World Expo 2010 Shanghai China is to be staged in Shanghai from May1 to October 31, 2010. If you plan to visit the Shanghai Expo this summer, China Pavilion is a must-see area for you.China Pavilion(馆), which is called Oriental Crown(东方之冠), is located at the center of the Expo site. Standing 63 meters tall, the China Pavilion takes the shape of an emperors crown, with the upper layers larger than the lower ones. Covering 160,000 square meters in floor space, the pavilion consists of a national hall and a regional hall. Construction on the China Pavilion began on December 18, 2007. The design of the China Pavilion was picked from a total of 344 designs put forward by Chinese from around the world. The pavilion possesses both traditional and modern features, which helps develop the theme of the 2010 Expo: “ Better City, Better Life”. For example, it is red in appearance, which contains the elements of traditional Chinese culture, and it is green indoors, with the use of energy-saving techniques. The Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract 70 million visitors from across the globe. It is estimated that 400,000 people will visit the Expo and its 140 pavilions every day during the period, but the China Pavilion is only able to receive about one tenth of the total. How to accommodate so many people in the pavilion remains a tough task. Luckily, the China Pavilion is built as a permanent landmark.During the Expo, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of “ Chinese wisdom in urban development” by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. The three-story pavilion has three sections. The top floors “Footprint of the East” will show some of the changes in Chinese cities. There, you can see a film which shows how Chinese cities have changed, especially in the past 30 years. According to Lu Chuan, director of the film, the scenery is like something from Lord of the Rings. On the second floor, “Journey of Wisdom” will explain Chinas four great inventions. I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I had good days and bad days I didnt understand.Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp. When I arrived there, I was scared. It was so different from what I was used to. There were lots of dogs on the streets, and there was no downtown, few smoothly paved streets, and little to do for entertainment. Rain was not seen very often, earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was only able to communicate and needed one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldnt speak the thoughts in my head and there were so many. Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression (敌对心理) towards the people to lack of appetite. I was required to overcome all difficulties. As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy. But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept and to succeed in another culture. I now have a deeper understanding of both myself and others.59. On arriving in Chile, why did the author feel frightened?A. Because he did not know how to get along with the local people.B. Now, a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee, it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.Dr. Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didnt really have any expectation of which direction it could go into. To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical (统计学 ) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained, Thanks to the earlier studies, we have a lot more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And then 9,000 controls, people who do not have cancer. Those studies-in Europe and the United States-found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. We saw a protective effect for drinking more than 4 cups of coffee per day, Hashibe said. This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.Mia Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking Coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants (抗氧化物)in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers.63. This passage is probably taken from _A. a literature book B. a travel journalC. an old directory D. a medical magazine64. Dr. Hashibe expected nothing of her research because _A. it was impossible to get the desired result B. the research was much surprising in factC. no conclusions had been reached before D. the research team lacked faith in success65. Which of the following might have something to do with the protection against mouth cancer?A. Coffee without chemicals. B. Coffee without caffeine.C. Four cups of tea a day. D. Antioxidants in coffee.66. What do we know about Dr. Mia Hashibe and her research?A. She knew for sure how coffee may affect drinkers.B. She included 4,000 people without cancer in study.C. She found an effect for three cups of coffee a day.D. She based her research on several earlier studies.67. What would be the best title for the text?A. Drinking Coffee May Protect Some Cancers B. Drinking Coffee May Prevent Some CancersC. Drinking Coffee May Cure Some Caneers D. Drinking Coffee May Cause Some CancersD Is a recently discovered hormone the reason why folks who lose weight cant keep it off?Like millions of other fat people, at 530 inches high, more than 300 pounds, Carnie Wilson was not just fat. After trying all sort of diets that didnt work, she has to go to the stomach bypass surgery (胃部迂回手术), ie, have most of her stomach sewed up, only leaving tiny room to hold several table-spoonfuls at most. Result: she simply couldnt eat the way she used to. In three years, Wilson is one third of her former weight.Wilsons experience is not all that unusual, and while doctors still arent exactly sure what is going on, a report in last weeks Journal of Medicine offers an explanation. The loss of appetite in bypass patients may be linked to a recently discovered hormone called ghrelin. Not only t
