Wealsorecognizeourdutytoshareourblessingswiththeleastamongus.Throughouttheholidayseason,schools,churches,synagoguesandothergenerousorganizationsgatherfoodandclothingfortheirneighborsinneed.Manyyoungpeoplegivepartoftheirholidaytovolunteerathomelesheltersorfoodpantries.OnThanksgiving,andoneverydayoftheyear,Americaisamorehopefulnationbecauseofthevolunteerswhoservetheweakandthevulnerable. TheThanksgivingtraditionofpassionandhumilitydatesbacktotheearliestdaysofoursociety.Andthroughtheyears,ourdeepestgratitudehasoftenbeeninspiredbythemostdifficulttimes.Almostfourcenturiesago,thepilgrimssetasidetimetothankGodaftersufferingthroughabitterwinter.GeorgeWashingtonheldThanksgivingduringatryingstayatValleyForge.AndPresidentLincolnrevivedtheThanksgivingtraditioninthemidstofacivilwar. Thepastyearhasbroughtmanychallengestoournation,andAmericanshavemeteveryonewithenergy,optimismandfaith.Afterliftingoureconomyfromarecession,manufacturersandentrepreneursarecreatingjobsagain.Volunteersfromacrothecountrycametogethertohelphurricanevictimsrebuild.AndwhenthechildrenofBeslan,Russiasufferedabrutalterroristattack,theworldsawAmericasgenerousheartinanoutpouringofpassionandrelief. Thegreatestchallengesofourtimehaveetothemenandwomenwhoprotectournation.Werefortunatetohavededicatedfirefightersandpoliceofficerstokeepourstreetssafe.Weregratefulforthehomelandsecurityandintelligencepersonnelwhospendlonghoursonfaithfulwatch.Andwegivethankstothemenandwomenofourmilitarywhoareservingwithcourageandskill,andma-ki-ngourentirenationproud. Likegenerationsbeforethem,todaysarmedforceshaveliberatedcaptivepeoplesandshownpassionforthesufferinganddeliveredhopetotheoppressed.Inthepastyear,theyhavefoughttheterroristsabroadsothatwedonothavetofacethoseenemieshereathome.Theyvecapturedabrutaldictator,aidedlastmonthshistoricelectioninAfghanistan,andhelpsetIraqonthepathtodemocracy. Ourprogreinthewaronterrorhasmadeourcountrysafer,yetithasalsobroughtnewburdenstoourmilitaryfamilies.Manyservicemenandwomenhaveenduredlongdeploymentsandpainfulseparationsfromhome.Familieshavefacedthechallengeofraisingchildrenwhileprayingforalovedonessafereturn.Americaisgratefultoallourmilitaryfamilies,andthefamiliesmourningaterriblelothisThanksgivingcanknowthatAmericawillhonortheirsacrificesforever.
