Unit 2 Getting AroundPassage A Pre-Reading Task1. What do you know about Shanghai?2. If you travel in Shanghai, how do you prefer to get around the city? How to Get Around ShanghaiAs we all know, Shanghai is the commercial and financial centre of China. It is the largest and most populous city in China, and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. The city is also a tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund, City God Temple, and Oriental Pearl Tower. Today, Shanghai has been described as the “showpiece” of the worlds fastest-growing economy. Getting around Shanghai is quite easy for domestic and foreign visitors. Road signs are in both Chinese and English, as are the signs for the stations of the citys ever-enlarging subway system. At the time of my writing, August 2012, the city is crisscrossed by 11 subway lines; Another 7 lines, moreover, are being constructed and planned. It is worth mentioning that the number of subway lines in Shanghai was nearly doubled by the opening of the Shanghai Expo in May 2010. Shanghais Subway System Non-Chinese speakers should have little trouble navigating the subway in Shanghai. Each station shows maps of the system, with stations listed in both Chinese and English. On board the trains upcoming stops are announced in both languages, though finding the correct exit in some of the larger stations can be a challenge. At the Peoples Square in the heart of the city, it is not unusual to come out at a different exit at each visit. Shanghais Transport Card For those staying a few days or longer in Shanghai, it is worthwhile getting a transport card. It can be bought at subway stations and some convenience stores, and can be used for travel on the subway, most buses and in taxis. The fare is taken away directly from the card as it is passed through the card reader at the entrance to subway stations and by the door on buses.(出处:新编实用英语 学学练练考考 第一册P43(改编) 字数:309 words)New Wordscommercial /km()l/ a. 本国的,国内的ever-enlarging /ev inl:d/ a. 建造,构造,创立mention /men()n/ v. 挑战,质疑unusual /njul/ a. 入口,进入Phrases & Expressionsget around 到处旅行,游历road sign道路标志,路标on board 在(船、火车、公共汽车、飞机、地铁等)上pass through 穿过,通过card reader 读卡机,读卡器Proper NamesThe Bund 上海外滩City God Temple城隍庙The Oriental Pearl Tower 东方明珠塔Shanghai Expo /eksp/ 上海世博会Peoples Square /skwe/ 人民广场Extended VocabularyYu Garden 豫园The Jin Mao Tower /ta / 金茂大厦Shanghai Expo Site上海世博园Expo Village 世博村Expo emblem / emblm / 世博会会徽Expo mascot / mskt / 世博会吉祥物Expo souvenir / ,suvn / 世博会纪念品ExercisesI. Use these budget travel tips to help save money by traveling like a savvy backpacker rather than a vacationing tourist.1. Dont Buy Useless Travel GadgetsSaving money on your trip starts before you hit the road. Dont be tempted by the wide range of gadgets and toys aimed at travelers; most end up not being used or packed at all! Travel-sized toiletries and liquids are overpriced. In such case, fill your own reusable travel bottles instead so that you can refill them later.2. Try Couch SurfingAccommodation can quickly add up to one of the largest expenses for budget travelers. C to the rescue! C is a social site where people offer up guest bedrooms or couches for friendly strangers who are visiting their city. The hosts are often expatriates who are interested in meeting-and helping-travelers. The sites rating system ensures that arrangements remain safe and that poor hosts are avoided by travelers. People can choose hosts based on location, gender, type of room, and even email other travelers who have stayed with the host in the past.3. Keep the Partying in CheckExperienced backpackers will confirm: The number one expense while on the road is often alcohol. While prices for food are cheap, prices for alcohol are disproportional. You will inevitably spend far more time socializing while traveling than you normally do at home, so learn early to keep the party expenses in check!4. Skip the Air ConditioningAircon rooms always cost more than fan rooms in hostels and budget guesthouses, and the temperature difference often makes travelers sick who are slower to acclimate when going outside. Although temperatures outside can be scorching, you will probably only be inside your room to sleep-a fan works just fine.5. Skip the Guided ToursWhile legitimate guides can often enhance a visit to places, you can probably do without hiring a guide for the day just to see local waterfalls and other sites. Backpackers and budget travelers simply make their own way to local attractions for a fraction of the costs, and often get to enjoy places longer and at their own pace rather than being rushed along by an impatient guide.
