摘要 赫尔曼麦尔维尔是美国浪漫主义时期最著名的作家之一。白鲸是他的代 表作。这部小说的主人公是亚哈船长。由于亚哈船长是这部经典作品中的主要人 物，且个性复杂，因此有很大的研究空间。尽管已经有很多人运用不同的文学批 评方法从历史、宗教、哲学、地理、种族、资本主义的本质等方面对它进行了研 究，但笔者认为原型批评是解读这个人物的绝佳视角，因为作品中存在大量原型 引用和原型暗示。 本文以弗雷泽、荣格、弗莱的原型理论为依据的。传统观点认为，亚哈船长 是个病态、疯狂的形象。但通过对圣经中亚哈国王与亚哈船长的比较，通过 对悲剧英雄的性格特征、母题、暗示、叙述模式与亚哈船长的对照，发现亚哈船 长在各方面均与悲剧英雄的特征非常吻合。此外，本文通过系统地运用原型批评 的方法对其重新解读，旨在将曲解的亚哈船长还原成一位有王者风范的悲剧英 雄。在悲剧英雄的事迹中，追寻、复仇和预言是永恒的母题，而在亚哈的事迹中 这些母题始终是伴随他的。亚哈船长对白鲸的不懈追寻，是以复仇为根本动因的， 而费达拉、以利亚、皮普等人的预言魔咒般逐一应验。在悲剧英雄的世界中， 阴影和曼荼罗是最觉的原型暗示。而他们在亚哈船长的事迹中也反复出现。自鲸 就是亚哈船长的阴影而曼荼罗则通过生与死、善与恶的对立统一、相辅相生中得 以实现。对亚哈船长的故事以他失去一条腿，远离家人准备复仇之行开始，这意 味着灾难的开始。途中，他如国王一样生活在船上，享受至高无尚的权力。他多 次经历了路过轮船的善意劝告，那是来自己上帝的爱；经历了内心对自己行为的 反思，这是他最顺意的时候。然后，他没有抓住这些机会，以死亡告终。这是倒 u 字型叙述模式，典型的悲剧叙述模式。论文分为四章。第一章简明扼要地介绍 了本文的研究目的、研究意义、研究方法及研究的局限性。第二章是文献综述， 回顾了与本文相关的理论，包括詹姆斯弗雷泽、卡尔荣格和诺索普弗莱的原 型理论和尼采、亚里士多德关于悲剧英雄发展的理论和对亚哈船长这一经典形象 的传统解读。第三章是对本文论点的系统阐述，运用原型批评的方法论证亚哈船 长是位悲剧英雄第四章是本文的总结，由分析得出结论，亚哈船长是一位悲剧性 的、具有原型意义的英雄。 关键词：白鲸：亚哈：原型批评：悲剧英雄 i i i ab s t r a c t h e r m a nm e l v i l l ei so n eo ft h eg r e a t e s tr o m a n t i c i s t si nt h ea m e r i c a nl i t e r a r y h i s t o r ya n dm o b yd i c ki sh i sr e p r e s e n t a t i v em a s t e r p i e c et h a ti sa b o u tt h eu n r e m i t t i n g p u r s u i to ft h em y s t e r i o u sw h i t ew h a l e -
