It is said that elephants can get drunk by eating the fermented (发酵) fruit rotting on the ground. Books have even been written to prove the truth of the phenomenon. But a study published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology tells a very different story.Steve Morris, a biologist at the University of Bristol in England and an author of the study, says there is nothing in the biology of either the African elephant or the marula fruit to support the stories. Morris says, “People just want to believe in drunken elephants.”The marula tree, a member of the same family as the mango, grows widely in Africa. Its sweet, yellow fruit is used for making jam, wine and beer. “The first mistake of the drunkenelephant theory is that its unlikely that an elephant would eat the fruit if it were rotten,” Morris says. “Elephants eat the fruit right off the tree, not when its rotten on the ground,” he explains. Other experts add that if an elephant were to eat the fruit on the ground, it wouldnt wait for the fruit to ferment. Michelle Gadd, an African wildlife specialist, says that elephants and many other animals, including birds and monkeys, are too fond of marula fruit to let it rot. If fermented fruit on the ground is out of the question, so is the notion that the fruit could ferment in the stomach of elephants, according to the study authors. Food takes between 12 and 46 hours to pass through an elephants digestive system, the authors point out, which is not enough for the fruit to ferment. Supposing that this happened, its still highly improbable that the food would produce enough alcohol to make an elephant drunk. Through calculations of body weight, elephant digestion rates, and other factors, the authors conclude that it would take about 1.9 litres of ethanol(乙醇) to make an elephant drunk. 56We can learn from the passage that _.Ait is not easy to find marula fruit in the wild in AfricaBAfrican elephants dont like to eat marula fruit at all Cmarula fruit can be made into food or drink consumed by people Dbirds and monkeys in Africa like to eat rotten marula fruit 答案:C细节理解题。由第四段第二句话“Its sweet, yellow fruit is used for making jam, wine and beer.” 57According to Paragraph 6, marula fruit is likely to ferment _.Ain about 12 hours Bin about 34 hours Cbetween 12 and 46 hours Din more than 46 hours 答案:D细节理解题。由第六段最后一句话“Food takes between 12 and 46 hours to pass through an elephants digestive system, the authors point out, which is not enough for the fruit to ferment.” 58According to Mr. Morris, which of the following is TRUE?AElephants just eat the fruit right off the tree.BElephants will not eat the fruit which is rotten.CThe marula tree and the mango belong to different families.DThere are several connections between elephants and the marula fruit. 由第四段最后两句话“The first mistake of the drunkenelephant theory is that its unlikely that an elephant would eat the fruit if it were rotten.Elephants eat the fruit right off the tree, not when its rotten on the ground.” 59What does the underlined word “this” in the last Paragraph probably refer to?AElephants getting drunk.BMarula fruit fermenting in elephants stomachs.CElephants eating rotten marula fruit. DElephants eating marula trees directly. B(2013郑州市一模)Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I dont understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?”The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, “Youll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. Out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead. The grandpa said, “I dont want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. Youre just not trying hard enough.”The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, “Grandpa, its useless!”“So, you think it is useless?” the grandpa said, “Look at the basket.”The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean.“Grandson, thats what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, youll be changed, inside and out.” 60What puzzled the grandson most was _.Awhether it was useful to read booksBwhy he forgot what he read soonCwhat kind of book he could understandDhow he could read books like his grandpa答案:A细节理解题。由第二段,特别是最后一句话“What good does reading the book do?” 61Why did Grandpa ask his grandson to fetch a basket of water?ATo train him to run faster.BTo clean the dirty basket in the river.CTo punish him for not reading carefully.DTo get him to realize the use of reading books. 62What lesson can we learn from the story?AThe old are always wiser than the young.BIt is foolish to carry water with a basket.CReading books can change a person gradually.DYou cant expect to remember whatever you read. C(2013遵义四中月考)Even plants can run a fever, especially when theyre under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet awaystraight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that dont have pest problems.Even better, Paleys Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a colourcoded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spotspray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paleys company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and longterm backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States,” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago. 63Plants will send out an increased amount of heat when they are _.Afacing an infrared scanner Bsprayed with pesticidesCin poor physical condition Dexposed to excessive sun rays答案:C考查细节理解题。根据第二段第二句:. an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted, crops. The data were transformed into a colourcoded map showing where plants were running “fevers”受到病虫害侵扰的时候,植物会发“高烧”,也就是说植物的“身体状况”不佳时,就会发烧。64In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to _.Aestimate the damage to the cropsBdraw a colourcoded mapCmeasure the size of the affected areaDlocate the problem area答案:D考查推理判断题。根据第二段最后两句:. showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spotspray,.,用红外线的目的就是确定有问题的区域,以便农民有针对性的喷洒杀虫剂。65Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by _.Aresorting to spotspraying Btransforming poisoned rainCconsulting infrared scanning experts Ddetecting crop problems at an early stage答案:A考查细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“Farmers cold then spotspray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.” 66The application of infrared scanning t
