The department will offer quality academic programs, assuring the learning of current disciplinary knowledge, written and oral communication, quantitative and computer skills, and information literacy and use. Learning will be achieved using a combination of lectures, active learning experiences, and applied learning experiences.2. The department will recruit, admit, advise, and teach the students most likely to succeed in its programs. It will facilitate student placement and alumni relationships through its advising and career center.3. The department will maintain a faculty compliment sufficient to provide stability and continuous improvement for high quality instructional programs. 4. The department will support and develop its faculty members as they pursue excellence in teaching, professional development, and service. The department will facilitate faculty expertise by focusing teaching efforts, by promoting instructional, applied, and discipline-based research, and by facilitating service assignments that effectively utilize faculty knowledge.5. The department will use strategic planning and continuous improvement processes to assure currency and quality as it meets the needs of its students and the northwest Missouri regional community. Integration of Department and Institution GoalsWestern Strategic Plan Goals Academic Affairs and Enrollment Managemento Goal Two: Develop a diverse mix of students with academic potential for completing high-quality programs.- Redefined staff positions to create a Director of Advising and Recruitment position- Developed the Western Business Advising and Career Center- Streamlined the Business advising plan- Began development of a Western Business Recruitment Plan- Conducted meetings with Admissions, Financial Aid, Housing, & Student Success to determine needs and resources- Implemented VIP day participation - Expanded applied learning courses, in part, to attract students- Conducted research to determine why existing students selected Western Businesso Goal Three: Strengthen existing and develop new academic programs, taking into consideration the educational and career needs of students and the economic, social, and cultural needs of the community.- Progress toward AACSB International accreditation- Added requirements for Business Ethics, Production & Operations Management, and Microcomputer Applications- Continued to implement the Pre-major in Business and a single major-minor form- Increased admissions requirements- Developed GPA maintenance standards and an academic intervention plan that will by implemented with the new computer-based records system.- Implementing Banner-based prerequisite checking- Developed the learning goals for our Assurance of Learning program - Developed assessment processes for Learning Goals in written communication, oral communication, and information literacy- Maintained course and degree profiles to insure and communicate content coverage- Met with the Student Advisory Board to get input on students perceptions of academic and career needs- Met with the Business Advisory Board to get input on business leaders perceptions of future economic and social needso Goal Four: Strengthen the retention, graduation and placement outcomes of students.- Worked through the Majors and Grads Committee to study retention, graduation and placement- Developed baseline data on exit exam scores- Reviewed content of courses relative to the ETS major field test in business- Began administering the business exit exam in a course Experiential Learning and Student Development o Goal One: Provide students, by graduation, the opportunity to blend academic knowledge and applications in and beyond the classroom.- Provided applied learning coursework for 100% of majors- Expanded the Workplace Research course- Implemented annual student travel/study courses o Goal Two: Provide additional opportunities for students to participate in international and/or multicultural experiences.- Took students to Poland and planned for a 2006 study/travel trip to Turkey.- Raised money for study/travel scholarshipso Goal Three: Recognize and expand experiential learning activities in coursework. - Implementation of an applied learning coursework requirement for all business majors- Reviewed existing applied learning courses- Expanded GBA 481 Workplace Research - Began discussions of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) as an experiential/service learning course Facilities and Groundso Goal Four: Address ways in which facilities and grounds may enhance teaching and learning- Enhanced hallway furnishings and seating capacity- Developed a plan for a third floor student lounge- Constructed a Business advising and placement center- Renovated Business Department offices (paint and carpet) Community Service, Community Partnerships, and Workforce Developmento Goal Three: Increase the participation of Western students, faculty and staff in community service activities.- Participation in service activities by Alpha Kappa Psi- Use of materials on service activities and the perception of leadership for use in Introduction to Business resume section- Began discussions of sophomore level experiential/service learning course(s) Workforce Developmento Goal Two: Participate in workforce development for the region- Met with a Business Advisory Board to help insure the link between professional coursework in business and community workforce needs- Redesigned Business Internships to allow more faculty participation Budgetingo Goal Four: Coordinate institutional goals and activities to extend and expand our success within the Western family- Expanded our relationship with Alumni Services to promote more data gathering and relationship building with junior and senior students- Participated in Western Institute activitiesDepartment Points of Pride- 9 journal publications by faculty- 2 conference proceedings publications by faculty- 10 journal articles reviewed by faculty- 8 conference papers presented by faculty- 4 panel presentations by faculty at professional conferences- 13 professional conferences attended by faculty- 3 faculty are professional journal reviewers- 4 faculty are professional organization officers- 4 professional conference presentations by students- 9 students attended professional conferences - 18 professional conferences attended by faculty- 27 student awards received amounting to $16,100Department Strengths- Dedicated faculty- Dramatically improved faculty professional development- Excellent office support- Advising and Career Center- Strengthened and more flexible academic programs- Progress toward AACSB International accreditation- Assurance of Learning processes under development- Applied learning formats in place and working successfully- Reduced number of preparations per faculty per year- Strengthening of quantitative, international, and ethics content in courses- Increased research fundingDepartment Concerns -
