The Beauty of Britain,1. What is the possible nationality of the author? The author may be British.,Called by some “the last sage” of English literature, J. B. Priestley (1894-1984) had a career which spanned more than 60 years and included authoring novels, essays, plays, and screenplays.,Before reading the text closely, scan to find the answers to the following 5 questions.,2. In what tone does the author describe the sceneries of Britain? Approving. 3. What are the characteristics of the sceneries of Britain? Superb variety and exquisite moderation. 4. What kind of feelings does this variety produce to people? The variety is astonishing and full of happy surprise to people. 5. What does the author mean by “exquisite moderation”? A compromise between wildness and tameness, between Nature and Man.,Para. 1 The beauty of our country or at least all of its south of _ is as hard to define as it is easy to enjoy. North Scotland,The North of Scottland is the Highlands, a montainious region. The land is a succession of moutains, some higher than a thousand meters. It is the second largest of the fourteen National Parks in Britain. The Lake District is intimately associated with English literature in the 18th and 19th centuries. The greater part of the area is now administered as the Government Office Regions of the West Midlands and East Midlands, though parts of the traditional Midlands are also in surrounding regions, namely Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (East of England), Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire (South East), Gloucestershire (South West) and Northern Lincolnshire (Yorkshire and the Humber).,The Midlands.,Para. 4 _ is dramatic, with its genuine steep slopes. The Peak District,The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, lying mainly in northern Derbyshire, but also covering parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire. An area of great diversity, it is conventionally split into the northern Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found and whose geology is gritstone, and the southern White Peak, where most of the population lives and where the geology is mainly limestone-based. Most of the area falls within the Peak District National Park, whose designation in 1951 made it the first national park in the United Kingdom.
