B Australia, the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to European nations in the seventeenth century. These nations were less interested in changing it into a colony (殖民地) than in exploiting it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the settlements in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common as well. Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing. Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later. Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some striking (显著的) differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution while Australia won its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike the United States, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the United States. Yet, in spite of these and other main difference, Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.60. In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west firstly for the reason that _. A. the population was increasing rapidly in the east B. the English thought there might be richer land there C. gold was discovered there D. fewer people lived there61. In the early 1920s, _. A. Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep B. there were more sheep in Australia than in the United States C. the population in Australia was greater than that of the United States D. the United States had twice as many sheep as people62. Australia, unlike the United States, _. A. did not discover gold until the late 1840s B. was the last and biggest continent to be discovered C. was not rich in gold in its western part D. won its independence by peaceful means63. In the last paragraph, the underlined sentence means _. A. the United States and Australia do not have any main difference B. the United States and Australia have nothing in common with the rest of the world C. the United States and Australia have much more in common than they have with other countries D. in common with the rest of the world, the United States and Australia have a lot of differences C “Congratulations, Mr. Jones, its a girl.” Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different response from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly. Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is clear that the change from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this resocialization process. Although many books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature referred to the role of a father. It is argued by some writers that the transition (转化) to the fathers role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mothers role. The mothers role seems to require a complete transformation in daily life and highly innovative (革新性的) adaptation, on the other hand, the fathers role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the family.64. According to the author, being a father _. A. brings a feeling of excitement to some men B. makes some men feel proud and others worried. C. has a different meaning for those who have daughters D. means nothing but more responsibilities65. In the third paragraph, the author _. A. criticizes (批评) fathers for not taking enough responsibilities in bringing up their children B. excuses the American writers for ignoring the difficulties of being a father C. supports the idea that the chief (主要的) role of a father is to earn money for the family D. complains about the lack of social program to help husbands get used to the role of a father66. The transition to the mothers role requires that the wife _. A. change her life style in a highly innovative way B. stay at home to take care of the baby C. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation D. help her husband in his resocialization process67. Some writers argue that with respect of (关于) the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, _.A. have an easier job to do B. have to make more difficult adaptationC. have to shoulder more responsibilities D. can usually do a better job Dl Beijinger, 6 years overseas work experience in service industry, translation assignments and private tuition.
