Warming up by reading aloud to the recording Hello, class. You need good role models for reading. Hearing a teacher, a tape recorder, read aloud allows you to hear the phrasing, inflections, and expressions that a good reader uses. How can you learn this if all you hear is your classmates stumbling through an oral passage? Buy a tape recorder and the tapes to go with the textbooks to read aloud to the recordings. Now listen and read to the recording of the text THE ROAD IS ALWAYS AHEAD OF YOU.II. Discovering useful words and expressions An English word can consist of three parts: the root, a prefix and a suffix. The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning (definition) of the word. The root is the base element of the word. A prefix is a word element that is placed in front of a root. A prefix changes the words meaning or makes a new word. A suffix is a word element that is placed after the root. The suffix changes the words meaning as well as its function (use). Prefixes and suffixes are called affixes because they are attached to a root.Now go to page 4 do exercises 1, 2 and 3. Revising useful structuresLearning about the subjectEvery complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about, while the predicate tells something about the subject. The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. You can find the subject of a sentence if you can find the verb. Ask the question, Who or what verbs or verbed? and the answer to that question is the subject. For instance, in the sentence The computers in the Learning Center must be replaced, the verb is must be replaced. What must be replaced? The computers. So the subject is computers. A simple subject is the subject of a sentence stripped of modifiers. To consolidate your understanding of the Subject , please go on to do exercises 1 and 2 on page 5 and 6. IV. Closing down by reading about Beijing Olympic Green Olympics - to achieve this goal, priority will be given to environmental protection (EP) in the planning, designing and construction of Olympic venues and facilities and strict ecological environment standards and systematic supporting systems will be established. EP technologies and means will be extensively used in promoting, on a large scale and in various aspects, environmental treatment, afforestation and beautification of urban and rural areas. We will raise the environmental awareness of the whole society and encourage the public to consciously opt for green consumption and actively join in activities aimed at improving the ecological environment, in an effort to drastically improve the environmental quality of the capital and build it into an ecological city.High-tech Olympics - we will closely follow the latest high-tech developments home and abroad and integrate the high-tech achievements nationwide so as to host a magnificent sports event in high-tech environment. In doing so, Beijings capacity in high-tech innovation will be improved and the application of high-tech achievements in production and peoples life promoted. Beijing Olympic Games will be a window to showcase our high-tech achievements and innovative capacity.Peoples Olympics - we will take the hosting of the Olympic Games as an opportunity to popularize the Olympic spirit, promote the traditional Chinese culture, showcase the history and development of Beijing as well as the friendliness and hospitality of its citizens. We will also take the Games as a bridge for cultural exchanges in order to deepen the understanding and enhance the trust and friendship among the peoples of different countries. We will always give first consideration to the need of people, especially the athletes and provide favorable natural and cultural environments and quality services for them. To promote the Olympic Games and Olympic Movement, we will organize diversified cultural and educational programs to cater to the needs of the people, especially the younger generation, for spiritual and cultural activities.
