Video Script 1 Medical QueriesBeth Ruyak: True or false? Going out in the cold can make you catch a cold. Well, your grandmother might say yes, but a doctor would say no. Colds are caused by germs, not by the temperature outside. So what other medical queries are floating around? Jennifer Harrison is asking in our FYI.Jennifer Harrison: So, do you have any health or medical questions? It seems we all have some questions that we never get around to asking a doctor, so we are hitting the streets asking you to ask us anything and we will search out the answers. The first set of questions come from the world of working out and sports. It seems when exercise is the name of the game, we have a lot of inquiriessome even from the same family tree.Harrison: Were here with Craig and Kyle, father and son. And you guys must have some health and medical questionseither of you?Craig: Yeahhow to prevent shoulder injuries.Kyle: For me, its just old sports injuriesfor Kyle its brand-new sports injuries.Dr. Max Testa: The best prevention is to respect your anatomy and physiology.Harrison: Do that by building strength in your deltoids, the shoulder muscles, especially if you use shoulders over and over to show a ball or swing a racquet. Stretching before and after activities also prepares and loosens the muscles for use.Dr. Max Testa with UC Davis Medical Center deals with professional and everyday athletes and emphasizes that resistance training with weights is an ideal way to avoid shoulder problems.Harrison: Bruce, what is your number one health ormedical question?Bruce: Well, as an athlete, I want to know how to maximize my time and my athletic performance.Dr. Testa: Training is a wide field. There is a science behind training now, so we can optimize time just by training in the right zones.Harrison: Zones, meaning how hard you are exercising. One way to decipher this is something called your perceived exertion. You rate how hard you are exercising on a scale from 6 to 20. At 6 youre resting and 20 is working very, very hard.To improve your health and fitness, experts recommend exercising at a level between 12 and 14. Another way to monitor your level of exercising is your pulse. When you stop exercising, take it within five seconds and count your pulse for one minute. You should aim to hit your target heart rate. Calculate this by finding your maximum heart rate, which is 220 minus your age, then multiply that number by 70 to 85 percent your exercise range. For example, if youre 40 years old, your maximum heart rate is 220 minus 40, which is 180.180 times.70 is 126 and 180 times.85 is 153, giving you a target heart rate of 126-153 beats per minute.Speaking of heartsthat brings us to our next question.Motorcycle Man: My heart wasnt in good condition concerning my age. Harrison: That one is for your individual doctor. Physicians can put you through a battery of tests, one being a stress test to look at the electrical activity of the heart and other exams to determine how healthy the heart is.Harrison: Our next question comes from the EastEastern philosophy that isJacob: I would like to have western medicine to explain how acupuncture works.Harrison: According to eastern medicine, your health is dependent on your Qi, energy that runs along 14 pathways of the body called meridians If your Qi is out of whack, you get sick. To fix blocked Qi, needles are inserted into the meridians, energy is restored and health is reestablished. Traditional western medicine has been skeptical. Some studies suggest it works because these hair-like pins, when inserted into the skin, release endorphins, the bodys natural painkillers. But a new study is investigating the concept that the twisting of the needle may indeed impact nerve bundles between connective tissues and muscles. But more research is needed in this area.We hope we have answered some common questions and until the next time we hit the street, keep those questions coming.Bruce: Thank youappreciate it!Beth Ruyak: As for the acupuncture question, an interesting note here. In the United States, there are 10,000 licensed acupuncturists. About 3,000 of them are physicians. Video Script 2 Resident Physicians Teach Health in School Beth Ruyak: A new program has hospitals teaming up with elementary schools to teach kids about the basics of anatomy and nutrition. The classes are taught by physicians during their residency training. The kids not only learn to be less afraid of the doctors, but the doctors also get a chance to learn about their patients.Host: Kids usually learn about anatomy from a textbook. But these lucky elementary school students are getting anatomy 101 from a pro.Dr. Roozenboom: Can you show me where the arteries are?Host: Dr. Sara Roozenboom has spent most of her career in a hospital, training to be a doctor in the pediatric residency program at UC Davis Medical Center. But now this is part of her training, too.Dr. Roozenboom: I think it makes it even more real to have a doctor whos specialized in looking at your body and finding out whats wrong with it to come and talk to you about whats going on in your body. It also helps to bring the doctor on a more personal communication level with children.Host: UC Davis Medical Center has teamed up with a number of elementary schools to give their doctors hands-on experience with the very kids that they might be treating one day.Dr. Pan: Our residency program realized that we need to teach our residents more about schools, and school nurses were very interested in having a health curriculum taught to the students at the schools. So we both kind of talked to each other and said, boy, we have an opportunity here to work together.Dr. Roozenboom(to students): Eew, thats pretty cool .Who can tell me what the hearts made of again?Host:Today these students are learning about the heart.Dr. Roozenboom(to students): See up here, at the top ,this is the atrium.Host: Dr. Roozenboom doesnt just talk to the kids about it. She shows them what it actually looks and feels like using a sheeps heart. Its a big hit with the kids. Student: The heart is made of muscle. It pumps blood.School Nurse: You want to listen to my heartan old heart.Host: A stethoscope is also part of the learning process. Students can hear how fast their own heart is beating and compare it to an adult heart. And because these kids are interested, their eyes and ears are open. School Nurse: Everybodys rhythm is going to be different, a little bit. It might be 60 a minute; it might be 72 a minute.Dr. Pan: The residents come to the schools and teach the curriculum, so that certainly benefits the students as well as the residents themselves are taught about the school environment both by the experience of teaching in the classroom and also the partnership with the school nurses. The school nurses show them different things about the school environment. And so that helps the residents gain a greater appreciation about where their patients spend most of their time.Dr. Roozenboom: What are some of the numbers youre getting? How high is it going now?Host: Their relationship also benefits the schools. Residents not only teach anatomy, they also teach the kids about diet, exercise and nutrition. Ehtel Phillips elementary hopes that will increase overall attendance.Pat Culleton: I see at least 20 to 25 children a day in my office with some kinds of semantic complaints or injuriesyestrue. We see a lot of children who come in who didnt eat breakfast and they have stomachaches so we have to reinforce that nutrition is important.Doctor in classroom: And so I put this part against your chest, so I can listen to your heart.Culleton: The whole emphasis is to be in class because thats where the learning takes place.Dr. Pan: Most health habits are bening developed in childhood. So this is a perfect opportunity to try to instill these good health habits in young children.Host: But for the kids? Well, its an experience they wont forget. They get to feel a slimy heart and handle a
