Part Reading Comprehension Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. Passage 1 The word “generosity” has been devalued somewhat recently. A millionaire may give his friend a house in the beautiful suburb;A rich man could fly halfway round the world to meet his friends for his birthday party. In this case, generosity is more an action of showing off than a sincere action of giving. And such showing off lacks the most important quality of real generosity: to offer kindness and love without expecting anything in return. Real generosity, when you meet it, is simply so pleasant. And as a quality, it belongs equally to the rich and the poor. A traveler in a faraway place felt is when he shared bread, room, even bed with a farmers family, whose general principle is “A guest in the house is God in the house”. Another story is about a university student from Oxford. He did something out of his natural sense of generosity when he learned that his roommate couldnt afford an impossibly expensive textbook, a book which was very rare in second-hand shops. Knowing that his roommate was far too proud to accept such a book as present from him, the rich student bought a new copy for 35 pounds at Blackwells bookshop. He dirtied it up a bit and tore off the paper cover, made a few dog-ears and pencil marks against what he thought might be important parts, and wrote and invented name in the front., He even remembered to age the ink by putting it over fire. Then he went back, looking extremely proud of himself and claiming to have got the book in a second-hand bookshop. “Beaten them down to two pounds!” To make his friend believe him, he showed a receipt for the money by buying himself another book at the same place. Ten years later, the poorer student got to know the truth. Actually he was suspicious at the very beginning, though he didnt force his richer friend to tell the truth. He appreciated the invaluable generosity as well as the valuable book. Real generosity lies in the givers thoughtfulness, not its price or wrapping of the gift. It is one of the things which make us human and should be honored more than we do now. 36. A millionaire gives his friend a beautiful house, which is considered as _by the author. A. a sincere action of giving B. an action of showing off C. a good example of generosity D. a quality of being kind to others 37. Which of the following is true of real generosity? A. First, Jane stops by. Then, its the phone. Later, your boss tells you to drop everything- shes got a rush job. And you have that meeting at three! All these things are important. If only you could rearrange them without breaking your concentration. And you can! Weve heard about Quality time at home- why not quality time on the job? Begin by finding out those parts of the day during which youre most creative. You may work best in the morning or in the afternoon. No matter - just find your time and build a wall around it. Say that for you, quality time begins at ten. Focus on your major task then, and dont let anything interrupt you. If you have a secretary, tell her or him to hold all calls and visitors; if you dont, try to ask a colleague to help you. The point is that both outsiders and colleagues will know that you will not be available for a part of each day. Why? Because you are working! Prepare for this special block of time as carefully as you would for an important meeting. Dont waste precious minutes searching for memos or notes. Be ready to begin precisely at ten, and get the most out of every second. You might like to use your block simply for thinking about a project, problem or a new idea. Start small - maybe thirty or forty minutes, three times a week, building up to at least an hour. Sure, youll have to chip away at your block a little sometimes, but guard that hour as you would any other valued possession. 41.According to the passage, when dont you want to be interrupted? A. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to London printers, Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius Government house, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidently wrote down the words “post office” instead of “post paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed. Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left, fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blues rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for it. 46. A postage stamps value to collectors is raised if_. A. in Mauritius B. at Mauritius Government House C. in a post office D. in London Passage 4 When invited to lunch, dinner, or supper, it is very impolite to arrive late, as it is usually planned to have the meal at the exact hour given in the invitation. By arriving late, you will not only keep the other guests waiting, but greatly inconvenience the hostess and spoil the dinner. Western cooking is not, like Chinese, served up at the last minute, dish by dish from the frying pan. The dishes are all cooked, and planned to be ready exactly on the hour for which you are invited. If you are twenty minutes late, the meat will be overdone, the cauliflower will have lost its freshness, the French fried potatoes their crispness, the other guests their tempers, and the hostess her good opinion of your manners. It is just as important not to arrive too early. Your hostess may be still dressing or busy arranging the table or cooking the dinner, and not prepared to meet you. One should plan to arrive not more than five minutes before the appointment timejust in time to remove ones wraps and meet the other guests before dinner. When you arrive, the hostess or some member of the family will probably meet you at the door and take your coat and hat. In the winter time you should dress more lightly than usual, as you may expect the rooms to be warmer than in most Chinese homes. It is bad manners to open a window or a door in another persons home without first asking permission, and before you do that, you should consider the comfort of the other people present. Your hostess will accompany you into the room where the guests are assembled and introduce you to anyone you may not already know. Then she may indicate a seat for you, or you may find one to suit yourself. There is no order of importance of seats, so it does not matter where or when you sit down, except that a gentleman never sits when any lady is still standing. As later guests arrive you will rise to be introduced to them if you are a gentleman; if a lady, you will not rise except for older ladies or persons of special importance. 51. Why is it not polite to arrive late when invited to lunch, dinner, or supper? A.Because the meal has already been served B. Because that wilI inconvenience the hostess and spoil the dinner C. Because the food is to be served up dish after dish D. Because the other guests wont be able to leave in time 52. Which of the following statements is true of the Chinese dishes served at a dinner?
