A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyones satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else-he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; he does so with skill and polish:“I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir , but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned.”Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is:“This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only“having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36.According to the passage, when a man is buying clothes, _.A.he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityB.he chooses things that others recommendC.he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right thingsD.he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear37.What do men care about the fit of new clothes?A.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average size.B.Most men just assume that the size is right for them.C.They make sure a thing fits before they buy it.D.They do not worry whether a thing fits well or not.38.What does a man do when he cannot get exactly what he wants?A.He buys a similar thing of the color he wants.B.He usually does not buy anything.C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.39.What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.D.They listen to advice but seldom take it.40.What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A.Men do not try clothes on in a shop.B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.C.Women care more about the quality than men.D.The time they take over buying clothes.Passage TwoAs a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling, without requiring the seller to purchase goods from the person who buys his products, or vice versa. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value-that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal, which would be a difficult and time-consuming task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter fish bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to barter fish for bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to exchange bananas is or not keen on fish.Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a person could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Even when a person actually produced a complete product the difficulties would be overwhelming. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on would involve obvious disadvantages-imagine a coal-miner attempting to save enough coal, which of course is his product, to keep him for life. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity.41. Using money as a medium of exchange means that_.A. you have to sell something in order to buy somethingB. you have to buy something in order to sell somethingC. you dont have to buy something in order to sell somethingdesk, “learning a great deal about the subject matter, and improving their own writing as a direct result of grading other students”paper.56.A.madeB. taken C. selectedD. offered57.A.requestB. demandC. challengeD. requirement58.A.andB. but C. althoughD. unless59.A.competitiveB. rewardingC. routineD. formidable60.A.spaciouslyB. exceptionallyC. typicallyD. unusually61.A.interestedB. delightedC. tiredD. bored62.A.frequentlyB. delightedlyC. inevitablyD. unexpectedly63.A.classB. problemC. questionD. answer64.A.challengeB. difficultyC. problemD. solution65.A.overcomeB. reduceC. meetD. improve66.A.injectedB. integrateC. inherentD. inherited67.A.introducedB. madeC. practicedD. revised68.A.seminarB. classroomC. discussionD. course69.A.incredibleB. obscureC. unanticipatedD. inspiring70.A.throughB. at C. inD. by71.A.studentsB. instructorsC. professorsD. assistants72.A.so that B. althoughC. whenD. because73.A.ensureB. assureC. decideD. report74.A.new teachersB. senior studentsC. associate professorsD. part-time instructors75.A.inspirationB. expectationC. stimulationD. perspectivePart IV Writing (15%)Directions: This part is to test your ability in practical writing. However, in the early of March the number of dishes was dramatically reduced, and there was a marked deterioration in quality. I have tried the canteen periodically since then and have always been served overcooked, lukewarw food. The sharp decline in the number of students using the canteen suggests to me that my criticisms are generally held.I would be very grateful if you could explain to me why this decline in standard has occurred, and whether the school intends to take steps to rectify the situation.(121 words)Yours incerely,Zhang Ning2007年广东省普通高等学校本科插班生招生考试Part I Vocabulary and Structure (35%)1.Trains stop here in order to _ passengers.A.get off B.put up C.get onD.pick up 2.Fortunately, the demonstration _ to be quite peaceful.A.turned on B.turned outC.showed off D.showed up3.Could you tell me _ to fly from Chicago to New York?A.it costs how much B.how much does it cost C.how much costs it D.how much it costs4.The book covers a wide _ of topics on international politics.A.rangeB.numberC.collection D.amount5.I know its not important but I cant help _ about it.A.to thinkB. thinkingC.thinks D.think6.Solid-fuel engines are simpler than liquid-fuel engines, _ have important uses.A.both of themB.bothC.both of whichD.both all7.Unfortunately, he didnt _ to read the agreement carefully before signing it.A.bother B.disturbC.occurD.happen8.Where do you normally have your hair _ ?.A.being doneB.do C.to be done D.done9.I _ you with the funds .
