The Wall Street Crash（华尔街的崩溃） The American investor was generally more speculative than his English counterpart, often investing with borrowed money and using maybe only a 10% cash deposit. Practice on the New York Market more higher and higher as the money poured in. Finally, the inevitable happened and, in October 1929 prices started to fall, Panic ensured as speculators hurried to sell they were not only losing their own money but also the 90%they had borrowed. Prices tumbled as selling generated yet more selling. As with the South Seas Bubble in England more than two centuries earlier, many were ruined on 24th October alone 11 people jumped to their death from the buildings surrounding Wall Street. The crash, in fact, had a relatively mild effect on this side of the Atlantic. Price were down ,but only 15% or so, though credit became very tight and dealing in American shares all but stopped. All in all London had not fared too badly. Markets throughout the world were to face far worse in the depression years of the 1930s, and yet still survive. Meet Unexpectedly 邂逅He is waiting at the airline ticket counter when he first notices the young woman. She has glossy black hair pulled tightly into a knot at the back of her head the man imagines it loosened and falling to the small of her back and carries over the shoulder of her leather coat a heavy black purse. She wears black boots of soft leather .He struggles to see her face- she is ahead of him in the line- but is it not until she has bought her ticket and turns to walk away that he realizes her beauty, which is pale and dark-eyed and full-mouthed, and which quickens his heartbeat. She seems aware that he is staring at her and lowers her gaze abruptly.The airline clerk interrupts. The man gives up looking at the woman- he think she may be about twenty-five-and buys a round-trip, coach class ticket to an eastern city.His flight leaves in an hour. To kill time, the man steps into one of the airport cocktail bars and orders a Scotch and water. While he sips it he catches sight of the black haired girl in the leather coat. She is standing nears a Travelers Aid counter, He wants somehow to attract the brunettes attention, to invite her to have a drink with him before her own flight leaves for wherever she is traveling, but even though he believes for a moment she is looking his way he cannot catch her eye from out of the shadows of the bar. At last, he musters a smile. “Busy place,” he says.She looks up at him- Is she blushing?- and an odd grimace crosses her mouth and vanishes. She moves away from him and joins the crowds in the terminal.When next he sees her, she is seated against a front window of the terminal, taxis and private cars moving slowly beyond her in the gathering darkness; she seems interested in a book. A seat beside her is empty, and the man occupies it.“this is the second time that I have seen you” he says.She glances at him with no sort of recognition. “I dont know you,” she says.“Sure you do.”She sighs and puts the book aside. “Is this all you characters think about- picking up girls like we were stray animals? What do you think I am？“Nobody is able to neglect your beauty!”“I beg your pardon?”“For seeming to be attentive to me, to let yourself stand so close to me, to blush prettily when I spoke, I means”“Are you kidding?!” she interrupts.“Excuse me, I just think love is wonderful thing, dont you think so?”She studies him, her face serious, “All right, you know, being beauty, I must be tired of stares from males and now youd better get out of my way!”She turns to walk away, he runs after her.
