And did you have to do it right in front of me? I might be old, but I can still hear.Remember the old days? By the time you came into the picture, I had already known Kate for three years. And then you came along. I knew she liked you so I welcomed you into our world. I remembered one night, she asked me if I thought you were the one. I barked “yes” repeatedly because I thought you would take great care of us. And you did. Look, I know youre a father of two now, but please try to include me a little bit more. Thats all Im asking. But are American and British English really so different? VocabularyThe most obvious difference between American and British English is vocabulary. There are hundreds of everyday words that are different. For example, Americans go on vacation while Brits go on holidays; New Yorkers live in apartments while Londoners live in flats. There are far more examples than we can talk about here. Fortunately, most Americans and Brits can usually guess the meaning through the context of a sentence.Past Tense VerbsYoull also find some differences with past forms of irregular verbs. The past tense of “learn” in American English is “learned”. British English has the option of “learned” or “learnt”. The same rule applies to “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend to use the -ed ending; Brits tend to use the-t ending.SpellingThere are hundreds of slight spelling differences between British and American English. Noah Webster, an author, politician and teacher, made an effort to reform English spelling in the late 1700s.Webster wanted to spell words the way they sounded. You can see Websters legacy(遗产) in the American spelling of words like color (from colour), honor (from honour), and labor(from labour). Not So Different After AllBritish and American English have far more similarities than differences. With the exception of some regional dialects, most Brits and Americans can understand each other without too much difficulty. They watch each others TV shows, sing each others songs and read each others books. They even make fun of each others accents.24. Which of the following is a group of American words?A. Vacation; holiday. B.Apartment; flat. C. Vacation; apartment. D. Holiday; flat.25. The underlined word “option” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by _.A. choice B. change C. structure D. use26. What do we know about British and American English from the last paragraph?A. They both have some strange words. B. They are affecting people using them.C.They connect people of the two countries. D. Their differences have little effect on communication.27. What can be the best title for the text?A. Ways to tell British English from American English.B. Differences between British and American English.C. Development of British and American English.D. Difficulty for Brits and Americans to understand each other.C MacDonalds will soon remove cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu to set a good example in offering a healthy diet for kids at its restaurants. Customers can still ask for cheeseburgers or chocolate milk with kids meal, but MacDonalds said that not listing them would make them less likely to be ordered. Since it removed soda from the menu four years ago, orders for it with the Happy Meal have fallen by 14%.As MacDonalds is known for getting more business from families with children, it is especially important for it to offer a healthy diet instead of junk food. And the Happy Meal is a key part of that. The Happy Meal has long been a target(目标) of health advocates(拥护) and parents who link it to childhood obesity(肥胖症). To get rid of its bad image, MacDonalds has made many changes on the Happy Meal over the years, including cutting the size of its fries and adding fruit. Recently, the company replaced its former apple juice with a new kind of juice that has less sugar. MacDonalds wants all its Happy Meal choices to have 600 calories or fewer. It also wants less than 10% of the meal calories to come from fat and added sugar. The cheeseburger and chocolate milk didnt meet those new standards. However, MacDonalds is trying to cut sugar from chocolate milk and believes itll be back on the menu eventually. There will be other changes. For example, bottled water will be added as a choice to the menu, but it will cost extra. Currently, the Happy Meal menu lists milk, chocolate milk, and apple juice. For international restaurants, MacDonalds said that a least half of the Happy Meal choices available must meet the new standards. Some MacDonalds restaurants are adding new menu items to obey. For example, In Italy, a grilled chicken sandwich was added to the Happy Meal menu.28.What is the direct influence of removing cheeseburgers and chocolate milk?A. Orders for them will fall.B. Other delicious foods will replace them.C. McDonalds will become less popular with kids.D. More families with children will prefer the Happy Meal.29. MacDonalds made changes to Happy Meal in order to _.A. improve its business B. fight against junk food.C.show the importance of health D. rid itself of a poor public image.30. Whats the main disadvantage of the original(原来的;原有的) Happy Meal menu?A. The size of its fries is too big.B. Its food choices are too limited.C. The food on it is too expensive for children.D. The food on it contains too much fat and sugar. 第二节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Enjoy life As a Teen The “best years of your life”?
