discuss English movies characters, plots and contents through the form of cooperative inquiry to construct English language knowledge actively, it helps to perfect the process of English learning. Finally, they enhance students background knowledge of English culture and promote students understanding of western countries culture so as to improve their cross-cultural communication ability efficiently. Movies are the transmissions of civilization, they display differences between the way of thinking in the west and China through stories narration, plots development, interleaved character emotions(李晓燕, 2008: 56). Students can also promote their understanding of western countries culture and cultivate English language thinking ability through some activities such as understanding characters and imitating classic dialogues in English movies.2. Analyses on Current Research Situations at Home and Abroad2.1Analyses on Current Research Situation at Abroad Abroad movies are applied in language teaching begins in the early twentieth Century. In 1970s, the movie teaching has been widely used in universities. Movies are widely used in aesthetic education, moral education, culture communication and literature teaching etc in recent 20 years, Foreign scholars have seen their huge promoting functions in the process of learning English, but they have different opinions on how to use English movies in the classroom and their opinions mainly divided into the following two parts: Someone advocate using movies clips to teach languages (Carr&Duncan, 1987: 32). Firstly, they think that movie clips are the epitome of the social life and have important education value. A series of teaching activities based on movies are conducive to the development of students various language skills. Whats more, they contend that watching whole movies is a waste of time. Teachers should select one to two classic clips according to their teaching contents to let students appreciate, this is better than watching whole movies without purposes. The others advocate using whole movies to teach languages. They advocate that we should watch whole movies in the process of teaching English so as to students can have a comprehensive grasp of movies, then we can watch classic clips which as resources to design effective English teaching activities to improve the learning efficiency. If teachers only let students enjoy fragments of movies, students are not understand movies and they enjoy movies with blind giant, and this is just wasting time.2.2Analyses on Current Research Situation at Home2.2.1The Problems Are Discussed of Domestic ResearchesCompared with abroad researches, domestic researches start are relatively late but develop rapidly, the relevant study mainly focus on the following questions:Advantages of English movies in the process of teaching English. The advantages of English movies in the process of teaching English are mainly reflected in improving students listening and speaking abilities and enhance students understanding of western culture these two aspects: Compared with English textbooks, English movies combine images, sounds, texts and other audio-visual information together to create a vivid language environment, giving students the true feelings(王雪松, 2008: 26),this can stimulate students interest easier. They also provide a large number of authentic languages input for students, this helps to expand contents of English language learning so as to improve students listening and speaking abilities effectively. Language is the carrier of culture, English movies are mediums of spreading western culture. Through appreciating English movies, students can intuitively understand the Western cultural life and experience culture differences between the East and West so as to enhance cross-cultural awareness and improve the cross-cultural communication ability. Relevant aspects should be considered in the process of selecting English movies. The movies which are selected should be positive, healthy, educational for students(陶林燕, 2008: 36). Through watching healthy upward inspirational movies, students will be infected by excellent qualities which shown by protagonists and they have set good examples for students. Students follow their examples to improve their ideological and moral levels constantly so as to form correct world outlooks, life outlooks, and values. Secondly, we should take students as center when we select movies, taking students age characteristics and their English language learning levels as standards of selecting movies (马焕丽, 2008: 32). English movies language difficulty can not exceed the acceptance abilities and knowledge levels of students. As for low grade students, their English language bases are relatively weak, they should watch movies that are easy to understand, speed is relatively slow and have less movies terminologies. For high grade students, their English language bases have upgraded a higher level, they can choose movies that have a certain depth of contents.2.2.2Domestic Researches DeficienciesIn China, English movies are applied in English teaching has received people a certain degree of concern and has made some phrased achievements, but there are some deficiencies that are mainly in the following two aspects:Firstly, researches contents are one-sided, most of domestic researches apply English movies in English listening and speaking areas and rarely involve reading and writing areas. Whats more, domestic researches mainly focus on the advantages of English movies which are used for teaching but rarely involve in some problems such as how to better apply movies in teaching. Secondly, researches stages are narrow and are mainly concentrated in universities and study in middle schools stage is relatively less. Junior middle school students are in the golden period of life, their language imitation abilities are relatively strong. In addition, junior high school textbooks are based on characters dialogues and combine English films teaching more tightly. We use movies for teaching in junior high schools will makes students language ability develops more perfect. 3. Functions of English Movies3.1Enriching Students Linguistic and Cultural Knowledge Learning a foreign language, we not only need to grasp the grammar knowledge, language skills skillfully. More importantly, we need to learn the cultural background of the language. Movies are the transmissions of civilization. they display differences between the way of thinking in the east and west through stories” narration, plots development, and interleaved character emotions(李晓燕, 2008: 56). Through appreciating English movies, students understand western social historical events, cultural background, social reality, and habits of thinking of the mass in the west. Besides, students can really realize the ingenious combination between structure functions and pragmatic functions of languages so as to enhance cross-cultural awareness and improve their cross-cultural communication ability.Take “The Joy Luck Club” as an example, this paper shows us the differences between eastern culture and Western culture vividly through the description of four mothers and their daughters conflicts in education values, love values, marriage values and other aspects. This helps us enhance our understanding of the Western culture and reduce the cultural contradictions when we communicate with western people. In addition, it promotes the communication between eastern culture and Western culture and enhance our intercultural communicative competences.3.2Creating a Real Language Environment for Students Movies come from life, they are the true reflections and the exaggerated demonstrations of the reality life, they can create vivid contexts, giving students the true feelings. Besides, they provide students with a large number of listening materials and students can correct their pronunciation mistakes by imitating main roles pronunciations and intonations. This helps to improve their listening levels. At the same time, words, sentence patterns, and culture these listening difficulties can be practiced and resolved gradually in the process of watching movies .Some old movies, such as “Sound of Music” and “Roman Holiday” , the dramatists have slow speed and clear pronunciations. In addition, there are lots of classic dialogues in these movies and they are good works for students practicing listening.3.3Establishing the Stage for Students to Practice Spoken English Through appreciating English movies, students enhance their understanding of western countries culture customs and practice listening. However, the functions of English movies in English teaching are more than these. A large number of classic dialogues in movies provide students with a large number of oral imitation paradigms, creating good conditions for students to practice spoken English. After watching movies, students are immersed in the stories. We can let students retell movies plots or allow students to make comments on their different understanding on Chinese and Western culture. At the same time, we can also let students follow movie clips to carry out video dubbing. For example, after students seeing the film “Sound of Music”, they can carry out discussions on their most impressive scenes spontaneously. In the course of discussions, they express their ideas actively and unconsciously so as to improve their oral expression abilities effectively.
