AWhen we first moved into our present home, the houses only had a chainlink fence (钢丝网围栏) between them. People behind us were older; their children were in their late teens, and we didnt see them or hear from them much.Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party, the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch. We would have invited their children if they had been of the same age. While our older children had parties the neighbors little kids would shout through the fence the entire time; we knew it was time to get a new fence. When we built our fence next to the old one, they not only paid nothing for it, but watched us have it built. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline (蹦床). She could only see the tops of their heads but couldnt figure out who it was. Good people, just too much interest in us. Years later they rebuilt their houses and built a pretty fence between the houses next to the old one. They were not surprised that we didnt want to pay for it. I have to admit their fence is much prettier than our wooden one.Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence. We have left ours in place. While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have fences between each of us. Only in this way can we protect our little privacy (隐私), as fences certainly do make good neighbors. 1When the authors older children had a party, _.Ahis neighbors children also had a party as they didBthey would invite his neighbors children to attend itChis neighbors children would shout behind the fenceDhis neighbors children would watch it through the window解析:选C细节理解题。根据第二段的最后一句“While our older children had parties the neighbors little kids would shout through the fence the entire time”可知,答案选C。2How did the mother know the children were jumping on the trampoline?AShe learned about it by making a call.BShe saw the tops of the childrens heads.CShe heard the sound of the children jumping.DHer children told her about it. 从第三段的“She could only see the tops of their heads but couldnt figure out who it was.” B。3Which of the following statements is TRUE?AThe authors neighbors all have built strong fences.BOld people living behind liked children very much.CThe young neighbors wanted the author to pay for the fence.DThe young neighbors were very angry about the authors ugly fence. 由最后一段的“Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence.” A。4We can learn from the passage that _.Athe young mother was interested in other families lifeBthe authors neighbors started to live there when the author was very youngCthe author thinks that the fences destroy the friendship between the neighborsDthe authors family was not a big one when the younger family moved here解析:选A推理判断题。文章第三段提到隔壁的那位妈妈打电话问是谁在蹦床上跳,又根据下文的“Good people, just too much interest in us.” BI live in New York City, and my neighbors are people I dont know. My city, neighborhood and block are filled with people who dont know me, dont care to know me, and dont talk to me. I find that its pretty hard to love people you dont even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendans story recently and was moved. One day, Brendan, a young man in New York, was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered “no”. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, “I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I will take you out for Chinese food.”Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendans heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it,_Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her to Target, and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.May Brendans story encourage us to find a new way to honor, serve and love the people around us. 5What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 1?AHe often stays indoors.BHe cares about his neighbors.CHe is good at making friends.DHe hardly talks to his neighbors. 根据第一段的“I live in New York City, and my . and dont talk to me.” 6What did Brendan do when Jackie asked him for money?AHe was angry with her.BHe didnt give her any.CHe offered her some food.DHe gave her some spare change. 根据第二段的“He said that he had no money . he answered no”可知,Brendan 并没有给Jackie钱。7After Brendan and Jackie had lunch together, they _.Adeveloped a new friendshipBhelped each other find workCfell in love with each otherDdiscovered they were classmates解析:选A细节理解题。根据第三段的“Brendan got the job. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was awkward and shy. She wasnt. I couldnt stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends. One day, she invited me over and I said yes I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest fashions, wanted to invite me.She lived on the fourth floor in a tworoom place. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies which was my next surprise. I would have thought she had outgrown (因长大而不适用) them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walkin cupboard laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. Thats when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations. We had a great time that afternoon. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it sometimes used her as a model for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.Paris charmed (吸引) the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free pieces. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each others houses and spent every free moment together.
