was prepared by the s tandards australia commit tee on overhead lines to supersede as 1222.2 1973, steel conductors and stays for overhead power transmission purposes, part 2: al uminium clad (sc/ ac ), and it is the second part of a two-part series, viz.as 1222 steel conductors and stays bare overheadpart 1:galvanized (sc/ gz)part 2:al uminium clad (sc/ ac )the s tandard conforms generally with various internati onal electrotechnical commission (iec)publi cations on overhead conductors and with ie c draft, document 7 (central office) 434.in determining conductor sizes, a range of wire sizes has been provided similar to that for conductors specified in the 1973 edit ion. conductors wit h other dimensions can also be supplied by reference to this st andard.wi re sizes have not been changed from the previous editi on but major modifications have been made in the foll owing areas:(a) the provisions allowing joining of finished wires has been eliminated.(b) the sampling rate of specimens for routi ne tests relies on a quali ty assurance plan.(c) a new appendix b covers the coefficient of linear expansion and the theoreti cal basis for the calculation of modulus of elasticity.(d) a new appendix c has been included which highlights it ems to be specified by the purchaser or agreed between purchaser and manufacturer at the time of order. copyri ghtstandards australi auser s of standar overheadpart 2: aluminium clad (sc/ac)sectio n 1 scope a nd ge n era l1.1 sc ope this s tandard specifies requirements and tests for bare electrical conductors for overhead power transmission purposes, constructed from aluminium-clad steel wires, having a minimum aluminium radial thickness of 5% of the nominal diameter of the wire. this corresponds to iec class 20sa type a of aluminium-clad steel wires.for the purpose of this s tandard, the term conductor includes stays.notes:1 appendix a gives methods to calculate conductor pro pert ies.2 appendix b gives the coeff icient of l inear expansion and the t heor etical basis f or the calculati on of modulus of elasti city.3 appendix c li sts info rm ation which should be supplied wi th enquir ies and or ders f or conductor this s tandard, the definit ions given in as 1057 and those below apply.1.3.1 wire a fil ament of drawn metal having a constant circular cross section.1.3.2 king wire a central wire of a conductor having a nominal diameter larger than that of the surrounding wires.1.3.3 cond u ctor a finished circular stranded assembly consisting of three or more wires laid up together.1.3.4 diameter the mean of two measurements at right angles taken at any one cross-secti on.1.3.5 direction of lay the directi on of lay is defined as right-hand or left-hand, as follows:(a) ri ght-hand lay when the slope of the wires is in the direction of the central part of the letterz when the conductor is held verticall y.(b) left-hand lay when the slope of the wires is in the direction of the central part of the letters when the conductor is held verticall y.1.3.6 lay len gth the axial length of one complete turn of the heli x formed by an individual wire in a stranded conductor.1.3.7 lay ratio the rati o of the lay length to the nominal external diameter of the corresponding layer of wires in the stranded conductor.1.3.8 break in g load of a wire the maximum load obtained in a tensil e test of wire.1.3.9 ultimate tensil e stress the breaking load divided by the original cross-secti onal area of the test wire.copyri ght1.3.10 non- greased con du ctor a conductor which is dry and free from grease, other than a residue of a manufacturing lubricant which may be on the wires.1.3.11 fu ll y greased cond uctor a conductor in which grease is applied to all wires with the exception of the outermost layer.1.3.12 s u rface fracture a crack on the surface of a wire visible to an observer with normal or corrected vision.1.3.13 spool a container of wire which is to be install ed on a stranding machine to manufacture the conductor.1.3.14 s tatistical con trol where variati on in the output of a process is random and is an inherent part of the system. this condition impli es an absence of special causes of variation.1.3.15 process cap abili ty the limit s of inherent variabil ity within which a process operates as governed by the prevailing circumstances.note: i n pra ctice this var iabili ty i s norm ally t aken t o be six standard deviations.1.4 nome nclature aluminium-clad steel conductors covered by this s tandard shall have the code sc /ac.sectio n 2 mat erial req ui remen ts a n d wire pro perties2.1 general the conductor shall be constructed of aluminium-clad steel wires having the properti es specified in this st andard.if specified, the conductor may contain grease for addit ional protecti on against corrosion.it is not intended that wires from a conductor purporti ng to comply with this st andard should be subjected to chemical analysis.2.2 materials2.2.1 general the wire shall consist of a round steel core with aluminium cladding. the aluminium shall conform to the composit ion requirements of all oy 1350 as specified in as 2848.1.the cladding shall provide a uniform and conti nuous aluminium cladding as described incl auses 2.2.2 and 2.2.3, and shall comply wit h the requirement of clause 2.3.2.2.2 s teel the base metal shall be full y-kil led steel in accordance wit h as 1442.2.2.3 alumini um the aluminium used for cladding shall have a minimum purit y of 99.5% wit h impuriti es limited to (a) copper . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.05% maximum; and(b) copper plus sil icon plus iron . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.50% maximum. the coating shall comply with the relevant requirements of clause 4.3.2.2.4 grease grease, used for additional corrosion protecti on, shall have a dropping point of not less than 120c determined in accordance with as tm d566.2.3 wire prope rties2.3.1 general before stranding, all wires shall meet the dimensional tolerances of table 2.1. f or non-standard sizes, the wires shall have a minimum ultimate tensile stress corresponding to that of the next larger standard wire size as specified in table 2.2.joints may be made in the base steel rod and these may be retained in the final wire provided that, at the positi on of the joint, there shall be a minimum aluminium radial thickness of 5% of nominal diameter of the wire. the finished wire shall contain no joints other than those made in the base steel rod.nomi nal diamete rtable secti on)%2.751.532.3.2 freed om from d efects the wires shall be smooth and free from all imperfections such as fissures, roughness, grooves, inclusions or other defects which may endanger the performance of the product.2.3.3 alumini um-clad steel wire2.3.3.1 general the required properties and sizes of aluminium-clad steel wire are given intable 2.2.values adopted for the basic properti es of wire for the purpose of this s tandard are set out incl auses 2.3.2.2 to 2.3.2.6.2.3.3.2 densit y the densit y of aluminium-clad steel wire at 20c is taken as 6.59 10 3 kg/m 3.2.3.3.3 resistivity the resistivity of aluminium-clad steel wire varies considerably with chemical composit ion, microstructure, tensile strength, and cladding thickness. maximum value at 20c is taken as 0.085,.m (this corresponds to 20.3% conductivity iacs*).2.3.3.4 constant-mass temperature coeffi cient of resistance ( 20) the constant-mass temperature coefficient of resistance of aluminium-clad steel wire at 20c, measured between two potential points rigidly fixed to the wire, is taken as 3.6 10 -3 per c.2.3.3.5 modulus of elasticit y the modulus of elasticity of aluminium-clad steel wire is taken as162 gp a.*
