Unit 1 Names 课下练熟高考阅读理解提速练练速度(限时:20分钟)A(2017河南省洛阳市统一考试)Heritage is our legacy (遗产) from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable (无可取代的) sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Great Wall of China make up our worlds heritage. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.How does a place become a World Heritage Site? It takes a lot of people to decide. 1)If a country wants one of its places to be on the World Heritage List, it has to ask UNESCO. The place must be important and special. UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list in 1987 because, it said, it was a great part of Chinese culture and beautifully made to go with the land. When a country asks, it must also make a plan for taking care of the place.2)The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO talks about different places and decides whether to put them on the list. The committee meets every June. Many experts help the committee to decide.3)After a new place goes on the list, UNESCO gives money to help keep it looking good. If a place is in serious danger, it may be put on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. UNESCO gives special care and help to those places. 4)Countries have to give UNESCO regular reports about places on the list. If UNESCO thinks a country isnt taking good enough care of a place, the site will be taken off the list. 1What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?ATo tell us what is heritage. After youve done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, tasted the local food in Paris, and danced to your hearts content at the Brazilian Carnival, where else can you go? What exotic (异国风情的) tourist destination awaits you?Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! Its considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can cope with the low temperatures.Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and its still a small scale. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many wont even leave the boat. The BBCs Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave footprints and they all go to the same place, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to breed. But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates. Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And theyre likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.According to Rix, guidelines are followed when youre about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect (为消毒) their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced. And once on land, theres no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind. Tourists fortunate enough to visit Antarctica must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking (美妙的;惊人的) views. 5According to the second paragraph, we can learn that _.AAntarctica has become the best place for people to travelBonly scientists can be allowed to go to AntarcticaCAntarctica is less affected by human activitiesDno animals can survive in Antarctica except penguins解析:选C推理判断题。根据第二段的第二句“Its considered the last great wilderness on Earth.” 6Juliet Rixs travel in Antarctica mentioned in the fourth paragraph indicates that _.Agovernments should take measures to stop tourists from going to AntarcticaBwhether tourists should go to Antarctica or not should be considered carefullyCthe animals habitat in Antarctica has been seriously affected by tourismDonly journalists begin to pay attention to the environmental protection in Antarctica解析:选B推理判断题。根据第四段的“asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment”以及“Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave footprints and they all go to the same place”可推知,人们是否应该去南极洲旅游应认真地考虑一下。7Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Rix?ATourists can eat and smoke in Antarctica.BTourists can take something they like from Antarctica.CTourists can throw away something they dont need in Antarctica.DTourists can enjoy the beautiful scenery in Antarctica. 8Which of the following is the best title of this passage?AWhy cant tourists go to Antarctica?BHow can tourists go to Antarctica?CShould tourists go to Antarctica?DAre tourists allowed to go to Antarctica? CIn 1800, only three percent of the worlds population lived in cities.Only one city Beijing had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived in cities, and the worlds ten largest cities all had populations exceeding (超过) one million.By 2000, the number of city dwellers (居民) exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the worlds population crossed a tipping point more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities.By 2050, that could increase to over twothirds.Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earths growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of Triumph of the City, is one such person.Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas.Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand.Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow half of the worlds population to live on about four percent of the land. This leaves more space for open country, such as farmland.City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside.Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate.City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So its a mistake to see urbanization as evil; its a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth. 9What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?AThe history of modern cities.BChanges taking place within cities.CHow cities have grown over time.DWhy modern cities are changing. C。10How have experts attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?AThey now view the weaknesses as strengths.BThey no longer see cityliving as
