i general motors engineering standards i materials and processes - procedures i test procedure for the locking ability performance of nonmetallic locking element type prevailing torque lock screws gm61 89p 1 scope. 1.1 this standard establishes conformance test procedures for the locking ability performance of prevailing torque type lock saews which utilixe a nonmetallic locking elemmt (hereinafter called lock screw). of inch series lock screws shall have class 2a tolerance. however, that portion of the threaded length containing the locking elcmnt need not conform with thread gaging require- ments unless the patch is removed. note: locr is a generic term used to identify the extemally headed products coved in this standard. the terms lock and locking arc not intended to imply an indefinite permanency of fixity. 3.2.2 thread start. lock screws shall assemble a m of one full turn by the fingers into any mating internally threaded component having threads that conform to the dimen- sions shown on pages e-l.lolm and e-1.101 of gm engineering standards for metric and inch series, respectively, before contacting the locking element. 1.2 the prevailing torque values given in this standard are conformance requirements for lock screws and apply only to the combination of test conditions described in the locking ability test procedures 4.2 or 4.3. if the conditions of the actual service application differ from those of 4.2 or 4.3 (e.g., hemally thread4 hole in a different material, length of thread engagement, class of intemal thread tolerance, speed of driv- ing, different plating or coating on screw or mating part) the prevailing torque values may differ. such values can only be determined through testing the lock screw in its application. 3.3 lgciung elbment. 3.3.1 the effective length of the locking elexrxutt shall be a minimum of 1.2 times the lock screw s nominal diameter with flash on one thread permissible on both ends. 3.3.2 the width of the locking element normally shall not exceed 60 of the lock screw s circumference. when autho- rized by the purchaser, wider locking elements up to full circumferenm (3607 may be used provided the torque tequire- mcnts listed in table 1 are met. 1.3 this standard is not concerned with dimensional features such as head styles, or with other mechanical or performance capabilities such as strength properties, corrosion resistance, sealing, suitability for use in low temperatures, or temperatures above 125 c, and/or consistency of torque-to-tension relation- ships during assembly. such features and properties are covered in other standards and specifications and must be ref- erenced when specifying a lock screw to assure that all of the service conditions of the particular engineering application are properly met. 3.4 locking ability 2 general 3.4.1 the prevailing torque of lock screws occurring during any installation or removal shall not exceed the maximum pm- wiling torque specified in table 1 when tested as specified in 4.2 or 4.3. in addition, the maximum prevailing torque devel- oped by lock screws during fhst and fifth removals shall not be less than the miniium first and fifth removal torques, respectively, as specified in table 1 when tested in accordance with 4.2 or 4.3: and at no time shall the minimum prevailing torque developed by lock sctews duriug fifth removal be xero. 2.1 a prevailing torque lock screw is an externally threaded fastener which is frictionally resistant to rotation due to a self- contained prevailing-torque feature, and not because of a com- pressive load developed against the underhead bearing surface of the screw or a tensile load developed in the shank of the smw. 3.4.2 lock screws which are too short or which have thread lengths too short to permit testing in accordance with 4.2 or 4.3shall have their prevailing torque requirements and test pro- cedure established by agreement between the purchaser and manufacturer. 2.2 nonmetallic locking element type prevailing torque lock screws are metallic screws to which a nylon, polyester or equivalent nonmetallic locking element has been inserted in or bon 3275 , 5116-18 3350 4125 4725 511 b24 3675 4575 5200 31 june 1982, complete revision. _ - april 1989 page 5 6189p copyright gen
