I didnt have many friends in primary and middle school and rarely opened up to anyone. I didnt even ask my teacher questions in class. I was scared of the world and the people around. As a child, I was scared to do anything without my parents mainly because I was afraid that I would do it badly. I was getting good grades and was well-behaved, but I wasnt happy. It was my belief that I was, for some reason, unable to do the things the others kids could do. I felt short. While in my second semester of college, I ran into some information on the Internet about something called social anxiety. I didnt really know much of the disorder. Thus I began to read about some of the symptoms and realized that social anxiety was the thing that hurt me so much.It is common knowledge that people with social anxiety experience nervousness in social situations. What a lot of people dont know is that one of the main causes of social anxiety is negative thinking. People having a negative idea of themselves often think that they are ugly or stupid.I realized what I was truly afraid of: not being good enough. I was afraid that people would look at me and would not like what they saw; I was scared of rejection. To help deal with these problems I began to practice deep thought and other mindfulness exercises. My mind slowly began to change.I realized that everyone, from star athletes to noble prize winners, experiences fear in their lives. Whether people are afraid of heights, planes, spiders, or talking to girls, we all experience anxiety and fear. There is no reason for anyone to feel excluded(排除在外的) because something scares them. People with anxiety disorders might have problems, but there is nothing wrong with them as people. They are just as humans as everyone else.24. Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbooks could never describe. In particular, words that British people use cause many language students to scratch(抓住) their heads.Heres an example: You happen to hear an Englishman calling someone a “wazzock”. But what exactly is a wazzock? This word, in fact, means a foolish person, although theres nothing about it that would help you guess that. There are many strange terms like this in British English - the Oxford English Dictionary would be much smaller without these odd(古怪的) usages filling its pages. How can these odd words be explained? Part of the answer is the British sense of humor. The British dont like to take things too seriously, and this is evident through many British words and phrases. For example, to spend a penny means to use the bathroom. It refers to the days when people had to pay a penny to use a public toilet. In an interview for the BBCs website, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be historical reasons for the sheer number of odd words and. phrases in British English. He thinks that they began in the late 16th and. early 17th centuries. This was a great age for the theatre, when Shakespeare and other writers worked hard to keep up with the demand for new plays. The theatres popularity also created an incentive to invent new words. With this in mind, perhaps Shakespeare and his peers are to blame for unusual British words such as “codswallop” and “balderdash”which both, ironically, mean nonsense. While these strange words may be confusing to non-native speakers, they certainly make studying English a lot more interesting.28. According to the text, why do many non-native speakers find it hard to learn English?A. A great many strange words make no sense to them.B. Dictionaries dont explain odd usages of many words.C. The English textbooks they study are usually out of date.D. The English vocabulary is too large for them to learn.29. With the example of “spend a penny”. the author intends to_ .A. explain the meaning and background of the phraseB. explain how some strange phrases were createdC. show what typical British sense of humor isD. show British peoples attitude toward strange words30. The underlined word“incentive”in Paragraph4 is closest in meaning to_ .A. anger B. motivation C. discussion D. relaxation31. What is the text mainly about?A. The development of the British English.B. Shakespeares influence on British English.C. The origin and meanings of British humor.D. Some reasons for the large number of odd words in British English.DRecordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives(蜂窝)either recorded or realmay even prevent elephants from damaging farmers crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasnt tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.32.As mentioned in the passage, Lucy .A. works by herself in AfricaB. needs to test more elephant groupsC. has stopped elephants eating cropsD. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms33. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?A. To record the sound of bees.B. To make a video of elephants.C. To see if elephants would run away.D. To find out more about the behavior of bees.34. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.35.Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?A. The life habits of the African elephants.B. The effect of the sound of bees on elephants.C. The life habits of the bees.D. How to avoid the angry bees.第二节 阅读下面的文章,从文章后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Its well-known by all the people to greet friends with a smile and a wave. 36 .However, what happens if your face and body send mixed messages? Would someone tend to believe the look on your face or the way you behave?Recently, scientists have dealt with these questions. They found that when a person is staring at your face, he might not believe what he sees if your body doesnt match the feeling that your face shows. 37 .Previous study had showed that the tone of a persons voice can be more important than the words spoken. For example, most people are more likely not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, “Im so excited.”When talking about emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists doubted that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated(孤独的) faces and isolated bodies that showed anger or fear. 38 .An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A frightened face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth. 39 .A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square, as if ready to fight back. These results told the researchers that mixed messages can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face, body language surely influences the emotion they read. 40 .And if you want to be understood it helps to avoid sending mixed messages.A. Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists.B. So, your body language is important for telling people your feelings.C. Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that puzzles people.D. An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight.E. Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds.F. They also showed pictures where angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies.G.
