With the characteristics of oceanographic research in the Taiwan Strait region and that in gulfs, river estuaries along the strait, FJIO mainly runs the businesses ranging from the marine plan and management, development of marine information system, port exploration and measure, marine environmental observation and assessment, mariculture technology to new species culture & disease control technology and so on. Fujian Institute of Oceanography consists of four research departments that focus on the fields of marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology and marine hydrometeorology, and three centers: International Communication & Training Centre, Coastland and Island Research Centre and Marine Environment Science Research Centre. Its scientific research building (also the administration building) covers a building area of 3,671 with fine-equipped laboratories and scientific research facilities. In addition, FJIO owns “Yan Ping No.2” oceanographic research vessel with displacement of 780 tons.Facing the Taiwan Strait, which links with East China Sea and South China Sea, Fujian Province crosses the sea areas of tropical zone, subtropical zone and temperate zone and boasts its rich marine organism resources, diversified mariculture species, advanced culturing and processing technologies. Meanwhile, Xiamen municipal government is putting a great premium on the establishment of marine and environment and operating the innovative management so Xiamen Model has been regarded as one of the international advanced demonstration models of ICM(Integrated Coastal Management), and Xiamen boasts of its strong marine science and technology power nowadays. With the accumulation of research technology and professional experience in the fields of mariculture, marine and fisheries management and marine environmental monitoring, which have got from the practices of serving for governmental marine management, International Communication & Training Centre of FJIO, has successfully operated 8 training courses (seminars) which are sponsored by Ministry of Commerce, PRC since 2005. They respectively focus on 3 fields: Mariculture Technology, Integrated Coastal Management and Management of Marine Fisheries. So far, there are 379 officers and technical personnel who are from 66 countries, participating FJIOs training programs.
