They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn phototaking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time. When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?” One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”(Text 10)If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a months holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa the lion, elephant and hippopotamus are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries. AMake Time to Make FriendsGap Year Open Day (Saturday 11 July)Develop Yourself Through Sharing with OthersWant to take a break from studying? One possibility is generating replacement for a dying relative. All such possibilities, however, raise the concern that the clone would be treated as less than a complete individual, because he or she would likely suffer from limitations and expectations based on the familys knowledge of the genetic “twin”. Those expectations might be false, because human personality is only partly determined by genes. The clone of an extrovert (性格外向的人) could have a quite different way of behavior.Clones for athletes, movie stars, or scientists might well choose different careers because of chance events in early life. Some people have also pointed out that couples in which one member is infertile (不生育) might choose to make a copy of one or the other partner. But society ought to be concerned that a couple might not treat naturally a child who is a copy of just one of them.Because other methods are available for the treatment of all known types of infertility, and the traditional choice seems more appropriate.None of the suggested uses of cloning for making copies of existing people is ethically acceptable to my way of thinking, because they are not in the interests of the resulting child. It should go without saying that I am strongly opposed to allowing cloned human embryos to develop so that they can be tissue donors. In spite of this, it seems clear that cloning from cultured (人工培育的) cells will offer important medical opportunities. Predictions about new technologies are often wrong; societal attitudes change; unexpected developments occur.Time will tell. But biomedical researchers looking into the potential of cloning now have plenty to do.25Towards cloning an existing person, what concern does the author show ?AThe clone created is unlikely to fulfill your expectations.BThe clone created is ethically unacceptable.CThe clone created will be mistreated.DThe clone created will have one defect or another. 26According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?AOnes personality is determined by neither their genes nor the environment they live in.BOnes personality is not entirely determined by their genes.COnes personality is not determined by their genes.DOnes personality is determined by the environment they live in. B。27What is the authors attitude towards cloning technology?AIt should wait till peoples views change.BIt should be condemned.CIt was unethical from the very beginning.DIt has medical potential for scientists to explore. D。 CThere are many things that go into making a successful school, and success can be measured in many ways. Often, the teachers are praised for a schools success and blamed for its failure. Yet, in order for a school to be effective, it must be a place where teaching and learning can easily take place, and that requires the hard work of more than just educators. Students must take learning into their own hands and feel as if what they are doing is as important as it actually is. This can only be done with the cooperation of every adult that is involved in the students life. Some of these individuals often go unnoticed, yet the role they play in the students lives is immeasurable.Administrative assistants welcome students at the beginning of the day and answer a large number of questions. When an assistant remembers a students name or even something special about that student, it communicates to him that he is cared for. The assistant can also give that extra encouragement for a student to make better choices, especially when they are visiting the principals office.Cafeteria workers have a short period of time to interact with students, but can make a big difference as well. Beyond meeting nutritional needs, cafeteria workers may also on occasion meet the emotional needs of the students they serve. Students benefit from positive interaction with adults, and cafeteria workers may give that extra bit of encouragement that a child needs.Custodians (管理人员) are often underappreciated for all that they give to schools. They have to be knowledgeable about everything from cleaning to fixing the most intricate (复杂的) tools. They get to school early in the morning before teachers arrive and lock up late at night after the last student has left from the afterschool event. They also make sure teachers are equipped with the necessary items and prepare the rooms so that they are ready for learning. A great custodian also gives that kind word or extra smile to that student who needs it most.28If an assistant remembers a students name, the student will feel that _.Ahe is cared forBhe is specialChe has done something wrongDhe has made progress in study解析:选A细节理解题。 29Which of the following is TRUE about cafeteria workers?AIts enough for them to cook for the students.BIts hard for them to interact with the students.CThey can also meet the emotional needs of the students.DThey have the most interaction with students at school. 30We learn from the fourth paragraph that _.Acustodians play the least important role in a schoolBthe work of custodians often goes unnoticedCcustodians should be more serious with studentsDcustodians work is always appreciated at school解析:选B推理判断题。 31How does the author feel about the staff mentioned in the text?ADisappointed.BAppreciative.CDissatisfied. DDoubtful. DThe tombs of Pompeii, the Roman city buried by a volcanic eruption (火山喷发) in A. D. 79, are quite special. Animal bones, broken potteries (陶器) and architectural material, such as bricks, were found crowded inside and outside the tombs where the citys dead were laid to rest.To explain the condition, some brought out a theory that 15 years before the eruption, an earthquake left Pompeii in disorder. But archaeological evidence shows that the city wasnt forsaken by its people. Instead of leaving, citizens appeared to have rebuilt the public spaces and houses. “It just didnt make sense that garbage would mean the tombs werent being used,” said Allison Emmerson from University of Cincinnati. She suggested that we shouldnt judge Pompeii by modern standards, which never encourage being messy in life. “Attitudes toward the garbage are very culturally defined, and it looks like in Pompeii attitudes were very different from ours,” said Emmerson. The same sort of garbage was also found in the city streets of Pompeii, along the walls of the city, and even on the floors of homes. In a house that appeared to have served as a r
